Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Electric motor mailsail boom

Has anyone just removed the auto furling system and gone back to
normal sails? My thought is that auto-furlers could be removed from
the masts for full batten tracks. This could offer full batten
[high roach] sails with lazy jacks. A little more work but a much
more efficient sail. Comments???? -Bob

I have had a Maramu in Egypt for the last year. Despite tough
about Suez Canal crossing, the Red Sea / Gulf of Suez is a very
place to spend the winter, which in fact is the best time to sail
October to April F3 to 6 in general, May to Sept blows much harder
F6 to
F8 much of the time.

Good marinas are El Gouna, best place to be, with very nice
islands to visit (northern end of Red Sea, Huragarda), also Wadi
about 30 Nm south of Suez is quiet and a safe location.

Maramu passage of the Suez Canal about 400 US one way, but marina
way below Med. once you are here.

Some agents are good, others not so, contact me if you need more

I can help you at least for your first question:
What you describe here is very typical of the carbon brushes being
out. Remove the protection boot, remove all carbon dust in the
collector area, change the carbon brushes (Amel sells them for
reinstall the boot with silicon seal and clamp.
This is a 15 mn job and will solve your problem.

Two times I had problems with electric furling on the mainsail.
electric motor on the boom did not move when I should furl in

worked OK.
When the motor fail like this - does it hve to be serviced or
anybody a good solution to the problem.
My SM # 53 is now on land in North Italy. Do anybody hve a good
suggestion for winter in the sea in Southern Italy, Sicilia or
Hve heared marinas in Tunis pretty fully booked.
