Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Seeking Volvo TMD22 and Brunton Autoprop information and advice

Hi Scott,
I have just serviced my auto prop. I have the TMD 22 Volvo. There has been some discussion about the size of props on the 100 hp and the 78 hp boats. The brunton auto prop H 6 comes in a number of diameters. I believe the common one on the 100 hp is 566mm. This refers to the total swept area. You measure the radius from the centre of the shaft to a blade tip, double it and you have your swept area. Mine is a H6 and using the above measuring is 480mm diameter. I too suddenly came to a lowering of revs. I changed filters, no improvement, removed and cleaned the turbo, no improvement. I dived on the prop and when spinning the blades around could hear a faint rumble (water is a very good carrier of sound) even though they felt smooth to the hand. I removed the prop (underwater) and put the fixed prop on. (dropped the nut but found it again) I stripped the auto prop and found the bearing surface in the thrust bearings pitted, hence the rumble. I ordered the service kit from Bruntons in England (best price) and fitted it, bearings and seals. Have yet to put prop back on so will know then whether it worked.
Regards
Danny

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Seeking Volvo TMD22 and Brunton Autoprop information and advice

Hi. We have a 1997 SM, hull 202, with a Volvo TMD22B and Brunton Autoprop that under load will only reach 2300 RPM at best and suboptimal boat speed. The Volvo readily spins up to higher RPMs in neutral with just a bit of white smoke, "sounds good" and doesn't burn any oil; while under load, we reach 2300 at half throttle and then can go no higher no matter how much more fuel we add. A couple of non-Amel mechanics suggest the Autoprop is the trouble, although it seems to fold fine manually when I dive it, and we see no significant difference between it being just cleaned or not.

Does anyone have pitch and setting recommendations for this prop, which I think is an H6, with the Volvo engine on an SM, or any thoughts and advice? Also, who might we talk to to service the prop? We are currently in St Pete FL, with hopes to solve the power problem and be cruising south in the very near future.

Thank you.
