If I remember correctly he installed it in 2010.

He own SM2K #289 for 12 year, then there was a brief owner for 6 months, then myself since 2012.
In my opinion he is a very knowledgeable sailor, own several Amel (Mango, Santorin, SM2K and currently a 54).
He crossed numerous time the Atlantic with #289, etc.

Personally, I think he did a clever job with the way he attached it through the deck (with minor support there) and to the hull, as this will avoir any pull of the deck.
Of course you have running backstay.

The only mistake I saw is the design of the "sail" as it requires the sheet to be pointed down, which require to add track on the deck.
I think the sail should have been design with a point of leech toward the winches.
Since (in my opinion) anything different than original equipment or design decreases the value of a vessel, I haven't commited yet to add track.

If there was no staysail, I am not sure I would add one.
But after 10 years of owner the vessel, he clearly felt the need for it, and the 54 and 55 have one as well.

Sure it will allow to use a smaller sail in stronger wind, but in the only 4 years I only have been 1.5 days in 37 knots of wind and 2 reef on the genoa was sufficient.
I am not sure (even if properly rigged) if the staysail would allow to sail much closer to the wind. A few times, I sail with the sheet "inside" the shroud, and genoa unfurl to the mast and obtained better results than with the staysail.

The main disadvantage is to tack.
It is NOT possible to have the genoa going through the small space in between the staysail and genoa.
So single handed like myself: I have to got close to the wind, furl in the genoa, then go off the wind, regain some speed, then tack, then unfurl.
If you have 2 crew with you, then you can do it with coordination.
Jibbing is possible, but I still furl it partially (again being single handed and not needing problem).

I don't know how the design on the 54 and 55 is and if they have the same issue to tack.

Hi Eric,  we have the

D5LC 24volt. It's 14 years old and Espar may  now
have

a different one. Wonderful bit of kit. We ran it every
day

in Chile and still use it in the Med.





We also used two domestic fan heaters, 220v , 2kw each.
Run

both those and the Espar and your boat will be dry and
warm

in an instant.



Oh, and don't forget the aircon heaters, though they

aren't hugely effective when it's really cold ,
but

good for ventilating the boat.
