Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fore and aft loading a SM

Anne and John Hollamby <annejohnholl@...>

I suspect that the built in waterline being topsy turvey may be because the line was originally correct when Amel was making a shorter model perhaps the Maramu. Then they lengthened the mould each time and added more weight with the extensions to the aft end but they did not reset the moulded in waterline on the unchanged front section. Either way it is very important to ignore the incorrect line or have it redone from bow to stern. Weighing down the bow is a recipe for disaster. The other critical point is to make sure that the up wire on the thruster is bar taut when the unit is pinned up and that it is raised as soon as the boat has steerage way. Our unit has never let any water in since we  got it in 2001.

Hi Alexandre,
You make a good point. However when we are sailing with the bow regularly plunging into the sea the bow thruster is not only well below the water there is considerable pressure applied to the seals by that plunging especially when going to windward in a significant sea when the water will often be to top the top of the bow. So we need good attention to both the lip seal and the foam seals.

Good morning,

Sorry forgot the link:
http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_repair_issue.html

A word of caution loading too much, or too much on the bow
your vessel.

Last year, when I slowly moved in I tried to balance the
water line loading more toward the bow.

I also like better how she sailed (more weather helm).

BUT, when I serviced the Bow Thruster in the water, I noted
the water was dangerous closed to the top of the cavity
where the bow thruster retract.

As you can see on the 5th picture. (Disregards the comments
on the page, these are old)

An inch more and water would have come into the vessel.

So after that I got ride of a lost of thing and rebalanced
evrything and now have over 3 inches space.

Sincerely, Alexandre

And you know it because the frequency of the need

to get in the water and scrub around the waterline
increases

!

AND every SM that I

see is like ours...high in the bow and low in the

stern...too much weight aft...but why are they all like
that

?...i think its because Amel never changed the waterline

even though in the Maramu development they added a lot
more

weight aft of the centre of buoyancy

EG the drawings shown the rudder

stern gland above the waterline, but when we replaced
our

packing recently it wasn't, the water was flooding

in....it doesn't now thank goodness !
