Hi Bill,

I did give it a lot of heavy “tapping” when it was under pressure and it is still under load tonite. I will have one more go tomorrow and see what happens. I had thoughts about heating it but the part that needs heating is inside the the motor.
Thanks again for your thoughts. It will come out somehow?? If not, I am attending the Sydney boat show on the weekend and I will just purchase a new Amel 64!! I wish?

Kind Regards
Peter

Peter,

One more thing that maybe you did not try...

Do everything you did, and with the pressure on the seized area from the tightened tool, tap with a hammer on the seized area. Don't tap too hard, because I think that is cast iron. If you had an electric chipper to add rapid tapping, it might be better.

Warning - I have not done the above...just an idea...if it has moved some, it will come loose.

Hi Bill,
Well the on going saga continues. I tried the sandpaper between the puller and shaft and also put 2 pipe clamps below the puller to assist in the friction on the shaft. I think it moved 2mm?? Looks like Gradiva is going to see land again.
Thanks again for your advice. I will let one and all know the outcome as well as the images that I have taken to record the process.

Kind Regards
Peter

Peter,

Before that tool was designed, the common practice was to disconnect the suspension cable to the motor. Place a wood block between where the motor and the housing meet, then from outside the boat, raise and plull down hard on the bow thruster. If you do this, be sure that you have sprayed plenty of WD40 or other penetrating oil at the junction of the tube and the motor. It might take raising and pulling 10 to 12 times.

Also, if you have not already done so, you might try adding some grit between that tool and the tube. Maybe sandpaper folded over so that grit is on both sides. Possibly a machine shop can help you with something that will add friction between the tool and the shaft.

Hi,
I have now tried in vain to remove the bow thruster on my Mango. I made a puller as per the Amel tool but the shaft is very tight and the tool only slips on the outer shaft. Is this a common problem and has anyone had to dismantle the motor to get at the top of the spline?

If the process is the same as the SM, here are pictures I took when I did mine, following information written by Gary Silver and notes added by Bill Rouse.
Hope that helps.

Peter, the parts don't all look exactly
the same, but the process is the same as for the Super
Maramu.  The procedures documented on this Yahoo Group
apply to the Mango bow thruster as well.  Make sure you
don't break or loose anything, as Amel won't be any
help with parts for the Mango version.  The seals are
standard seals that can be purchased locally.  I've had
a hard time matching the o-rings and have been using the
same ones for a while.  The nylon screws can be purchased
locally.  The foam rings are a bit more difficult.  If you
can get the SM ones they will work.  Don't tell Amel
you're looking for parts for a Mango, they seemed to
have purged the spares, or just run out.  Last year I had
to fabricate a new fairing, which was challenging but
doable.  Good Luck.
