When replacing any brushes in electrical motors it is very important to confirm that you are actually installing like for like.
On our boats, there is considerable variation in the type and consistency of carbon used in the brushes of each motor.
Installing brushes that are too hard will eventually have a detrimental wear effect on the motor.
Too soft can lead to a build up of carbon dust, which in the case of the anchor windlass for example, can lead to the windlass shorting out and dispensing chain which I found to be very alarming in the middle of the night!
