Hi Pat.
For work on top of the mast that I can’t quite reach from the normal max halyard elevation, I make a simple rope bridle with 2 foot loops to lay over the mast top that allows me to stand enough taller to work on top.
Not elegant or permanent, just a temporary solution for the few times it may be necessary.

Mark, I've to the top many times , but always seemed too low to work on the top. My boson chair may have a higher attachment point , making me lower. I think adding a couple steps may be the solution such as Paul on Nomad just posted . Neither my anchor or tri is working so I need to replace the old unit . Should have done it a few years ago when I had the mast down to paint . Thanks ,Pat

Hi Pat,
I don’t have any steps. I use a regular boson’s chair. The knot fastening the chair to the ballooner halyard is about chest high. If I am cranked up so the knot is within about 3” of the internal halyard block at the very top of the mast, my arms and solders are above the top of the mast. It isn’t easy to do work this way but it is doable. I try to position the chair to the side of the mast. Getting around the furling head and cap shrouds can be a little challenging. Cindy and I use walkie-talkies to communicate. I take an extra line up with me so Cindy can put tools etc. in a bucket for me to hoist up. It never fails, I get up there and need something I didn’t put in the pocket of the boson’s chair. This way we can send stuff up and down.
I recently saw a guy who added looped straps to the seat his boson’s chair allowing him to “stand” on the straps for a more upright position. Very clever.
With best regards,
Mark

Mark, Its always seemed it would be difficult to get high enough to drill and tap the top of the mast. Did you install a set of mast steps to get above the mast, if not how did you position yourself high enough to work . Pat

Alexandre,
If I remember correctly, the base was screwed to the mast top platform with 2 screws. It was also sealed with a lot of silicone. If you pry the base you should see the points of contact. It doesn’t matter if you destroy the old base in the process since you will need to drill new holes. All you really care about it reaching the wiring and cleaning the mast top for the new installation.
I was pretty miffed when my first unit failed. But Defender assured me they sell a lot of these and have very few issues.
With best regards,
Mark

Good morning Mark,
Yes I hope we meet!
I am in Great Exumas until the 26 of November.
Then sailing to Turks & Caicos likely until the end of December.
Then Dominican Republic for 2 or 3 months
Thanks for the information. Was it easy to remove the old base?
I didn’t see screw when I was up there.
http://nikimat.com/mast_tricolor_anchor_light_base.html
Not good it failed so quickly, but good it was replaced…
Thanks again, sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,
I hope you are doing well. I see you
are in the Bahamas. We are heading there in a few days. I
hope we can meet. We will be going at it backwards and
working our way from North to South.
When we purchased Cream Puff, it had
the original Guest tri-color fitting. It failed after 15
years of being in the sun. When I removed it the unit
crumbled in my hands. It was amazing it still lit up. It was
also very corroded inside. We searched all over for a
comparable fitting but I believe Guest is no longer making
lights. We replaced the unit with one I
purchased from Defender: mast-top tri-color w/Anchor light
Series 34 LED model 34706-7 http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C65136%7C2312550%7C2312561 <http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C65136%7C2312550%7C2312561 <http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1%7C65136%7C2312550%7C2312561&id=2113738%3e> &id=2113738>; &id=2113738
This was a recommendation from Bill Rouse. I believe Amel
switch to these units on later models when they installed
the LED. The unit will take 12 or 24 v. I used
the existing wiring and just made the 3 connections. I cut
back the wire to ensure I had a new clean connection. I had
to install a new base for the new fixture. It involved
drilling new holes in the mast top and tapping the holes for
stainless steel screws (I purchased separately). At the top
of the mast, there is a common neg and a pos for the anchor
light and a pos for the tri-color. These wires are connected
to the new base and the light unit plugs into the
base. The unit I purchased failed within a
couple of months. Aqua-signal replaced it and even paid
shipping for the return of the old unit. So far, the
replacement has been trouble free.
Hope this
helps. With best
regards, Mark Super Maramu
