Yes, Bob. I think Amel originally wanted to make it simple and tell us we could use the exact same oil as we do in the engine and Generator. Sort of a simple solution. And it is true, the diesel engine oil will perfectly lubricate the C Drive.

But maybe gear oil will do the same job of lubrication AND help prevent water seepage.

I am happy with this information.

Bill, I have a 55 and the recommendation from the yard as well as written on the c drive oil reservoir is SEA 80-90 although the manual had a different type.


It makes sense for a S drive as its a crown and pinion gear box, same as a car axle differential.

I have confirmed that Amel Caribbean in Martinique now uses  GL5 80w90 Gear Oil when servicing Amel C Drives.

Is anyone else aware of this? It is a very interesting change.

I have not confirmed with La Rochelle.

Possibly Olivier might do this for us.
