Hi Pat,

So what is the bilge ground strap connected to? I suppose the iron keel?  Should we be looking at the continuity between the keel and the zincs?

Alexandre, Sorry I missed the second part of your question. I would check it at the strap in the bilge , that way it also confirms that you have continuity between the strap and the quadrant connection . That's actually what its all about , confirming contact between the ground strap in the bilge and the zincs on your rudder.

The way you describe it sounds very simple… at the next haul it will do that and you mentioned the number should be 900 (?)
Do you have to check several items? quadrant then ground copper strap in the bilge or 1 is enough?

Alexandre, Its pretty simple, take a wire
and clip it onto the quadrant where the ground wires
connect , or to the copper ground strap in the bilge , then
connect the wire to one side of a multi meter , say the
black lead and then place the red lead on the zincs on your
rudder . You of course have to set your meter to the
continuity setting , its simple , have someone that knows
how to use a meter show you or follow instructions provided
with your meter.If you have continuity your meter will beep
and the numbers change. While its vital that you have
continuity , as I have just learned , that does not mean
that you have adequate continuity. While you are in the
water you can have the potential checked which gives you a
better picture of the state of protection. Don't ask me
to explain potential , I only have a foggy idea of what it
means and could not put it into words.

Please forgive my ignorance, but how do you measure the
continuity…


I hate to admit it, I didn’t know about it when I did the
last haul out in March 2015, I then read on the forum and
the owner manual.


And will definitely want to do it next year.


But how do you do it? (pictures rather than words would be
so nice)…





I assume you can only do it on land.

Before my boat went into back into the


water yesterday , I checked for continuity between the


copper strap and the zincs and I did have continuity.
Later


, I had two marine electricians on the boat and they
checked


the potential from the quadrant and found it to be only
560


, they tell me that they would expect to see about 900.

parts


of the boat. We can only speculate that the connection


between the quadrant wire and the zincs have been degraded
.


There may not be enough contact between the zinc bolt
and


the strap inside  the rudder , it would only be the


threaded area of the bolt and the strap , and stainless
is


not the best metal as a conductor . Bottom line is that
I


need more zinc protection/contact. They suggested that
we


install a large zinc on the hull with two bronze bolts (


better conductivity )through the hull , wired directly
to


the strap in the bilge. I am writing this to inform the


group , that just because you have continuity , does
not


mean that you have adequate contact/protection.
