I am going to hijack and rename this thread and ask a question of the group to help me think of what I might have forgotten.

When I was teaching sailing, it was not unusual for students to ask me if I carried a sextant and knew how to use it. My answer was “Yes.” Most would follow up with a question, “But, why?” Which let me explain that any boat (as Pat and several others have painfully found out!) is one lightening bolt away from the 19th century. In a direct lightning hit you pretty much have to assume that every electronic widget on the boat, turned-on or not, plugged-in in or not, will be toast.

If that happens at your home dock, it is an expensive inconvenience. If it happened half way between Panama and the Marquesas many sailors these days would be literally lost. It seems even the ability to keep a DR plot on a chart isn’t considered a core skill anymore. And even people who appreciate its importance don’t practice.

Have you thought about how to handle this? Here are the things I have thought of specifically related to our Amel and would like additional input from others who might have thought about this, or heaven forbid, experienced it.

Sextant and long term navigation tables. Even without a working timepiece I can at least find latitude.

Water: A manual pump to get water out of the tank, and spare jerry cans of water. Enough for crew for two weeks on "starvation" rations.

Enough dry and preserved food that we won’t starve if the coolers stop working.

Steering—Still learning how to keep the Amel on a steady course with just her sails. She’s a bit fussier than my old ketch, but I am getting better at it.

What other systems would we miss enough to think about backups in case of a total electrical system meltdown?

Alexandre, I feel for you,, and even though
I did not have to argue with my insurance co. over coverage
, the process was very time consuming. I have probably
invested 50 or more hours pouring over estimates ,consulting
with the electrician and emailing back and forth between him
and Pantaenius. Not to mention the days to move the boat and
days there to determine damage and how to proceed . I also
lost four month use of my boat, the whole summer. Lets hope
this will be our last claim for the both of us.

I am honestly sick to think about it.


I could go in detail and mention all the work “my”
insurance ask me to do (like proving how much I am spending
on marina since I own the boat, justification of phone
records, etc. ) countless hours and still unsure why as they
never paid for any of that either…


I am only 45 and all my life heard horrible stories about
insurance, I never believed it until now…





Anyway, I am glad they are ethic insurance.

time of your incident. No wonder you are looking for a

insurance carrier. It certainly does not seem fair ,that


when you were at zero fault, that you were not made
whole,


sorry about that. As to listing the equipment replaced ,

type slowly with two fingers and at my age , I cannot


afford to devote the time it would take. My wife knows
how


to copy and post, I will see if that's possible ,


although it may make for a boring read.

Mine was not a lightning strike (I was in my slip at the


marina and someone run into me).








In my case, they did not cover the marina charge as the


expert originally Rousselon said, plus made me waste 3


months to wait for a quote which they thought would be


cheaper (and was not)…








Via DeLassee, they put “vetuste” (antiquated) on


everything from navigation light, bulb, etc. and did not


want to go after the other insurance, as hiring a lawyer
was


not worth it…








So even thought I was at zero fault, only 20% of the
cost


were reimbursed…

















Anyway, very happy for you that Pantenius took good care
of


you and paid 100% it is good to know for every body.

















May be it would be interesting for some of us, to see
the


list of the equipment damaged (including the on eno the
grey


area) as some of us might simply forget about something
in


case of a lightning strike…
