Mark, I had not thought about such a device to track the dinghy if stolen. We already have an InReach  Explorer on board , so family knows where we are and Diane uses the text feature daily to contact the kids , works great everywhere. I will simply hide that in our dinghy , we have a locker where it would be out of sight . It transits position  few minutes , which would make it very easy to find no matter how far away to was taken .

a nice device. But I am not looking for a world wide localisation with additional costs. My application is to leave the dinghy ashore while going out for visiting a new place. I wonder if something is on the market?

Spot Trace uses satellite technology and is a device that can be use to recover a dinghy:

I have heard that one can use the anchor watch in a manner that you get information on your mobile phone when you are out and the boat is slipping. There are a lot of such gps systems for cars, trucks.
I wonder if there is not a system which can be used for the dinghy as well and at least you get information when your dinghy is moving. Who knows if there is something applicable on the market? I would be very interested – in addition to the chain solution.
