Re: Dominican Republic

Hi Duane and Peggy. I can echo Marko CREAMPUFF’S sentiments. I have been to the DR several times. I could hardly wait to leave. Other than Haiti, it is the most unpleasant place in the Caribbean from my experience. Officials are quick to let you know you are at their mercy and that is unsettling. I can only imagine what their legal system and eventual prisons are like. The previous owner of Marks boat took over a failed building project for a resort and regretted it every day there-after.

You won’t like it there.

Duane,

We sailed from T&C to PR without stopping at the DR. The DR government officials are corrupt, the smelly bays are polluted and the islands offer nothing that cannot be found elsewhere in the Carib. Others will most likely disagree but my point is, if you do skip it, don’t feel bad about having to.

With best regards,

Mark

My apologies if this sort of post is too off-topic.

We're preparing to leave the Bahamas for the Dominican Republic.  They have some pretty restrictive allowances for "boat stores" which we exceed by magnitudes (especially the wine and beer!).  The guide books note that they will "inspect" your vessel.  These are the same guide books that advise you to stock up.

Can anyone advise me on what to expect from Customs in the DR?  I'm thinking of just sailing past it to Puerto Rico, but that's a longer sail than I prefer.

Thanks,
Duane
