I have seen the "soot" by my exhaust on my new (Sept.) SM. Neither the generator or the engine have shown any sign of consuming oil, so I presume it is due to incomplete combustion of the fuel, either from running the genset with too small a load, or cruising with the engine at economy RPMs.
