David beat me to it....Nigel Calder's book is the "Bible", it's well written and leads you gently through the technical bits!! Do make sure you get the latest edition - it's got about 40% more content than the earlier one. The "3" in the "3 to 5" rule is the lower multiple ie if you have a single alternator charging a bank of batteries, and the alternator rated maximum output is 100A, then the ideal size of your battery bank is 300 to 500 AmpHrs.
