It allows users to categorize and organize on their own as opposed to forcing a structure on anyone. Looks similar to what we're using now in that you can choose between doing everything with email or going into the site. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!overview --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, eric meury <ericmeury@...> wrote: that doesn't change in a forum. It allows for message to be better organized, but the real problem is that a web forum does not allow for items to be email and SSB email for the cruisers. Not sure there is a good solution but agree the built in document organization structure in yahoo groups is lacking. Just to be clear Dave and I are strickly talking the tech side of the communication platform and not any members or the collective members. --- On Tue, 12/13/11, Richard03801 <richard03801@...> wrote: From: Richard03801 <richard03801@...> Subject: Re: [Amel] Photo uploads...some thoughts - Better orgnization! Realistically speaking, the best way to achieve these goals would be to move from Yahoo Groups to some type of web forum where we could have discussions categorized by a wide range of topics and photos tagged in similar manner. A real forum could supplement or replace this list. I would be hesitant to move away from the Yahoo group completely because of those out cruising who rely on SSB or sat phone based email. My company would be willing to assist with underwriting some of the costs associated with setting up a forum if the consensus of participants supports moving forward with such an idea. One thing I don't have a lot of is time, so someone else would need to do some of the research on forum software. We have server space on which it could be hosted. The problem is that we do not follow a logical or pre-planned method of posting photos and Yahoo does not provide a search of photos. Additionally, the only thing that the owner/moderator can do is delete a photo or an album...he cannot move things around. And, lastly the only thing Yahoo does for us is to sort the album based on Album name...most of you see the problem this presents in naming an album incorrectly or with (") quotation marks or other non-alpha characters. Recently there has been several discussions of mizzen car failure and several of us have posted photos. I know of three different albums that contain photos of mizzen car failure: 1.) Rigging Super Maramu http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/1650688738/pic/li st 2.) OUTHAUL MIZZEN CAR FAILURE http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/183142043/pic/lis t 3.) Kimberlite http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/1943285105/pic/li st I do not offer a solution to this situation, but hope that someone can. The longer this continues the more confusing and worthless this great asset will become.
