Re: Euros keel corrosion - help!
achimschro <Achimschro@...>
Hi Geza,
if the keel is the same as on my Kirk # 81 from 1972 I think it is a minor problem. My advice is to open the crack immediately to learn more about the scope of the problem. Because it is just on one side of the keel it might be that only the coating is cracked. In any case open the joint, let it dry and check all around the keel very carefully. You can test the other areas by using a small hammer and listen to the sound. When you have opened the joint remove more coating than just the visible crack. When you are sure that there is solid coating you can stop. If it is the joint between the hull and the ballast widen up the joint so that you can later fill it with a flexible marine sealant ( SIKA or PANTERA ). Then the problem should be fixed. I am right now in the process of a major overhaul of a Kirk where the coating on the ballast is also cracked but this is due to a lack in maintenance and not to movements of the keel. Good luck and greetings from Hamburg. Regards Joachim P.S. Didn't you remove the ceiling cover some time ago. Any hints to make it a smaller mess ? --- In amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com, Szabó Géza <rotorman@r...> wrote: Dear Euros and other Amel owners,

keel corrosion part 1

Dear Euros and othe Amel owners,
today I removed my Euros 41 from the water and I was shocked. Several corrosion signs can be seen on the bottom on the keel. The corrosion is on the same area where the ballast is. There is also a small crack on top of the ballast. So far I thought my ballast is encapsulated. Do you know - is it encapsulated or external? Any suggestions, how to repair this? I uploaded a picture to my website: www.rotorman.hu/corr.jpg (size 62 kbyte) Help! Geza Szabo (I send this message the 2nd time, because the 1st message did not appear on groups.yahoo.com). Euros keel corrosion - help!
Szabó Géza
Dear Euros and other Amel owners,
today I removed my boat from the water and I was shocked. There is corrosion on the keel. Only on the left side, approx 30 cm long crack can be seen. I figured out that the crack is just where the ballast joins the keel. Water is still slowly coming out from the crack. The whole are, where the ballast hase small corrosion traces. The other side looks perfect. I uploaded a picture to my website: www.rotorman.hu/corr.jpg (size: 62 kbyte) Any suggestions, how to repair this? Help! Geza Szabo

downhaul main boom
Ciao a tutti = Hi all,

I have now a new SM 2000 " EUTIKIA" in Venezia . I find all these informations from Amel Yacht Owners very important to improve me and the boat, even if the boat n.428 is quite perfect thanks to the yard and Amel's people. May I have some foto about the solution for the downhaul on the main boom ? I think I have not well understood the thrick. Thanks a lot, Gianni e Marina EUTIKIA gtesta23@tin.it

My method can be seen in "Photos" under SM319 Bali Hai. The original traveller is used with the addition of some parts sold by Lewmar for, if I remember correctly a size 1 track. The control lines run forward to the cockpit with simple plastic jammers fixed forward and inboard of the handrails. I was more concerned about leaving the cockpit to adjust the downhaul on the main boom. This was easily solved by getting two blocks with quick release clips, one for each side of the boat. A line is run from the becket on each block through the block on the boom, back through the new block on the toerail and back to the aft winch in the cockpit. The line needs to be two metres longer than the original one. With this arrangement it is much easier to shape the main with less traveller adjustment and it also makes it possible to gybe the main under complete control at every stage. Actually I only used one new block as I reversed the original block so that the jammer was out of the way and then only used one of the sheaves. This alteration works like a dream for us. Try it! Dear all,
my partner has just pointed out to me that while it is a small Amel in recent terms it is in fact a large 10m yacht, which it of course is. As my other partner says it is perhaps one of the most comfortable 10m yachts for a long passage. Heaters
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
In defence of Eberspacher ( Espar), I fitted one to a 35 footer in 1983 and know that it was still working 10 years later. One fitted to my new Sharki worked till I sold it 5 years later. The one on my second hand Maramu ( which had spent its first 5 years in Majorca where the humidity in winter months has to be experienced to be believed) worked happily when I bought the boat and for the next 7 years of my ownership. My present one , coming up to 4 years old and used daily now we are in S Chile, has proved itself, though it is much noisier than those on the Sharki and Maramu.
It is important to use the heater from time to time, not something you think of in the Tropics! Also useful to carry a spare gloplug since these can be affected by carbon.Espar does seem to have good international coverage and I believe are extensively used in buses. Its good that its working since the heating elements of my saloon and aft cabin 220v heaters have both just packed up within 5 weeks of each other. An enquiry to M Selo brought the information that when using these as heaters you should always use medium or fast fan. Using low fan means that insufficient air passes over the heating element and it burns out.I am waiting to find out if I can replace the heating elements locally or whether I have to order them from Italy. A domestic 220v fan heater is also a boon. We have a 3 kw one on board, and if you close off the forward cabin and drop the curtain to the aft corridor you are soon back in shorts and T shirt in the saloon.Ian and Judy Jenkins, Pen Azen, SM 302, Chile _________________________________________________________________ Sign-up for a FREE BT Broadband connection today! http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/btbroadband

So have I now modified my AMEL SM 2000 #407. The modification is extremely easy, and so I believe worthwhile. If anyone is interested, I can send e few pictures ( ZIP 800 KB ) to show how it looks like. The boat is now again in the water, after the bad accident with an unmarked underwater foundation. The repairs been done in Lago di Sibari, in a very professional and extremely cost reasonable manner. If interested about the pictures, mail to r.zurkirchen@vtx.ch Rudy und Rita SAMANTHA

Service bulletins
koenvelleman <no_reply@...>
Hi,
I am a bit shocked about the Crusader debacle. As owner of SM #17, I must say that I didn't encounter major problems. SM #17 sailed 1 1/2 times around the world Before deciding to buy a new SM I did a survey of cruising boats in the 50 foot range, and although I hate a few of the Amel features (fake teak etc) none of the boats I visited could convince me. (regardless of price) Ofcourse nothing is perfect and I had a lot of small problems, wich are all corrected and also corrected by Amel in their later boats That's the good thing about Amel. Other yards change their designs every few years and re-invent new problems again and again. Guess Ian Shepard must have been very unlucky, having 2 major failures. Blaming the failures to single-handed sailing is in my opinion not relevant. I don't want to get mixed up with the Crusader debacle, of wich we all know very little details, but lets hope that Amel solve this dispute ASAP, and that they choose for a "commercial" solution rather then go to court. This would prevent big damage to the Amel reputation and to the re-sale value of our boats. But I must support Ian in his proposal of a kind of service bulletins. When telling Amel about some of my problems their reaction has always been "We never had this problem before.." Talking to other owners I discovered that they all had similar problems and that they also got the same answer from Amel. The point is that if I had known about these problems, I could easely corrected them in harbor. Discovering problems in mid ocean or in Bangladesh is something else... I proposed Amel to start a kind of service bulletins some years ago (like in aviation), some just for information and some mandatory (like AD's in aviation). Their response was that al owners would force them for free repairs and that the competition would use it killing Amels reputation. Guess they started a kind of bulletin after the sinking of Ian's boat, but only for very serious cases. But times are changing. Product liability is getting serious also in Europe now. All who have been in manufacturing know that covering up known defects can have very severe results for the company and the directors. Sooner or later a "small" known problem could trigger big problems with personal injury or death. A big lawsuit could follow and this could be the end of the AMEL yard. This would not be good news for us. By publishing "service bulletins" and "mandatory service bulletins" to all owners, Amel would tranfer their responsibility to the owner. By warning us, it would be our responsibility to comply. If Amel would offer suggestions or even repair kits to solve the problems then the reputation of Amel would improve..not killed. I hate to discover problems the expensive or even dangerous way, when several other owners had the same problems. And we are not only talking about major failures but also about the numerous small problems that are unavoidable in such a complex product. If we all push hard enough to convince Amel, it will be good for all of us, including the warf. It would be a pitty that Amel would have to learn the hard way, that product liability is becoming an issue, also in Europe and it would be nice to be warned and to be able to correct faults before they become problems. Your vieuws pls, Koen

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] BATTERY LIFE, SULAJON
Stephan Regulinski
Claude,
We have SM#303 and are on the original batteries. We have cruised full time since taking delivery in July 2000. We have been in marinas a lot (maybe one day in three) and run the genset if the batteries are down 20%. In this sense, we have pampered the batteries. On the other hand, our friends on Revalation (SM #390), went through a set of batteries in 8 months. They wondered whether the charger was misset and was systematically undercharging the batteries.
