Re: Bowthruster oil - how to oil top up? - quick question

It sounds as though you are "on-the-hard" (unless you changed the prop and oil seal underwater), hence I'd recommend you simply drop the unit, turn it over to drain the old oil, refill and reinstall. Since you've just done that a few months ago, I should think you wouldn't have to "fight" any corrosion that would make removal difficult. Plus, since you've had an oil leak it's likely the old oil is contaminated with water and should be drained. If, however, you're set on refilling with it in place, I suppose you could try to do so by removing just one of the bolts holding the support tube and insert a small tube through the bolt hole and introduce the oil that way. I've got an outboard motor lower unit gear oil hand pump with a long tube that could work, although I've not tried it myself. Inexpensive at any Chandlery. You'd probably want to remove a second bolt so you can see when the oil comes up to the top. And, yes, the oil simply goes in adjacent to the drive shaft and fills up the supporting tube. Let us know if this works and if it's easier than just dropping the unit. Craig Briggs, SN#68 "SANGARIS" in Leros, GR

Is this correct? Also can I do this somehow without removing the top motor and dropping the shaft?

Re: [Amel] Wind generator
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi there, We installed a wind generator on top of the mizzen of SM299 and am very happy with it. Ours is a German made Super Wind, expensive but robust, and very quiet. We just never hear it. As to antennas, ours are all on the main mast and I don't think they would successfully cohabit with a wind generator on the mizzen.

Hi Peter, The unit is just a push fit, a tube about 5 inches long, possibly with an O ring ( don't remember). It just prised out with a screwdriver--or maybe screw an eye into the cork part and pull. Ian

I am definitely interested in the outhaul motor and gear box for the main sail. Also I am interested in the starter for the Volvo motor. I have the TMD22B motor but hopefully the starter is an exact fit. Let me know the part number when you can. I have a 6.5 KW Onan generator and if the parts you have will fit I would be interested in them as well. How much are you asking for the above items? Thanks for your quick response. We have ours about 6 feet below the mizzen spreader. Easy to service and it looks like it belongs there as its a good compliment to the radar dome. A little problem with the mizzen ballloner, but very minor. If If I would stick a big pole on the back of my boat to hold a wind generator, my wife would kill me. She won't even let me put on davits.!! Not on her pretty boat !!. John, "Moon Dog" SM 248

Richard Piller <richard03801@...>
We have had a mizzen wind gen for the last 7 years. Not an issue with noise or looks. The bigger issue is your antennas. You might think about putting those on a bar between the two aft stays. Having them in the same area as the gen is most likely to cause reception issues.
Good luck. Richard SM 209 in Annapolis for sale. ________________________________ From: "jlucmertz@..." <jluc.mertz@...> To: amelyachtowners@... Bowthruster oil - how to oil top up? - quick question
Dear friends
I noticed a small leak of gear oil from bowthruster prop today so removed prop and changed the rubber oil seal. Since all other seals were replaced 5 months ago before our recent trip, I decided not to replace those yet, hence did not need to drop the entire unit out. My question is how (& where)to re-fill the bowthruster gear oil quickly without removing entire unit? I have looked at the information on the site but it does not tell one where to pour the new gear oil in. My assumption then is to simply pour 0.3 litres of the correct oil into the top of the shaft. Is this correct? Also can I do this somehow without removing the top motor and dropping the shaft? Kind regards, Colin Streeter colin.d.streeter@... Hi Bill and Judy. Many thanks for the reply. The main problem is trying to remove the unit situated behind the cork without damaging the area. How did you do this?

Hi Peter, when we fitted new sensors we attached wires to the inboard end of the wires to the old sensors before removing them. These in turn became the messenger lines for the wires on the new sensors. I suppose tyhe alternative would be to push a stiff piece of wire inwards and use that to reeve a messanger.

I was in Hyeres last week and heard that although Amel still fit the sonic speed to all their new boats B & G basically dont sell them to anyone else. How long spares will be available is anyones guess but other transducers also work with the same box . Cheers, Ian and Judy, Pen Azen, SM 302, St Raphael

Re: [Amel] Re: Rear Toilet - how to clear blockage in curved pipe that enters rear holding tank
Rink De Haan
Yes, I had the same problem with our holding tank pipes too last year. I managed to free them with a combination of using an acid (guess it was an organic stuff) and a cable they use for pulling wire through pipes. This worked fine so far.

Wind generator
p.aebersold
Hello, I intend to install a Wind Generator on top of the mizzen.
Now, there are two antennas, the longer ist most probably for the fastnet radio (navtex)and measures 150cm. If I install the generator on the mizzen, the pole of the generator has to be about 200cm to avoid the generator touching the antenna. Is this possible or should I rather consider the mounting in the stern by a separate pole? Thank you for all type of comment Paul SM Luna Blu #328
