Dolphin 30 AMP Charger

bozo_cinq <bozocinq@...>

I am going to have to replace my Dolphin 30AMP charger. I also understand that on the AMEL 54 they changed to 40AMP charger in the later production boats. First, any recommendations as to brand/type/AMP size that I should consider looking at to replace my existing Charger?

Thanks, Gary

SM2000 Holding Tank Failure SM414 Built July 2003

Ian Shepherd

I recently suffered a most unpleasant leak from the aft heads holding tank. Investigation showed that Amel connect the holding tank to the down pipe via a COPPER pipe that pushes into the 40mm x 5cm hole in the base of the tank. Sealing appears to have relied on some sort of silicon sealant. The bottom end of the copper tube is attached to the down pipe via a single jubillee clip.

The copper pipe was seriously erroded, wafer thin and full of holes. I have never used acid to clear the up pipe of calcium, but for those that do, beware that unless you leave the dump valve open and flush the tank with fresh water whilst you prime the up line with acid, then you are likely to accelerate a similar failure.

Why Amel chose to do it this way baffles me. Why did they not use a barbed plastic fitting as they do on the top of the dump valve instead of using metal in a corrosive environment? The only good thing about the design is that I was able to easily remove the rotten pipe and replace it with a Teflon one that was machined to incorporate two o-seals. The union is now bone dry.

I have uploaded a photo of the failed pipe and the replacement into the Crusader photo's folder.

I wonder if anyone else has had a similar failure? I guess it is a matter of time before the forward tank suffers the same fate.

SSB Radio antenna help

I don't have an SSB radio on my supermaramu 2000 red line, but I'm planning to install one.
Can someone help me sending some photos of a good (best original) installation of antenna, tuner and connection between tuner and ground plate (I have it, original)
If it's difficult to post in the forum also by email.

It should be.
If you still have belt problems you might check that the pulley alignment
(both on the engine and the alternator) is good. Belts on misaligned pulleys
ten to wear very fast.

Hope this helps,

Dear Jean

Thank you very much for the information. From what I saw, the alternator has
now a double pulley drive.
When I was on the boat, I saw two belts connected to the alternator. Do you
think that it is enough?

This problem is linked to the fact that the original alternator on the
early 54's was too powerful for the single belt driving it and,
therefore, the belt wore down too fast and had to be replaced often.

On later 54's, Amel mounted a double pulley and belt capable of
driving the powerful alternator.

So the solution for you is either to mount the less powerful
alternator, which should be quite sufficient, or to change to a double
pulley drive.

All the best,

Hi all

I will be very soon a proud owner of Amel 54.
I know from the previous owner that he had a problem with the
alternator on the Volvo engine. He had to change the belts very often.
He informed Amel about the problem and they sent him a new alternator
(smaller). The problem is that it is quite difficult to change it.
So they did not change it yet.

I would be very happy if someone could give me a feedback about this
problem. Did someone had also this problem?

Thanks

Re: Alternator of Amel 54 (2006)

gallivantbob <bobh@...>

Lior,
Like you I am a new owner of a 2006 Amel 54, and am learning the systems. I purchased Gallivant in January. I have the double pulleys on the 175 amp alternator. There was 4 extra sets of belts on the boat when I bought it. That made me suspicious. I have put about 60 hours on the engine so far. I have noticed that I have had to tighten the belts a few times. One day motoring a coolant hose that comes from the front of the engine, down the starboard side and around the back of the engine to the water heater, rubbed on the alternator belts. The hose broke and sprayed coolant all over the engine room, and one belt came apart into tiny scraps. I re-routed the hose on the port side of the engine, away from the belts, and put a new set of belts on the alternator. While I still have limited experience, I am sure we want to carry many spare belts. Also, the 175 amp alternator does a great job, I will keep mine and keep changing belts if necessary.

Re: [Amel] ANCHOR CHAIN COUNTER DISPLAY

Kimberly Cerillo <kcvabeach@...>

I hope you get an answer Stefano, we are also having issues. I had the
sensor replaced and the diode (thanks Jluc) but every time I turn on the
display it illuminates then shuts off which we think is a short.

The wiring has been a bear, the wiring schematic shows

Top left of schematic displays three Power leads but only the bottom two are
used (white and brown in that order)

Top right shows three Sensor leads (brown, white and green in that order)

Bottom left three Tiller leads but only bottom two are used (brown, white in
that order)

Bottom right five leads which are not connected

The problem is when we dismantled the display, the bottom left Tiller leads
were wired white/brown instead of the schematic of brown/white.

The schematic does state (though no graphic)

Lighting

Reset Counter

Switch Off

RESET X

Reset 3 seconds

Reset 7 seconds

John,

50W GE #4505 is the bulb to use for main mast deck light...it is a spot type light. 50W GE #4593 for mizzen deck light...it is a fluted, diffused light.

Both are rated at 28vdc.

The last time I bought the 4505, I bought it from www.bulbconnection.com and paid $7.80USD each.

It was time to replace the 3 V belts on the 100hp Yanmar on BeBe, even
though they looked good.

So, I loosened the 24 volt house alternator and removed those 2 belts, then
the 12 volt alternator and removed its belt.

Reversing the process, I tightened the 12 volt alternator and while
tightening the 24 volt alternator, I noticed that the lower mount was
broken. Photo at:

I suspect a poor original weld. I am having it re-welded today. BTW, the is
the 2nd poor weld on a Yanmar part, or at least, it is the 2nd weld on a
Yanmar part that has separated on our engine.

I suggest taking a close look at this piece as it is not obvious when it is
broken/separated. Mine appeared to have been broken for some time.

Bill,

I think a 175a alternator is better suited to a serpentine belt. Economical conversion kits can be found here - http://cruiserowaterandpower.com/Serpentine_Pulley_Kits.html
