You cannot do better than FKS Rigging (Frankies) in Simpsons Lagoon in St Martens. They may be able to repair the original.

I have an Amel Maramu hull#42 (1979) and need to replace the mast step/deck plate as the original is cracked. The mast is marked Isomat but I cannot find an Isomat profile that matches it. Any ideas? having just arrived in Antigua I would also welcome any suggestion as to where we might get the work done in the Caribbean.

Many thanks

Hi Kato has done great work you will not be disappointed. They are about as good as it gets from design build and install. Also think about room on top for solar.

Hi Barry & Robyn and all

Thanks for this tip. You were correct about Dick Smith. These guys used to be excellent in the past but have now been bought out by a large supermarket chain and have become nothing much better than another white goods retailer it seems.

Jaycar were much better and are now similar to what the old Dick Smith's was. We purchased the closest spec switch that Jacar had (just $4.95) and this was our problem all along and the furler worked fine the minute a new switch was installed.

Unfortunately we cannot source the same type of switch as the original in Australia so, with nobody on this site appearing to have information of where to get the original switches direct, we will get a couple through Amel so that we have a spare on board too in case another switch goes later. The Jacar one works fine in the interim however we want our boat to look absolutely original.

Interestingly when I took the old switch apart it had clearly been man handled whilst we had detailers cleaning our boat (unfortunately while we were not present) as the toggle had clearly been snapped through inside the switch.

I am travelling by car through Bundaberg tomorrow en route to Agnes Water. Is Tradewinds III currently down at the Port Marina? Nice to hear that there are some other Super Maramu owners in these parts. The only other one we are aware of out here is "ORIS" a well kept 1994 Super Maramu also kept here at Newport in Brisbane. Would love to catch up with you guys sometime.

Kind regards

Ann-Sofie Svanberg <kanalmamman@...>

We have a GoPro with WiFi and underwater shell that we attach on a long pole that we submerge into the water and can inspect the hull. One can walk around with the camera and one can check the pictures/film on an iPad (or similar).

A GoPro you can use both in and out of the water, and make a lot of fun movies.

We think this gadget is well worth its money, and cheaper than a dedicated underwater camera.

I own a SM #69 with the original Perkins (Volvo) engine. It is equipped with a Max Prop supplied by Amel.
My manual says the pitch should be 18 degrees at a left turn prop. I strongly believe my prop turns right, so it does not make any sense to me.
Does anyone know the correct pitch for this prop? ( my hope lies on you Joel)
Thank you so much already....

Veit Mueller <veitm@...>

Hello Alexandre:

I think one can be noticeably faster with a 15-20 kn South wind...for us, we motored pretty much the whole way with the main out at about 6.5 kn.

Broadband: we're using wifi only.
Marina: they all appear to charge about the same, we like South Bimini (Bimini Sand is telling us they recently dredged and have 8' in the entrance), the Beach Club (you have to tie up across three S fingers of the dock) has also 8' at the lowest point.

Cheers,

So any advice from Key West?

I will stay in a Marina in Bimini, not sure which one yet.
Any recommendation?

I heard it is possible to obtain some sort of broadband from Bahamas telecom (not sure of the name), do you know which company?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre:
Sail at night, you'll have less trade wind.
try not to sail during a North wind, or the day after a
strong N wind. I should take you ~6-8 hrs, watch for traffic
(lots last night when we sailed over) you can anchor off
Bimini (its a little lively).Bimini Sands marina
has (per Harbormaster) 8' water going in. I always go
into tight spots (lots in the Bahamas) with an incoming
tide.Have fun,VeitATMAN

Kent,

I have done several Lauderdale to Key West races which are

run inside the Gulf Stream, so this route is possible and

not especially difficult as the reefs are well marked.

Also, I have sailed several boats, including Amels, from

from the north inside all the way to Ft. Lauderdale or

Miami. There is sufficient room between the stream and
the

beach all the way. Sometimes there is a nice
countercurrent

along the shore. The Hawk Channel runs between the keys
and

the reef. I know the some folks sail this channel, but I

have not, so I would solicit information from others who

have run it as to the advisability of taking my boat there.

In the absence of good local knowledge I would sail
outside

of the reef.

If I were interested is spending some time in the Bahamas,
I

would take your eastern route, but it seems like the long

way around otherwise.

Fair Winds, Bob
