Hi Attilio

I followed your advice and have the Kiss-ssb, too. I planned to connect it to the rudder in addition to the Kiss-ssb but will not do that.

Hi all,

as far as SSB grounding, I used http://www.kiss-ssb.com counterpoise grounding. The prove that it works is that I was able to talk with a guy from Savona (Italy) and a Russian guy while I was on the hard in Messolonghi. And it costs much less than making holes on the hull, that I hate, as all of you Amelians I presume.

My techie put it after the tuner along the ceiling of the stern lazzarette, around the opening: no intrusion, no particular problem, very simple and it works!

SSB grounding on the santorin:

There was a thread about the ssb grounding on the amel, I asked if it is possible to connect the ground oft he tuner to the rudder (because there is no grounding plate on our santorin).  In the meantime I found out how it should be (@Attilio, maybe that is interesting for you because you made the rudder connection):

There should be no direct connection oft he HF ground to the rudder because this would connect the battery MINUS pole tot he rudder. The minus pole of the tranceiver power in is connected tot he coax shield and then to the tuner ground à and then to the rudder and that is against the amel electric concept (and will cause corrosion on the rudder).  If a connection tot he rudder is made it has to be sperated with a capacitor so that only HF will go through but the DC from the battery is blocked. Recommendation fort hat is 10 small ceramic capacitors with 3900pF (2500V) each, solded together in parallel (will give 39nF(2500 V) with little Skin Effect).  This will prevent electrolytic corrosion and will give a solid SSB ground.  Without the capacitor it is dangerous!

Santorin holding tank:

On our santorin there is no holding tank, sailing in turkey we will need one.  Does anyone have experience what ist he best way to install one (maybe including some pictures / installation scheme)?

@Ian – Ocean Hobo:  As far as I remember Ocean Hobo has a holding tank installed. Maybe you can tell me how it works , installation, experience…,

Seeking Volvo TMD22 and Brunton Autoprop information and advice

Scott

Hi. We have a 1997 SM, hull 202, with a Volvo TMD22B and Brunton Autoprop that under load will only reach 2300 RPM at best and suboptimal boat speed. The Volvo readily spins up to higher RPMs in neutral with just a bit of white smoke, "sounds good" and doesn't burn any oil; while under load, we reach 2300 at half throttle and then can go no higher no matter how much more fuel we add. A couple of non-Amel mechanics suggest the Autoprop is the trouble, although it seems to fold fine manually when I dive it, and we see no significant difference between it being just cleaned or not.

Does anyone have pitch and setting recommendations for this prop, which I think is an H6, with the Volvo engine on an SM, or any thoughts and advice? Also, who might we talk to to service the prop? We are currently in St Pete FL, with hopes to solve the power problem and be cruising south in the very near future.

Thank you.
Scott and DIane

Dear Maria,  Thanks for this suggestion. We have decided to take a berth in Corfu this year, to cruise Croatia and the Ionian but we will certainly have a look at Leros for next year. How nice to be with so many Amels ! They have the best people on board !

Dear Ian and Judy,

I would suggest to have a look at the Leros Marina (Evros).

We are spending this winter here and the marina is great, super well protected and it has the label STW (Sail the world www.stw.fr ). There are at least 7 Amels boats this winter at the marina.
The island is green and nice and the people really friendly.
If you need more information do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Hi all,     We were planning to cruise Croatia this summer. We avoid marinas, but weddings and aged parents mean that we have to leave Pen Azen in marinas for regular returns to London ( best from Split).Hav emailed half a dozen Croatian marinas their responses have been that they are full with charter boats and that  we cannot make reservations ahead of time as they cannot guarantee us a slot.
That prompts us to look at Corfu or Levkas as a base for summer cruising and possibly for a winter berth.
If anyone has experience of these two marinas ( or any nearby )  it would be good to hear. Also, if anyone has any suggestions of where else we might try in Croatia--they seem very efficient but we are getting the impression that cruising boats are not their first priority.

Hello,

I hope everybody is having a nice winter.

I have decided to do the deck stripes and there is some information about this job but it's not clear for me the paint I should use...

Have someone used the Awlgrip G6001 ? What is your advice? Or what other paint I could use?

Thank you in advance,

SM 378, Mahili. Hi all, recently had a problem with the up/down motor for the bow thruster. Select down and the thruster continued past its normal down position with the drive over extended and the motor would burn out if left on. The problem was a faulty diode in the control unit (black box attached to up down actuator). There are two diodes each across position relays. I do not understand their purpose but if blown they conduct and bypass the relay causing the problem I was having. I replaced the offending item with a diode from a solar panel and all is good.

Maria,

We had Riza @ Emek Marine, Gocek, Turkey get us the paint to match the original from Amel.

I suggest you get the paint from Riza and do it while he is doing your arch. Also, check with Riza on the striping tool to apply the paint.

Hi,

Below is a tool similar to the one I used. Mine had changeable wheels instead of complete striping heads. I used a one part black marine Polyurethane Paint.

The real issue is to rough up the grooves with something. It was suggested to use an eraser. I did use that. It has lasted about 6 years. This time I will use an rubber abrasive wheel  on a dremel tool  when

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Deck stripes

Maria,

Awlgrip has been used by others there are a few postings about how they custom mixed colors to try to match the original. I believe with all the colors offered by Awlgrip there has to be a color that is close enough. The real key will be to ensure all wax is removed prior to painting.

Bill on BeBe turned me on to a special rolling tool that fits in the groove. ( I could not find Bill’s posting)

I plan to undertake this project a little later this year. If I use Awlgrip, I will add an additive to remove the gloss finish: Awlgrip Additive Flattening Agent G3013. I am planning to us a good two part polyurethane with a dulling agent.

Best regards,

Mark
