Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Outhaul

Krassopoulos Dimitris <dkra@...>

Dear All,

I had a similar problem in Greece. I bought a normal rope and it was
extended by on meter ( 3 feet) after a few days of use. I ordered from Amel
the original rope but it also extended slightly 15 cm after use and I was
able to take the it in in order to tight the rope. The rope has to be very
tight any slack will make the system useless.

Best Regards

John,

If you will look at your outhaul line, you will see it has been melted at
the ends. Kevlar does not melt. I originally thought mine was also Kevlar
and the jacket slipped over the core. I brought a piece to New England ropes
and they said it was closest to their endura braid. I have been using this
for over a season and it works fine.

Fair winds,

Eric

The outhaul line has to be kevlar. It is not readily available in most
places and the prudent yachtie will carry some against the time that it is
needed. Anything less will stretch and slip.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Outhaul

Robin Cooter <robincooter@...>

From experience one of the key factors is how you
attach the line to the car. I secure the outhaul end
(the end which is under tension when the sail is
out)with a knot - fisherman's bend is favourite
because it doesn't slip - and sew or whip the "loose"
end for extra security. I then take the weight on
that end so I have maximum slack to tie the other end.
You can't work a fisherman's bent tight enough so use
a round turn and two half hitches, pulling up as tight
as you can and whipping or sewing the end. I have
been amazed at how much a knot will give when load is
repeatedly applied and released.

Robin.

Yes it is cutter-rigged. Tacking must be a fairly laborious exercise
as there is a baby stay too, so to tack one would have to furl and
unfurl both foresails. The Amel rep claimed this was easy - but I have
my doubts. I would have preferred a self-tacking staysail.

I guess most potential owners of the 54 will not be doing much upwind
sailing though...

Did you also notice that it is now cutter rigged? Now I'm wondering how
much trouble it would be to rig a solent stay on the SM2. Anyone know if
Amel offers a chainplate kit for such, or has anyone added one on their own?

I sailed her in April---WOW !!!

There are down wind poles now set at the base of the mast. (I believe they
are optional) you also get a Gennaker (optional?).

You can get an electric passerelle-but the fold down ladder and platform
seems great for most locations.

Fair winds,

Peter Grimm at SuperSailmakers in Ft. Lauderdale has built many Amel

Hi Mike,
I got two quotes from sailmakers in Annaplois (North,
and Doyle). Both were similar in price -- slightly
over $7k for the three sails.
I also just read your e-mail re splitting the
difference between $390 and $425. It has merit and
I'll get back to you on it asap.
On a related subject, we're leaving tomorrow morning
for Baltimore so will have to communicate on our cell

Thanks,

Randy Kilmon <drifter01us@...>

Hi Mike,
We got all the way home by 6:00 P.M. last night
(Suday), having left Annapolis by 6:45 A.M.
Neither of my computers seems to be working this
morning, so I'm in the public library dealing with 197
e-mails!
I have not yet opened yor message containing the
survey results. However, with respect to these two
questions:
1) "Drifter" is definitely a SM 2000. It is printed in
large letters on the either side of the aft part of
the hull.
I don't know when they eliminated the thru-hull
fittings for the heads.
2) I really think you need completely new sails for
the geneoa, main and mizzen. The old ones are
serviceable but -- as you observed -- they don't look
as good as they should.
Later today, I'll try to get some quotes on a new set.
I did call my friends in Ft. Lauderdale, who I thought
had bought sails from a loft in Hong Kong. However,
they said they had bought only a jenny and that was
through Doyle Sails in Ft. L. They thought the price
was slightly less than $2900. However, that was two
years ago. Anyhow, I want everything to be as
satisfactory as possible and I'm willing to make a
price concession for new sails.
More, as soon as I've read the survey rept.
Greatly enjoyed meeting your and Tom's wife; also,
Ted, who seems like an extremely superior young man.
Best,
Randy

the shift to the 2000 was

the SM and the SM2000?
(Perhaps there is a website that identifies the

Also, the sails show a lot of mildew/mold staining.
Other boats I have
owned, with flaked sails when not it use, have not
had this problem at 10 or
15 years old. It would seem logical that tight
in-mast furling could retain
significantly more moisture than a flaked sail and
support more life forms.
Have others experienced similar problems on
relatively new sails with
in-mast furling? Interestingly the problem is just
as severe with the
genoa, which rolls up no differently than any other
furling jib I have owned
without experiencing the problem.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Amel 54 price?

Hi,

Firstly I guess I'd better give a little intro as I'm new to this list.
I don't own an Amel but am scheming and plotting to change that. I'm a
53yr old retired fairly poor Brit, married to a Californian lady who has
decided she likes sailing. (We bought a house on a canal down in Florida
and a little Hunter 30 to try her out). I have been sailing since teens.

I have been admiring SMs from afar for the last 2 years with a view to
selling up and living aboard for my last few active years. I'm just
about to start looking seriously for a used SM and have of course seen
the 54 which looks rather tasty in the video,

How much is it / will it be?
