The rule for blocking air intakes to shut down a runaway engine, is do not do it, because it is possible that your piston rings are worn enough that the engine will pull air and oil from the crankcase and continue running until it burns itself up. Get familiar with the engine you have. All diesels that I have seen on Amels and other boats have a mechanical shut off. Your generator has the same. Some engine manufacturers paint it yellow or red.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] 30W/40 oil for Dessalator high pressure pump
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
The HP pump on a Dessalator 160 is a CAT pump. I bought oil for a water maker CAT pump at a water maker shop in Turkey. I am sure that you can find a water maker shop/guy in Ft Lauderdale.

30W/40 oil for Dessalator high pressure pump
svperegrinus <no_reply@...>
Spent a couple of hours reading and re-reading the Dessalator manuals provided on the "Accesories" binders (the Amel manual itself makes reference to a smaller 50L unit not installed on this vessel) It clearly says that the Dessalator high pressure pump (the CAT pump) needs "30W/40" oil. It is unclear wether this is regular motor oil or some sort of hydraulic oil. Spent a while on the internet looking for this oil. Was not able to find a "30W/40" oil. According to Wikipedia, "W" oils end at 25 (5W, 10W, etc), and do not reach 30W. Certainly a common oil such as 10W-40 would not be suitable for this? The 10W would be too thin at ambient and/or pump-startup temps. Heavily tempted to simply use straight 30 oil. It is not very clear from the manual what Dessalator model Peregrinus has. We were under the impression it is a 120 l/hr machine but on the manual the models shown skip from 75 l/hr to 140 l/hr and the latter one seems to match the output quantities we've seen. Therefore, it might be a D140 / 2.5kW / 220V. Any advice on oil to be used much appreciated. Laying at anchor in Lake Sylvia / Ft Lauderdale today, waiting for tomorrow's weather window north.

Re: SM Engine Motor Mounts
Hi all,
The lower end of my Cdrive is on it's way to France for examination and refurbishing. I found the angle irons that support the engine are very wobbly and I am going to replace the vibration damping mounts before I put everything back together again. Are these the correct mounts? http://www.vetus.com/engines-and-around-the-engine/flexible-engine-mountings/vetus-hydraulic-engine-mounting.html I repowered with the Yanmar 4JH4 HTE 110HP a few years ago. The current mounts were the old ones that supported the original Volvo TMD 22 78 HP. I guess these mounts will work for both? They say each mount supports 67Kg, so 4 would be 268Kg or 590Lbs. Not sure what my engine weighs, but probably not that much, eh? Thanks, Kent SM243 Kristy

Hi all, The volvo TMD22 Perkins has a mechanical shut off on the side of the injector pump, easily activated by hand. rather that than risk my hand disappearing into the air intake.. cheers Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

I can only help you with the 220. I assume you can plug into a 50amp plug in the USA. If not I can explain how to convert the European plug to a USA 50 amp twistlock.
With respect to 110 volts, most cell phones and computers work n 50/60 cycles 110/220 volts. You might want to add a 3 outlet cigarette lighter style 12 volt outlet to the nav station and hook it into the 12 volt power supplies for the instruments. (radio shack) then you can buy 12 volt chargers for your electronics, very handy to charge a computer at sea.
I would suggest installing an inverter for your 110 volt needs. After you use the boat for a while you will find that you have very little need for 110 volts. For electric tooth brushes etc you can buy a small plug in inverter for $20 on eBay. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite SM 376

Well after a week, 870 NM (Ft Pierce to Annapolis) offshore; Fiasco is finally home. Good shakedown cruise. We had wind from all directions, 3 squalls, and got to try out the new boat in all conditions. Good crew to help out. Donations to sea were kept to a minimum: 1 Horseshoe buoy [squall took it], one pair of glasses, and one knob. Fortunately, the GoPro did not make the list (although it was on the rail until we dove for it).
Naturally, there are always some quirks. 1) Need new battery charger. It took a dump a couple of weeks ago, before I came back to the boat. What are folks using now? 2) Need a new reefer. Bought it that way. Makes noise, but nothing else. 3) Need some spare parts for the ENO stove. right burner does not light. Sometimes the gas just pops the flame out. Hard to keep lit. Rebuild Kit? 4) During the Squall I think I may have stripped the gear in the mizzen mast to furl the sail. Seems to free wheel now. I can still operate it but it does not ratchet as before. 5) Downwind WE figured out how to rig the poles. However I would love see a diagram if I did this right, and just exactly are the steps to setting it up and taking down the poles. Also, I have seen some pictures whereby some folks are sailing with the poles pre-positioned aft for deployment.
Only one breakdown: the Prima M-50 raw water drive bit the bullet, 50 miles offshore, 65NM SE of Oregon inlet. Sailed her to Norfolk and got towed in the last 10 miles (no wind, no batteries, no engine, and damn near ran out of coffee). Got that fixed and left the next day for the final push home.
The boat is generally in excellent shape and original equipment.
Lastly, she is still set for 220V circuits. I need to figure out how add 110V without alot of fuss or replacing the old.
All thoughts considered and appreciated. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone for the raft up in July.

The translation is nonsense but the link takes you to a host of zipped .kap files of Europe. http://www.plaisance-pratique.com/-cartes-google-earth-?lang=fr If you look down the opage then there are links to all sorts of programmes. Perhaps there is more info there for you particularly if you speak French. If you suceed please let us all know! Regards Graham

A couple of years ago, I took a basic diesel class.

That question came and the answer was prety easy. You could shut down the fuel valva, but really the easiest is to block (with your hand or piece of cloth) the air intake. 2 months ago, some kid on Spring Break came and had the same problem, so I show them. Then came the question, how do restart the engine. On boats, started are "hot", so always connected to the batteries. So you can just connect the 2 wires and it will start the engine. Just make sure you are not touching any moving parts. Personally I use 2 wire and a little press switch. On some engine, starting without the key, might not allow the alternator to charge. After showing the kids on spring break that, I was their hero for the next few days! Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Diode in Starter shutoff circuit - Super Maramu
svperegrinus <no_reply@...>
Hello,
Related question: if our diesel engine ever were to fail to stop on activation of the red rubber "STOP" button, what would the shutoff procedure be? I realize the Yanmar engine has different circuitry from the Perkins, but an analogous failure could take place. Regards,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] open CPN
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Thanks Graham, this looks promising. The Fiji Google charts I have are accessed from the chart bars at the bottom of the screen. once accessed they are not an overlay, rather they stand alone giving a birds eye view photographic image onto which the boats position is shown via a GPS for the lap top. as you may imagine this is vey useful. I spoke to one user who said in corall areas he picked sand spots to drop his anchor on. Thanks for the link Danny SM299 Ocean Pearl

Hi Danny, This may be whaty you are looking for it allows overlaying of Google images on OpenCPN. I have yet to try but it was demonstrated to me by a Frenchman last year and it looked really useful. Instructions for use. http://yachtzenagain.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/simple-guide-to-installing-and-using.html Download link. GE2KAP.V11.0.0.0 -
New March. 19, 2014 Creates charts from GE and chart images. Can
overlay opencpn chart and chart images. Fixes multi polygon problem. Regards Graham Sharki 181 Zephyr

They included the Google feature but just for the Fiji area. It gives photographic images showing reefs etc. Combined with a gps aerial it is the ultimate for navigating around coral reefs and difficult entrances. Problem being we have lost touch with them and would like to download the Google feature for other areas. Can anyone advise how this can be accessed. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Fuel Dip Stick
sailormon <kimberlite@...>
You must purchase a cement made especially for Plexiglas. As I previously stated I used this made 2 splints out of Plexiglas cemented and clamped it to the stick and it is stronger than new and has lasted 8 years so far. You will know if the cement is correct if it makes the Plexiglas soft before it dries..
I have a bypass valve that allows the incoming fuel to go through a pump and a huge racor filter (thank you Pen Azen) and then into my main tank. I left the stick in the valve and closed it to go on bypass. That is how my stick was broken. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite SM 376
