Main outhaul line

We had problems with the main outhaul line slipping - it was a polyester line.

We replaced it with 10mm spectra and had the same problems.

Before the 2400 mile trip to French Polynesia on riggers advice, we replaced it with 12mm Vectran and it has never slipped, not even in 50+ knots with 3.5 reefs.

For me this is the solution.

Maybe this can assist others with the same problem that we had.

Very interesting, Eric.  I read that, too, and assumed that they must be additive...ie 4 mounts would handle 4 x 25-35HP = 100-140HP.  I just talked to the Vetus people in Hanover Maryland, and he said "No, they are not additive, they are designed for 25-35 HP engines.

 

I don't know if the stresses are different with these vibration mounts underneath the angle irons rather than directly under the engine, but now I'm not sure what to use.  That's a large difference between the HP of our engines and what these mounts are designed to handle.

 

I have sent Maud an email to see what Amel has to say about this...Joel, any thoughts?

We had the problem of the main outhaul slipping.

We replaced the line with prestretched 10mm Spectra - same problem.

On riggers advice, we replaced it again with 12mm Vectran.

In nearly 2400 miles including a 3 day gale and 24hrs of 50+ knots, NZ to FP, the outhaul has not slipped once.

I think we've solved it !

I thought I had this problem solved.....

New Sherwood pump with one piece bronze casting

Global run-dry impeller...

But no.

The global impeller has started to shred itself and we had code 7 after 173 hours.

Admittedly that's nearly twice what we were getting from the Onan pump and impeller, but its still not very good !

I recently had the same problem on my 54. I found a faulty mini relay in the control box, which you referred to. My problem was intermittent, so caused some frustration to finally sort it out. There are 4 mini relays in the control box which is mounted on the wall just above the thruster motor. There is a good wiring diagram in the Amel manual that details the circuitry. In a lurch you can find a similar 24v relay at a local HVAC company which will work fine, but they are generally larger and don't fit in the original space very well. A good replacement for the originals can be found at delcity.net, part #73982, $5.51 each. Hi Bill,

 

I did not actually take the water pump apart, as it seemed to be working fine. I did take the entire manifold apart, and replaced the one way valve. The only thing I did not take off the manifold was the accumulator tank. When I re-installed everything, I had a a substantial leak from where the accumulator screws into the manifold. I took the accumulator tank off, and found about 1/3 of the threaded nipple on the tank was corroded away, and it would not be possible to make a watertight fitting. I the screwed a house barb into the manifold, attached a length of water hose, attached the other end to the threaded nipple on the tank, hose clamped it all, and secured the tank near the pump. How do you spell jury rig?  Bottom line is I have no leaks, it is working fine, but I need to find a new accumulator tank when we get back.

Hi This is what I found about this mount

 

This hydro-damper is a combination of a conventional rubber-metal damper and a hydraulic shock absorber. Especially for engines with 1, 2 or 3 cylinders, producing many horizontal and vertical movements, the VETUS hydro-damper is an absolute sensation: the reduction of vibration and noise is truly staggering. 

The maximum static load per support is 60 kg and the maximum thrust per support is 50 kg. In other words: dependent on gearbox ratio, number of revolutions, propeller diameter etc., these mountings are suitable for engines of up to 18 - 26 kW (25 - 35 HP).

We postponed our departure by one day to get the oil and missed half our sailing window!  For anyone else who may have a watermaker with a CAT high pressure pump, what you need is:

 

CAT Pumps Crankcase Oil ISO 68, petroleum based, hydraulic oil.

21 oz. (0.62 liter) $12.95 at Watermakers Inc. of Ft. Lauderdale

Funnily enough, the Amel manual on board wants 0.75 liter oil changes on this pump!

 

Or, per e-mail received from the CAT factory yesterday:

  "We do have our own Cat oil that can be found at Northern Tool and Home Depot.

But if not available to you.

It is a non detergent 30W Hydraulic oil, or a ISO 68"

 

And then we desalinated over 300 liters today.  This thing is fast.

bow thruster on 54 wont go down

I am encountering an inability for my bow thruster to go down. When I turn the switch on, and flick the toggle to send the thruster down, it buzzes and  the light goes on as if the thruster is already in the down position. There are switches that are engaged when the unit is either up, or down. These appear to be working properly. The switches lead to a box which contains what look to be solid state relay switches. I am leaning towards the opinion that one is defective.

Have any of you folks encountered a similar problem?

I'm stuck in Philadelphia until I can resolve this,

Well.....lots of discussion on this I see.....


We have been off air for the last 3 weeks....14 days sail from Auckland to Raivavae (one gale for 3 days -v but overall avg 170 miles / day) and then 3 days to Papeete.

Currently in Taina Marina.


OK, our smart reg and alt mod is working well.

One issue...the Leece Neville alternator is not a hot-rated or KKK type alternator, so it can't put out the 175 A for very long without burning up.

Our batteries were down somewhat when we started the motor....LN putting out max current 175A...started to smell hot...what to do ?...started the genset and put the 100A charger on to take some of the load away from the LN, and watched the Xantrex monitor until the current dropped to about 130A...then turned the genset off....and continued with the LN.


So that's a trap to be aware of if you have AGM batteries.

AGM batteries have a very high charge acceptance rate compared to flooded lead acid batts, so if they're down they will take the max current you can deliver, and that;s a problem for non hot rated  alts as the smart reg increase the field to get max output and the current that flows is dependant on the battery bank acceptance.


Regarding the discussion about the standard reg in the LN alt....its designed to charge start batteries with thin plates...like your car battery, they don't mind being at 28.8V for hours on end.

Deep cycle batteries in your house bank are a different beast altogether.

ALL deep cycle battery manfrs recommend the 3 stage charging system, bulk, absorption, float.

In a deep cycle application, the issue with the standard automotive reg is that it ramps up to 28.8V and stays there...whatever current flows at that voltage flows (limited by the alt capacity) and the voltage stays at 28.8V

Hello ,

Thats certainly true you clean the ceiling and the foam on the back off the vinyl and you reglue it.Its a lot off work but the result is very satisfying.
I saw a quote off amel with new material (for the previous owners in 2003) it was about 20000 euros...

Aras,

 

Regarding the 110VAC system, the previous owner of our Amel install an inverter.  For 110-Volt 60 cycle power, there is a Xantrex 1000 watt. From this unit, he connected and placed a series of 110 outlets throughout the vessel (the 220v remains unchanged). The Zantrex unit is mounted under the nav station where all the electronics power transformers are located. Cabling to the battery runs through a conduit at the base of the open hanging locker and into the battery compartment. The unit is operated by the remote panel option.

 

We have found this system meets all of our 110 needs. It has ample capability.

Well after a week, 870 NM (Ft Pierce to Annapolis) offshore; Fiasco is finally home. Good shakedown cruise. We had wind from all directions, 3 squalls, and got to try out the new boat in all conditions. Good crew to help out. Donations to sea were kept to a minimum: 1 Horseshoe buoy [squall took it], one pair of glasses, and one knob. Fortunately,  the GoPro did not make the list (although it was on the rail until we dove for it).

 

Naturally, there are always some quirks.

1) Need new battery charger. It took a dump a couple of weeks ago, before I came back to the boat.

     What are folks using now? 

2) Need a new reefer. Bought it that way. Makes noise, but nothing else.

3) Need some spare parts for the ENO stove. right burner does not light. Sometimes the gas just pops the flame out. Hard to keep lit.

      Rebuild Kit?

4) During the Squall I think I may have stripped the gear in the mizzen mast to furl the sail. Seems to free wheel now. I can still operate it but it does not ratchet as before.

5) Downwind WE figured out how to rig the poles. However I would love see a diagram if I did this right, and just exactly are the steps to setting it up and taking down the poles.  Also, I have seen some pictures whereby some folks are sailing with the poles pre-positioned aft for deployment.

 

Only one breakdown: the Prima M-50 raw water drive bit the bullet, 50 miles offshore, 65NM SE of Oregon inlet. Sailed her to Norfolk and got towed in the last 10 miles (no wind, no batteries, no engine, and damn near ran out of coffee).  Got that fixed and left the next day for the final push home.

 

The boat is generally in excellent shape and original equipment. 

 

Lastly, she is still set for 220V circuits. I need to figure out how add 110V without alot of fuss or replacing the old.

 

All thoughts considered and appreciated. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone for the raft up in July.

you should come to the Rendezvous  in St Michaels in the weekend of July 15.

As rar as battery charges.  The previous owner of our Santorin added a spererate 110 system with a galvanic isolator.    If you are going to be in the States for a while that might be the thing to do.

We have this battery charger.   Personally i have always liked havign the charger and inverter be their own machine rather than integrated.

This has been on the boat for maybe 5 years without problems.  We have two spares.  For your sharki won't need anything larger.

Hi all,
about 40 years ago I had a diesel tractor with an oil bath air filter, excellent for the high dust situation the tractor worked in. However having done its job of removing dust and sediment very well it needed to be thoroughly cleaned. Being soaked in engine oil that was not an easy process. I washed the gauze in petrol, shook and tapped the unit to remove the petrol, left it to dry and then refitted it and started the engine. Oh boy, there were some petrol fumes left and that engine screamed at impossible revs and nothing on earth would stop it until the petrol fumes had gone. I pulled the stop cable, I turned off the fuel, and then retreated to a safe distance and watched until it stopped. Remarkably the engine seemed to have suffered no damage. It would have been insane to have blocked the air intake with anything. If a body part had gone anywhere near it it would have gone through the engine. That was a runaway situation, and as Bill said a diesel at revs will cheerfully run on any oil product. I was circumspect in my first comment as I assumed the reference was to an engine at idle where the electric stop failed.

The rule for blocking air intakes to shut down a runaway engine, is do not do it, because it is possible that your piston rings are worn enough that the engine will pull air and oil from the crankcase and continue running until it burns itself up.

Get familiar with the engine you have. All diesels that I have seen on Amels and other boats have a mechanical shut off. Your generator has the same. Some engine manufacturers paint it yellow or red.

You could shut down the fuel valva, but really the easiest is to block (with your hand or piece of cloth) the air intake.

2 months ago, some kid on Spring Break came and had the same problem, so I show them.

Then came the question, how do restart the engine.
On boats, started are "hot", so always connected to the batteries.
So you can just connect the 2 wires and it will start the engine.
Just make sure you are not touching any moving parts.
Personally I use 2 wire and a little press switch.
On some engine, starting without the key, might not allow the alternator to charge.

After showing the kids on spring break that, I was their hero for the next few days!
