Dear Pat,
I went through a long process spanning a year before I sorted this out, with several very informative calls to the engineer at Volspec in the UK (Cheapest Volvo parts I have found). Firstly the key mechanism was suspect. However, if you remove the black plastic cover on the forward side of the engine where you will find the start and stop solenoids (little grey boxes with push to reset buttons sticking out on the port side) and turn the key to off with engine not running....and you get a clicking sound coming from one of the solenoids...it's not the key. Next swap the two solenoids around....one is for start and the other for stop. If when you do this and the engine no longer starts you have found the problem. Next I was told to run a +ve connection from the alternator to the stop solenoid on the HP fuel pump whilst the engine was running and if it didn't stop then the fuel shut off solenoid was at fault.....of course that didn't work so I replaced the fuel shut off solenoid, and guess what problem still not fixed! At this point I gave up. The fresh water pump was leaking at this point which was beyond my confidence to replace due to timing belt replacement at same time so finally the professionals were called. Mechanic found that the 55 amp grounding fuse had blown, and as I a had replacement in my box all was sorted! Ever wished you'd called in the professionals sooner?! Finally I answer your question... the 55 A fuse will be underneath the black plastic box on the front side of the engine. It doesn't look like a fuse at all. It is a solid bit of white plastic with bolt on terminals at either end. The Volvo book says you should never go to sea without this spare part....which I carefully obeyed.....just didn't know when to change it!! I suspect your stopping problem may be more related to my recent start problem .. the solenoids in that black plastic box... Hope this is of assistance Good luck, Graham SM 140 Sula Hong Hong

Thanks Bill I think that is probably what is causing the problem. For some reason Volvo call these solenoids fuses which is a bit odd. Anyway I have two arriving in Hong Kong tomorrow from the uk so I will replace both stop and start solenoids on spec and see what happens.

Graham, I am sure you have thought about this, but have you checked or replaced the negative start solenoid? I believe it is normally open and closes while starting. Solenoids can be intermittently cause headaches.

Volvo TMD22a Intermittent electrical failure causing no start.

For some time I could not get my Volvo TMD22A to stop using the key. Not a problem as there is a mechanical stop. An electrician finally traced the problem to the 55 amp grounding fuse which had blown. Fuse replaced problem solved.? Not quite... I now have a much more serious issue where occasionally when one turns the start key there is no power at the start control panel and obviously the engine does not start. So far, this only seems to happen when the engine is hot after a long run. Leave it for half an hour to cool and power to the starter panel returns. I am about to replace both the start and stop resettable fuse relays in the black plastic electrical box on the front of the engine to see if that helps. Has anyone else experienced this problem? "Moon Dog" was a fantastic boat for us, providing us many, many miles of great cruising. It was with tremendous reluctance that we decided to part with her, but she is just not the right boat for what we will be doing in the future. Still named "Moon Dog," she is now owned by Robert (Bob) and Marybeth Gray and now lies at the Erie Yacht Club in Erie, PA.

Alexandre We had to replace our 50 Amp charger and did it with a Dolphin. The problem with the new one was it was the same size as the 100Amp Dolphin and we had to mount it sideways. The job was easily done and the wires came out the side toward the bow. The new charger has similar settings to the 100Amp so you can adjust the charge according to the type of battery bank you have. Finally had the time to look at the battery charger. I tested the Dirupter breakers it is ok. I checked all the fuse, swap them and they are ok. I have the following lights: Green to show it is ON (which by the way very slighty pulse) so could that be "Fuse Def" is RED The owner manual says: if the ON/OFF light blink (which doesn't completely in my case) the causes are: Electrical Connection out not good.
