Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hit by another boat...

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Dear John,

Thanks for your email and remaining active on the forum! I really appreciate the time you took to reply.
I also think it needs to be replaced.
The owner also said he would pay for it directly.
Will keep in mind going a size larger if metric not available in Nassau.

Talked to my insurance (DeLassee) here is the answer:
they first need information on the 3rd party.
Then an estimate from a reputable repair shop.
then they will decide whether or not to send an expert.
Then, should the 3rd party decide to pay directly for the damages instead of using their insurance, the claim will be closed.

I ask Amel for a reputable repair shop in nassau, no reply yet.

Thanks again for your help!!!
Sincerely, Alexandre

Richard, That's  a very generous offer to pick up people at the airport and it does look like a good forecast. We have had about 5 or 6 beautiful weekends in a row now. This past weekend was fantastic low 80's and very low humidity and a steady 10 to 15 Kts. every day. It looks like we will have about 12 boats and 30 people attending the Rendezvous in St. Michaels. We will see you there.  Pat & Diane SM Shenanigans

Engine Mounts for SM with Yanmar 110...new info from Amel

karkauai

I just heard back from Amel about the engine mounts for my SM with Yanmar 4JH4HTE 110HP.  They say that the Vetus Mitseun  hydro damper mounts (these were the ones originally on my boat for the 78HP Volvo) are not appropriate for my engine.  They have quoted 168 Euros each without taxes or shipping, but didn't tell me what mounts they recommend.  I've asked which mounts to use, but it will probably be another few weeks before I hear back from them again.  I thought I should post this because others are asking which mounts to use and the Vetus Mitseuns are the only ones that have been discussed.

I'll report back as soon as I learn which ones are recommended.

Diesel tank leaking

svsunnyside

Hello everybody,
The tank of my Maramu is leaking from a long time.
Years ago I was able to smell ,only when in front of the
tank, without seeing any leakage.
Then smell increased and investigating carefully, with a dentist
mirror, I found a little leakage due to
an invisible crack beside a welding (arrow-side
corner-flange type) of the lateral panel .
To repair it I reduced the diesel tank level
and after a repeated and careful
solvent cleaning of the contaminated area, I applied
several local coats of epoxy. This stopped the leak for about five
years but the lost of flexibility of the resin together
with the fatigue stress of the foil rendered the work in vein.
Now on both lateral panels , under the area that was covered
with rubber foam, I can appreciate also some
leakage from several corrosion pin-holes.
Of coarse without the removal of the tank I cannot check
neither the bottom nor the back side so I cannot
say how their conditions are. The front panel, exposed to air, till now, is
very sound.

I suppose that several boat could have had and solved the
same problem so any suggestion will be appreciate.
Best regards

Yes Kent, East current and East wind made all 3 boats going sideways...
I actually already moved slip...

It is too windy to try the furler now, but will try later.
I entied the moteur from the bow puplit and it seems untorqued, the support could be slightly twisted/torwued.
I would hate an oversee of my side ending up costing me lots of trouble and money...

Dear Joel,

I just emailed my insurance DeLassee (in France), so should have a reply tomorrow morning if not will call them.
I totally agree on the "knowledgeable" Amel marine surveyor, as I wrote, would hate to miss something...
Thanks for Paul Anstey information.
No problem about being cynical, I don't want to be sorry on the long run.

Thanks again both of you.

Call your insurance company and have the
information on his (the fellow who smacked you)insurance
ready to give them.
Get the damage inspected and
described by a AMEL knowledgeable marine surveyor.
Knowledgeable is the key word here. If the surveyor is not
extremely familiar with AMEL boats, he will miss the
important details. The closest one to you is Paul Anstey 954
270 1940 panstey@mindspring.com
. Paul has surveyed more Amel boats in North America than
everyone else combined. He also was a fiberglass boat
builder and knows what to look for. A survey is
essential to have the platform to enable proper repairs to
be done and a reference to depend on if things don't go
according to plans and promises.I have been
involved in many of these circumstances with my clients and
I can tell you that I'm sorry for you and GET EVERY
PROMISE/ PROPOSAL IN WRITING. Sorry to be so
cynical but experience has been a cruel
teacher.Paul is not my brother in law and I make
nothing for the referral other than the knowledge you will
be well taken care of.
Good luck. Be thorough.  Assume
nothing.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hit by another boat...

Alexandre,
Sounds like its time to find another marina...or at least another berth.  Are you in a place where winds and or current push the other boats into you?

Have you tried to run the furler?  It looks like it was just torqued to port where it's attached to the pulpit.  Is the support below bent?  I doubt that would damage the furler.  I'd try furling with a line first and if that works without a problem, would try it with the motor.  I'm guessing its fine.

Big PITA, eh?  Bad luck, buddy.  Can it be repaired where you are now?

Dear Amel Owners,

This morning 9.30 was hit by another boat:
Felt like a pretty violent impact.
Bow Pulpit bent
Port navigation light (possibly electric wire cut in the stanchion or just broken bulb)
My main concern is possible damages to the connection of the forestay and electric unfurling/furling motor (which was bent 40 degree).

I posted some pictures on:
http://nikimat.com/accident.html

Owner was very sorry and came back to apologize, very nice person.

First time for me to have a boating accident.
Have no idea how to handle this, what to look for.
Would hate to miss a damage then later have problems.
So any advice is welcome!

This is actually the 3rd time in 5 week that a boat hit me at this marina.

On the bright side, yesterday installed new Dolphin 40 Amp Battery Charger and new Engine room Blower, both work perfectly!

Thanks in advance for your help...

Sincerely Alexandre

Call your insurance company and have the information on his (the fellow who smacked you)insurance ready to give them.

Get the damage inspected and described by a AMEL knowledgeable marine surveyor. Knowledgeable is the key word here. If the surveyor is not extremely familiar with AMEL boats, he will miss the important details. The closest one to you is Paul Anstey 954 270 1940 panstey@... . Paul has surveyed more Amel boats in North America than everyone else combined. He also was a fiberglass boat builder and knows what to look for.
A survey is essential to have the platform to enable proper repairs to be done and a reference to depend on if things don't go according to plans and promises.
I have been involved in many of these circumstances with my clients and I can tell you that I'm sorry for you and GET EVERY PROMISE/ PROPOSAL IN WRITING.
Sorry to be so cynical but experience has been a cruel teacher.
Paul is not my brother in law and I make nothing for the referral other than the knowledge you will be well taken care of.

Good luck. Be thorough.  Assume nothing.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Borel exhaust temp monitors.

Hi
VETUS has a device to control the haust temperature : http://www.vetus.com/exhaust-systems/exhaust-instruments.html
I project to use it in ORION, my AMEL 54, the sensor beeing special to VETUS waterlock. I think that beeing directly in the water flow it is a good solution.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow thruster Linear Actuator

I think it is the motor as I have disconnected the motor from the control unit – I ran 24 volts directly to it via a 10amp circuit breaker. On trying this way it makes a little noise and movement almost immediately followed by the circuit breaker blowing.

Also immediately after this first occurred the motor was very hot and the cabin smelt of electrical burning.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi please disregard the previous email I hit the send button before I read the email.

Ok regarding your bow thruster did the motor that drives it up-and-down burnout or perhaps one of the limit switches that control the motion or the switch at the joy stick.

Hi regarding your bathroom when you say the linear actuator burned out are you referring to the motor that drives the unit up-and-down or some other function
