Hi Kent,

I tried to open your first link and it didn’t open.

Could you see if it correct?

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Genoa Furler Identification

Hi all,
I've taken my genoa furler off and dismantled it for powder coat painting.  I need a new knob that is used to pull and secure the pin for manual furling.  I've written Amel and sent them a copy of the drawing posted on this site (  https://xa.yimg.com/df/amelyachtowners/genoa+furler+Diagram.pdf?token=Xfg9DFAIFXcW2Z28WYRsU5slmCEPUdBEwKADiSONDhEcCViUk66UolSkDU9f6-lelhJV0A9DP0mXXpohh9EHV6WUykQlimW18WUWSnaj1rSpT-z4gWOaSgx530N9FxIniZdkFb4MGyoRK9tRe4FA-2tR87IdRm4GNkIsUDxMt-NcU3anlsB7VeTg4_A&type=download It's #17 on the drawing), but they say that's not a good enough identification.  There aren't any model numbers on the posted diagrams, but it doesn't look like the whole page was posted???  I've sent them a pic of a similar furler that was posted on this site https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/amelyachtowners/photos/photostream/lightbox/311719232?orderBy=mtime&sortOrder=desc&photoFilter=ALL#zax/311719232 but they say they can't open it.  ??????  They want a model number or some other identification, but I don't remember seeing anything on the furleras I was dismantling it.  Does anyone know the model of their genoa furler from a boat built near my 1999 SM#243?  Could someone send me a couple of pics of their furler if they don't know the model number?

Pretty frustrating.

Thanks,
Kent

I saw 2 Super Maramus in Vuda Pt with staysails.

RevedeLune IV has two short tracks on the deck very close to the cabin top

Pacific Cool has two short tracks on the cabin top.

We have a staysail also and I have mounted snatchblocks on shackles at the main chain plates.

The sheets are outside the forward shroud and inside the main shroud.

The sail can't sheet inside the fwd shroud unless it is furled.

We only use the staysail in tough weather and in those conditions sailing very close hauled is not my preference but by moving the sheets inside the fwd shroud and only 2/3 of the staysail out we can if needed sail close hauled.

Good afternoon Eric,

You will find some pictures of the Stay Sail installed by the previous (previous) owner on: http://nikimat.com/staysail.html
If I remember correctly he installed it in 2010.

He own SM2K #289 for 12 year, then there was a brief owner for 6 months, then myself since 2012.
In my opinion he is a very knowledgeable sailor, own several Amel (Mango, Santorin, SM2K and currently a 54).
He crossed numerous time the Atlantic with #289, etc.

Personally, I think he did a clever job with the way he attached it through the deck (with minor support there) and to the hull, as this will avoir any pull of the deck.
Of course you have running backstay.

The only mistake I saw is the design of the "sail" as it requires the sheet to be pointed down, which require to add track on the deck.
I think the sail should have been design with a point of leech toward the winches.
Since (in my opinion) anything different than original equipment or design decreases the value of a vessel, I haven't commited yet to add track.

If there was no staysail, I am not sure I would add one.
But after 10 years of owner the vessel, he clearly felt the need for it, and the 54 and 55 have one as well.

Sure it will allow to use a smaller sail in stronger wind, but in the only 4 years I only have been 1.5 days in 37 knots of wind and 2 reef on the genoa was sufficient.
I am not sure (even if properly rigged) if the staysail would allow to sail much closer to the wind. A few times, I sail with the sheet "inside" the shroud, and genoa unfurl to the mast and obtained better results than with the staysail.

The main disadvantage is to tack.
It is NOT possible to have the genoa going through the small space in between the staysail and genoa.
So single handed like myself: I have to got close to the wind, furl in the genoa, then go off the wind, regain some speed, then tack, then unfurl.
If you have 2 crew with you, then you can do it with coordination.
Jibbing is possible, but I still furl it partially (again being single handed and not needing problem).

I don't know how the design on the 54 and 55 is and if they have the same issue to tack.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Eric,  we have the

D5LC 24volt. It's 14 years old and Espar may  now
have

a different one. Wonderful bit of kit. We ran it every
day

in Chile and still use it in the Med.

We also used two domestic fan heaters, 220v , 2kw each.
Run

both those and the Espar and your boat will be dry and
warm

in an instant.

Oh, and don't forget the aircon heaters, though they

aren't hugely effective when it's really cold ,
but

good for ventilating the boat.

I would like to know

what model number of an  espar heater that has been

what model some of you have on your Super

New Speakers - Old Compass - Different Readings

Mark Erdos

Okay, this is stupid of me so, please hold off on the "what were you thinking" comments. We are all entitled to a little bit of stupid once and a while...

The outside speakers in the cockpit were shot. I purchased a replacement pair based on size and square shape. I think the original speakers were custom built for Amel made by Audax and housed in the plastic casing (does not act as magnetic shield) . I purchased a set of DC Gold N4C speakers. The magnets on the new speakers are much more powerful than the old speakers. I did not realize the DC Gold speakers would have much higher power magnets. I had sent an email to the manufacturer and they assured me they would not interfere with the compass if they had 3 feet of space. This turned out to be total load of codswallop. I can move the compass with the speakers when they are 6 feet away. When the speakers were briefly in the cut-outs my compass was off by about 90 degrees. I now think the new DC Gold N4C speakers are going to be a lesson hard learned.

I would still like to replace the speakers. I am now looking at PolyPlaner MA-4054 4” cone size two-way coaxial speakers. PolyPlaner claims "ultra-low magnetic field speakers eliminates the problem of speakers magnets affecting navigation equipment such as compasses and autopilots". I guess we'll see.

The instructions for the Plastimo Offshore Compass simply reads:
Deviation correction :
If deviation is no more than 7° : simply draw a deviation table assessing the error, and keep it for future reference.

If deviation is between 7 and 20° : we recommend that you have your compass compensated as a start, and then draw a deviation table. The compensation procedure is a delicate operation and should ideally be carried out by a professional compass adjuster.
I have a Raythenon fluxgate compass connected to the auto-pilot. I also have secondary electronic compass connected to my navigation software. I know the normal variance between my magnetic compass and the fluxgate. My question is: Once I install the new speakers, how do I adjust the helm magnetic compass to compensate for the change in the magnetic field surrounding the compass?

Thanks!

Mark

Genoa Furler Identification

karkauai

Hi all,
I've taken my genoa furler off and dismantled it for powder coat painting.

Thanks,
Kent

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fore and aft loading a SM

In my case, as recommended in the owner manual, the bow thruster is pin every time I go sailing.
It usually take 30 minutes to clear the harbors or marina (before it is pin)
But twice (after Amel Martinique rebuilt the top of the bow thruster) then last year after I overall the lower unit, the new seal, foam, etc start to leak after 9 months.
Of course this is little at the beginning, then gradually more.
I honestly don't know what I should do differently.
Once I am off the marina I raise the bow thruster.
May be I lower it a little early and moving at 2 or 3 kts put a lot of pressure on the seal and start deforming it, I don't know, but they only last 9 months.

Hi Richard, thanks for this. You and Eric must have

were what mattered as in a seaway the thruster was often
well underwater. I have had good life from my seals changing
them on the bi annual haul out and occasionally the lip seal
between if I see any seepage. I agree with your suggestions.
I am concerned that some think that leakage is to be
expected and have water alarms or extra bilge pumps. If the
boat is at anchor or on a mooring for long periods the
bobbing up and down in a chop would be enough to cause water
entry if the seals were not effective.

Hi Danny. We have gotten good life out of

are bow thruster seals by one bring up the drive and
PINNING

it every time as soon as we care the dock or

mooring. Two we used a water proof grease on the

housing surface and outer shaft/tube before before we

reinstalled the thruster. Then lightly greased the tube
once

installed. This did two things one allowed the tube to
slip

freely passed the lip seal as well as to form a sealing

assist to the entire system. It worked well eight years.

With changes every two years. Good luck

Hi Alexandre,

You make a good point. However when we are sailing with

the

bow regularly plunging into the sea the bow thruster is

not

only well below the water there is considerable
pressure

applied to the seals by that plunging especially when

going

to windward in a significant sea when the water will

often

be to top the top of the bow. So we need good attention

to

both the lip seal and the foam seals.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fore and aft loading a SM

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

Hi Richard, thanks for this. You and Eric must have misunderstood me. When Alexandre mentioned trimming the bow down and that he was concerned that this put the bow thruster too low to the water I responded that the seals were what mattered as in a seaway the thruster was often well underwater. I have had good life from my seals changing them on the bi annual haul out and occasionally the lip seal between if I see any seepage. I agree with your suggestions. I am concerned that some think that leakage is to be expected and have water alarms or extra bilge pumps. If the boat is at anchor or on a mooring for long periods the bobbing up and down in a chop would be enough to cause water entry if the seals were not effective.

Hi Danny. We have gotten good life out of
are bow thruster seals by one bring up the drive and PINNING
it every time as soon as we care the dock or
mooring. Two we used a water proof grease on the
housing surface and outer shaft/tube before before we
reinstalled the thruster. Then lightly greased the tube once
installed. This did two things one allowed the tube to slip
freely passed the lip seal as well as to form a sealing
assist to the entire system. It worked well eight years.
With changes every two years. Good luck

Hello Danny,

Totally agree that there is considerable water pressure
while sailing.

I was referring when servicing the bow thruster and even
just sitting with the bow too bow heavy, where water could
keep coming in.

The seals last only 9 months since changed by both Amel then
second time myself, I am a little desapointed with that.

I usually go sailing twice a month, not sure this mater so
much.

So last year, I installed a high water alarm in the forward
bilge as well as a bilge pump, etc.

Hi Alexandre,

You make a good point. However when we are sailing with
the

bow regularly plunging into the sea the bow thruster is
not

only well below the water there is considerable pressure

applied to the seals by that plunging especially when
going

to windward in a significant sea when the water will
often

be to top the top of the bow. So we need good attention
to

both the lip seal and the foam seals.

Cheers

Danny

Good morning,

Sorry forgot the link:

http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_repair_issue.html

A word of caution loading too much, or too much on the

bow

your vessel.

Last year, when I slowly moved in I tried to balance
the

water line loading more toward the bow.

I also like better how she sailed (more weather helm).

BUT, when I serviced the Bow Thruster in the water, I

noted

the water was dangerous closed to the top of the cavity

where the bow thruster retract.

As you can see on the 5th picture. (Disregards the

comments

on the page, these are old)

An inch more and water would have come into the vessel.

So after that I got ride of a lost of thing and

rebalanced

evrything and now have over 3 inches space.

Sincerely, Alexandre

And you know it because the frequency of the
need

to get in the water and scrub around the waterline

increases

!

AND every SM that I

see is like ours...high in the bow and low in the

stern...too much weight aft...but why are they all
like

that

?...i think its because Amel never changed the

waterline

even though in the Maramu development they added a lot

more

weight aft of the centre of buoyancy

EG the drawings shown the rudder

stern gland above the waterline, but when we replaced

our

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fore and aft loading a SM

Hi Danny. We have gotten good life out of are bow thruster seals by one bring up the drive and PINNING it every time as soon as we care the dock or mooring.
Two we used a water proof grease on the housing surface and outer shaft/tube before before we reinstalled the thruster. Then lightly greased the tube once installed. This did two things one allowed the tube to slip freely passed the lip seal as well as to form a sealing assist to the entire system. It worked well eight years. With changes every two years.
Good luck

 Danny,
My seals last at least a year. It is very important to lift the bow thruster as soon as you are finished with. If you forget it down and motor or sail with it down you will take on water.

Hello Danny,

Totally agree that there is considerable water pressure while sailing.

I was referring when servicing the bow thruster and even just sitting with the bow too bow heavy, where water could keep coming in.

The seals last only 9 months since changed by both Amel then second time myself, I am a little desapointed with that.
I usually go sailing twice a month, not sure this mater so much.

So last year, I installed a high water alarm in the forward bilge as well as a bilge pump, etc.

Hi Alexandre,

You make a good point. However when we are sailing with the
bow regularly plunging into the sea the bow thruster is not
only well below the water there is considerable pressure
applied to the seals by that plunging especially when going
to windward in a significant sea when the water will often
be to top the top of the bow. So we need good attention to
both the lip seal and the foam seals.

Cheers

Good morning,

Sorry forgot the link:

http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_repair_issue.html

A word of caution loading too much, or too much on the
bow

your vessel.

Last year, when I slowly moved in I tried to balance the

water line loading more toward the bow.

And you know it because the frequency of the need

to get in the water and scrub around the waterline

increases

!

AND every SM that I

see is like ours...high in the bow and low in the

stern...too much weight aft...but why are they all like

that

?...i think its because Amel never changed the
waterline

even though in the Maramu development they added a lot

more

weight aft of the centre of buoyancy

EG the drawings shown the rudder

stern gland above the waterline, but when we replaced

our

packing recently it wasn't, the water was flooding

in....it doesn't now thank goodness !

How to search for topics/messages

kanalmamman@...

Hi all, I did spend some time trying to search for a couple of topics in the forum today. And I succeded! I made a small instruction for you, it is in the Files section.

I really hope this will work for all of you. BUT I have not tried it on a phone or tablet only on a laptop.

Eric,

Out sailing from point a to b today. I do not have access to my files.

If you are talking about Climma fan capacitors, I posted a detail posting that Gary Silver made. I created a photo and placed it in the Climma folder on the Amel Owners website. If you look at photos arranged newest first it will be the 1st.

If you are talking about the 230v engine room exhaust fan, it is the same capacitor as the 2 identical fan capacitors on the Climma control box...I am not sure, but think it is 2mfd.

All of these capacitors are "run capacitors.

I would buy 370 volts or higher

There are some photos in the photo section search on key word capacitor, or try following this link...not sure if the link will work:

Cheers

Danny

Good morning,

Sorry forgot the link:

http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_repair_issue.html

A word of caution loading too much, or too much on the
bow

your vessel.

Last year, when I slowly moved in I tried to balance the

water line loading more toward the bow.

AND every SM that I

see is like ours...high in the bow and low in the

stern...too much weight aft...but why are they all like

that

?...i think its because Amel never changed the
waterline

even though in the Maramu development they added a lot

more

weight aft of the centre of buoyancy

EG the drawings shown the rudder

stern gland above the waterline, but when we replaced

our

packing recently it wasn't, the water was flooding

in....it doesn't now thank goodness !
