Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Water Maker Info

Ian Shepherd <ocean53@...>

Hi Gary,

My apologies for not replying sooner, but I have been without the Internet
for a while here in Cyprus. I have also had to upgrade to Windows Xtra Pain
as there is no driver support for good old Windows2000 by Sony for their new
range of handycams!

It's interesting that your end caps are different to mine which are only 2.5
years old. What age is your water maker? I did notice on the Amel 54 that
the membrane housings and end caps looked much more solid and that they were
machined, but it was a totally different model to my 160 l/h unit. Maybe I
am not the only one to have an end cap split, and that is why they have gone
to a more robust and expensive design? I am wondering why you had to change
the caps as well as the membranes?

I hope to have a chat with Rod at the London Boat Show next week, and I will
ask him about the design history.

I have spoken with with Rosyne on the phone and I know what you mean. I have
also met M.Wagner, the boss, who has been most helpful in the past. If you
can get hold of him, he speaks good enough English to discuss the product. I
met him at the Cannes Boat Show.

I too have found Amel after sales to not only be very efficient, but very
fair too, sometimes not charging at all for a replacement part.

Now that I am back on my feet again, I will try and do some further tests on
the salinity probe. I will let you know the results. The plan is to put a
bung in the original probe socket then place the probe in a cup of seawater
with the unit running, and see if the output diverts overboard.

Best Wishes

dear ken
thanks for the advice, I do not have the type of solonoid you have
described but there is one fitted just below the starter on the
negative side, so I guess this is the problem. I now have an
occasional problem in stopping the yanmar 100 hp; not alwase but
occasionaly when I press the stop button nothing happens. Just above
the fuel pump there is a solinoid/relay again on the neg side , do
you think it is the same problem - sticking. The yacht was laid up
for almost 17 months although the batteries were perminantly hooked
up to shore power the engine and genset were mothballed. Thanks

CARAMELLE.
Amel has taken the prevention on galvanic action one step beyond
any
other boat mfg. They not only have an interrupt solenoid in the
positive circuit for the motor but they also have one on the
negative circuit. When the start button is pushed both of these
solenoids must engage at the same time for the motor to start.
The
cause of your problem is almost assuredly because the negative
solenoid is sticking. The good news is, it's easy to get to and
short stop around. It is in plain sight on the port side of the
engine, a cylinder shape about 1.25" dia. X 6" long, with a rubber
push button on either the top or the bottom depending on how it
was
mounted. It has been mounted in various positions in an attempt
to
lessen this probability of it's sticking. The next time this
happens, have one person hold down the rubber push button on the
solenoid while a second person pushes the start button. That's
it.
You obviously could short across the terminals as a permanent fix
but I would not recommend this, I think the second interrupt is a
good idea when it works. I found that the sticking problem
occurred
when the engine was fairly hot after an extended run and not given
enough idle time to cool down before shutting it off..

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I am considering to buy a Sharki (Limbo II), achored at Yacht club de

We're planning on cruising over to Ireland, the UK and Scandinavia
next year. I have a couple of questions for those out cruising the
higher latitudes.

1. What have other members done to insulate their boats to prevent or
minimize condensation while living aboard?

2. Our Amel doesn't have any forced air or natural draft heating
system. How have you heated your boat 24x7, specifically when passage-
making and living on the hook?

Thanks

Hello all,
My wife and are buying (should close on 1/11/06) a Super Maramu 2000.
I need two people to join us for a trip from South Florida to Tortola,

and return tickets (own expense) prior to departure. If you would like
to stay aboard in the BVI (or possibly USVI) for a few days to
dive/snorkle or just have fun you would be welcome to do so. I hate to
be "rude", but no one that has trouble with booze, or any drug(s) is
invited.

If you have an interest please contact me at agav8ter@... ASAP,
inlude a telephone number where I can contact you.

Thanks, Tony

PFM53 <pfm53@...>

Hello Maria and Ove

Happy New year to you as well. We raised the price because we have several
brokers who are wanting to sell her, and we needed to cover their commission.
If we sell her ourselves, we will of course reduce the price.

We have not done anything about the rigging, but have had no problems. All
other items (and more) have been repaired.

The moistrue content is not a problem. All boats have some, but the surveyer
told us there was no concern. He just reported the actual readings he found.

The boat has never been chartered. We bought it in Hyeres from what I think
was the original owner. They used it strictly for personal use (and not much
use at that).

Overall, she is in very good shape, and there are numerous items included I
forgot to put on the web site. For example, she has a brand new sea anchor,
numerous spare parts for the engine and bow thruster, a stabilizing drove for
use at anchor, etc.

Hi Cat & Jerry

Happy New Year

I have seen your yacht listed for quite some time, and I did notice
that the price have changed from 350 in the beginning to the present
375,I have been visiting your website several times during last
year, quite impressive and many good pictures, still have a few
questions : is all the recomended repairs from the survey in 2003
done? and have there been a complete mast and rigging survey as
stated in 2004? is the noted moisture readings in the survey a
reason to worry? and have there been done anything regarding this?
have the yacht ever been charted/ former history of use? and use
after 2003 when the survey were completed, location of the yacht.
time aspect of sale*?

I own SM#3 "Mallamok" and I also have the Perkins manual plus the

If you are still interested, I could copy both and send them to

I am an airline captain and have some options where to drop the

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have the service manual and parts manual for the Perkins
Prima M80T BB30143? Can I get a photocopy of these, at my cost? This
is the 80 hp four cylinder turbo that was factory installed in my 1989

distributor at the cost of over $110.

Bilge Pump Run On Alarm

amelliahona <no_reply@...>

The exhaust water temp probe is indeed a good idea. The same company that makes that
alarm makes a dual channel alarm that has a bilge water level alarm and more
importantly in my book a bilge pump run-on alarm. Once I had the seal on
the water maker low pressure feed pump rupture and it was pumping sea
water into the engine compartment. The amel supplied bilge alarm finally
sounded but there was no telling how long the bilge pump had been running
trying to keep up with the ingress of sea water and sea water was sloshing back
and forth in the engine compartment by then.

I have installed this dual channel alarm system and it gives me redundancy
for the bilge water level alarm and best of all it gives me early warning any time the
bilge pump runs for more than the preselected time (in my case I have it
set at two minutes).

John,
I figured out how to delete the photos and make smaller.
I have posted some pix.

One is of the Vetus Muffler after I motor sailed healed at 20 degrees to
starboard. Fortunately I had a spare muffler.
I have since invested $85- us for this item. It warns of a meltdown before
the engine alarm goes off.
It is the best money I have spent.
http://www.borelmfg.com/products_alarm.htm
I have also had a metal muffler made.

The second is of a tool cabinet I made here in New York as I didn't need all
that space in the hanging locker. There are also shelves from the factory in
the rear of the locker

The third is a photo of Pen Azens engine room showing a Racor Pre-Filter
that I also installed. The fuel goes through the filter and then pumped into
the tank.
It makes for VERY clean fuel.

The fourth is our helm showing Raymarine instruments and a chart plotter.
Last is the Raymarine nav station, the Raymarine multi station VHF is to the
left out of the picture. All the instruments are interfaced.

Happy Holidays,
Fair Winds,

Hello all,
The photo section only has 30 Mb of storage and was full up. On
checking the SM 319 album I found that we had uploaded five pics
without reducing them to Email or low quality size. Thus each one was
taking up between one and two megabytes of storage instead of between
thirty to 80 kilobytes. We have now reduced them and so there is now a
lot of vacant storage.
From a quick scan through the albums it appears that the only other
"offender" is Eric with his recent additions.

Happy Christmas to all, Anne and John SM319
