The main mast of my Santorin (122 Earendil) has slight froward rake at the top, instead of being straight or having a slight backwords lean at the top. It seems like the high cross-tree pull back the mast. I put photos of the mast in the appropriate section. How must I tune the rigging to solve or mitigate the problem??? Thank you all for the help. Bill & Judy, Chris, Anna-Sofie, Sharon and Drew,

Thank you very much for your helpful information.

Our situation is that we are United States citizens.  I am 67 and my wife is 53.  I have medical coverage through the VA, which in my area (Seattle) is excellent.  It is my wife, who has had some health issues, that is in need of some sort of coverage.

So I think we are going to access care abroad and pay as we go… when we need to we can and fly home for non-emergency care.   I think we will also purchase a catastrophic policy for Rebecca.  Obama Care can be accessed if we need to once we are back in the states.

I have been hospitalized in village hospitals in India twice with typhoid.  Both times I received excellent care (although I had to share my room with a gecko).  The doctors were excellent and the care was very inexpensive… $120 including meds for a 4-day hospital stay!

What may be of interest to others is that we have discovered that our Good Sam membership offers a program called Travel Assist.  A 15-month policy is only $79.00 for a couple.   Travel Assist provides flights home from anywhere in the world for a medical emergency or accident.  You do not have to be a RV owner to be a member of Good Sam and purchase their Travel Assist policy.   We have found our membership to be a very good investment and it covers our RV and both of our cars for towing or other roadside emergencies.

Again, thank you all for responding.  Your views were very helpful while we consider our options.

Regards,

Will and Rebecca

Re: Offshore Health Insurance

Will,

This is an incredibly complicated question.  I am not a tax or insurance advisor, but have been a physician for a long time, am a cruiser, and a US Citizen but also an EU resident.  Below are observations I've made professionally and while cruising.  It's such a complicated question, that everyone must eventually investigate and then decide what best suits their situation.

I assume you’re a US citizen AND not officially a resident of foreign country.  I don’t know how old you are.  There are several things to consider.

Every year, I see cruisers who develop unexpected medical problems.  I've had them myself.  A cruising friend developed a collapsed lung near Somoa.  He required emergent transport by ship to Apia-a very expensive trip.  In Apia, he received life-saving treatment, but couldn't leave there as ANZ refused boarding even when he met their demands.  He almost died but was eventually medevac'd via private air ambulance for almost $100K.  Most air ambulance companies will not transport without being relatively sure that they'll be paid.

Medicare does NOT cover anything overseas, including MedEvac.  If you get sick abroad and have MediCare, it would make sense to go back to the US or its territories.   To make matters worse, even though MediCare doesn't cover non-US care, you may still be required to pay part A MediCare payments if you're close to age 66.  Medical care, as Bill notes, will be much less expensive abroad, but may or may not be comparable.  AU, NZ, SGP, KUL, BKK, ZA, HKG, and some places in India, have really good care; in many places, it can be scary.

Since you have little control over where you'll need care, coverage is preferable even if  you're healthy.

Some US carriers provide international coverage, others don't.   My employee BCBS did, but our  UHC policy did not.

You also need to consider the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).  It requires  most US citizens to have health insurance or pay a penalty, starting modestly in 2014 and increasing in subsequent years.  If you are a resident of a foreign country (meet the IRS test for a foreign tax home), then you are exempt from the PPACA.  Check with a tax advisor or the IRS.  If you live in a state with ObamaCare, you might look into coverage with an exchange; coverage and price vary greatly;  not available in most 'Red' states.  A high deductable exchange plan and MedEvac insurance might be a good package.

An alternative is to get MedEvac insurance only for a few hundred $'s annually.  That way, you could get back to the US if you have US coverage, or somewhere competent and cheaper than the US if not.

Most EU and 1st world countries have coverage available for their residents (don't necessarily have to be a citizen-it's complicated and varies by country.)  If you're cruising, then in-country coverage typically won't cover you.  Most of my EU colleagues have some type of coverage.

Sorry this is so complicated.  It's bad in the US, but worse for Americans abroad.  Good luck.

Drew

We also own a 2001 model SM purchased a few years ago and have found it to be in absolute perfect condition. We simply serviced the motor, generator, replaced the lower rigging shrouds (survey found some very minor pitting), serviced the winches, bow thruster and emptied and cleaned the fuel tank then replaced the single fuel filter with new double fuel filters with quick change over.

We could not be happier with our purchase and have sailed across the Atlantic and Pacific and extensively in Australian waters. Naturally if your rigging has not yet been replaced since new, then, if surveyed and found in good condition, replacement should still be budgeted for in the next 3 - 5 years. (Fortunately Amel SM rigging tends to be "over engineered" and very solid - however at about the 15 years mark this should be seriously considered). See posting on this site about doing this for under $10,000 by sourcing original quality rigging ready made to measure from Amel's supplier and getting a trusted quality local rigger to do the work.

Being 13 years old we have recently had a few niggly problems with the original B&G instruments - wind speed (birds on top of masthead!!) and sonic distance/speed log. The log problem started after we lifted out the water this year with lift straps exactly at the s/s boat lift points only to find that the front lift point placed the lift strap exactly on top on the front, rear facing sonar eye!!! Will always put the front lift strap 12cm behind the lift points in future. We had intended to upgrade to the then latest & B&G instruments in a few years anyway before cruising again, so this has not really been of concern to us at all.

Other than the minor issues above our 2001 model SM is absolutely perfect and we would trust it in any seaway ahead of any other boat we could think of, including at least 95% of the new cruising boats rolling off the production lines this year.

Beyond a very good survey report (including the rigging) we would completely trust Bill's advice about the previous owners. In our view it is all about who owned it ahead of you, and how they cared for her. Sounds like you have a great vessel there and in our humble opinion it is worth paying a little extra for a good boat as you will find it cheaper in the long run. Beyond this I see John & Anne's 2001 model is also for sale in Malta. I am sure John would have kept that one in mint condition too.

All the best with your decision making.

Duane,
I know all previous owners well. Without seeing her for years, I am certain that there is probably very few Super Maramus this age that are in better condition. I believe if you buy your Amel based on all of the previous owners, you will get a boat as good as the owners. If the previous owners of Norfolk were the following, they are some of the the best owners you could hope for:
Potter - Lorado
Steele - Doodlebug
Hayden - Norfolk
I am confused at the HIN, because that does not seem correct for the SM that I know of as Norfolk...check the number you posted. For instance, the HIN for hull number 387, BeBe, is AMLSM387I203. The digit between the 7 and 2 is the letter "I". This letter indicates the month that the hull was laid up.

Are there any recalls from Amel, or items that have a bad history on the boat?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] 2001 Amel SM (Norfolk) HIN 1045353

Duane,

If you're looking to buy a boat at "significant discount", you can probably find some Beneteau, Hunter, or Catalina with a desperate seller. There are rarely occasions where someone is giving away an Amel at a cheap price. If you're looking at a brokerage boat in Ft Lauderdale, it's probably listed by Joel Potter. Joel has represented Amel since the 1970's. He has a good reputation in the Amel community and knows what the boats are worth.

You will find lower prices in the Caribbean but many of those boats will have more wear and tear. There are some downsides to buying a boat that was not originally sold into the US market and if you find a good broker, he can educate you on those details.

You won't find a decent SM under $300K. You may be able to buy one for less than that, but you will find that you have $300K or more in it before you can go sailing with confidence.
