Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Raymarine spx30 Auto pilot

Hello Steve. Thanks for your message. I am located in Spain, and I am also slowly preparing the boat for a circunnavigation. I only need the control unit (I guess it is what you call "the computer"), since I already have two power arms (probably what you call "control head"). Actually this would be the spare unit. To be honest I don't have the slightest idea of how much to pay for your SPX30 since it isn't manufactured anymore and most boats are installing new models (as you are doing in your own boat) so there's not much of a second hand market. My sugestion is... tell how much would be a fair deal for you to sell and for me to buy, considering that there will be shipment expenses from USA to Europe to take care of.
Best. Victor
PD.- Sorry for my English. I wish it wasn't so rusty.

Jeff,
Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump Impeller Kit - Part #3593660. Also, there is a special tool for removing the impeller. Ask Volvo Penta for it. It works like screw that screws in the centre of impeller and pulls it out.

I'm currently in NY and I'd like to get a spare impellor to have aboard when I return to SC to leave for my trip south. Does anyone with the Volvo 110 know the part number of the impellor?

Sorry to post another newbie question,
but I just want to confirm that the prop and hub can be
replaced in situ; that the shaft extends far enough out of
the housing to push the hub on and feed the pin through
without having to drop the thruster out of the
boat.
And, for the record,
through the fates of multiple emails and phone calls, I
ended up with one extra spare prop and hub, in case anyone
is in need :)
Thanks in

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Bow Thruster Prop replacement.

Agree with Joel, I had two spare, but now just one! It was easy to replace. I tried from the dinghy which was awkward. So I put on my face mask, got in the water with a screwdriver and the job was done in 15 minutes.
Either be next to a pontoon or have a helper in a dinghy alongside to pass the screws, pin etc.

If I lose another one I will immediately get a spare replacement.  It's no go manoeuvring without it!

Incidentally mine was lost through my not noticing a carelessly thrown bow line back on board by a mariniero. It was dangling from the bow and got sucked in. No noise. Just no bow thruster! The fail safe nylon bolts shear quickly to protect the unit.

Sorry to post another newbie question, but I just want to confirm that the prop and hub can be replaced in situ; that the shaft extends far enough out of the housing to push the hub on and feed the pin through without having to drop the thruster out of the boat.

And, for the record, through the fates of multiple emails and phone calls, I ended up with one extra spare prop and hub, in case anyone is in need :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi Gary,
That's affirmative.  It's not hard to replace the prop while in the water using a snorkel.  If you drop the pin, it will sink to the bottom, if you drop the nylon bolts, they will float off with the current.  I'd recommend changing the nylon bolts each time you remove the prop, which I do every time I haul the boat.  I bought some at a local hardware once and had to trim a couple of threads off to keep them from bottoming out on the back side of the prop.  My prop is a tight fit, but can be removed and replaced with a little wiggle and pull effort.

One of my props has 8 bolts and the other has 6 bolts.  Make sure you have the proper hub for your spare prop.

Trevor,

BeBe, #387, delivered Jan 2003 has a 100hp Yanmar and a ZF Hurth, 2.8, hydraulic reverse drive transfer case.

There were several engines used in SM's and I believe each engine had a different transmission. The screen/filter on the above transmission is easy to clean.

I hope this helps you.

Hello Trevor,

All SM’s have an Amel specific dual 90 degree gearbox.  … or C drive in Amel parlance.  I know of an Swiss owned early SM which went back to shaft drive following the numerous reliability issues with the alu casing in the early days.  Subsequently, Amel retrofitted a steel casing.  Few problems since.

I do not think anyone has found a supplier outside the Amel supply chain yet… they are costly.

Someone of this parish had his gearbox rebuilt recently and will hopefully pipe in with source and cost.

GL and Merry Xmas.

That is good news. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you have a new C-Drive in hand soon, and successfully installed.

Liz and I were re-launched at Fernandina last week, and are tucked into our winter slip in St Augustine. The project list is slowly getting shorter, and we expect to be underway full time by June.

Hi and Happy Holidays to all!

I finally heard from Amel about my C Drive.  It was sent to the supplier in France who repaired it, but found that the bearings were too loose for them to be comfortable sending it back to me.  They are going to send me a new one which will take several weeks to build and will cost 2930 Euros plus taxes and shipping.  That's a lot less than I anticipated.  I should receive it in Feb if it doesn't get stuck in Customs again.

While it looked like something that could have been repaired in the US, Joel strongly urged me to send it back to Amel for inspection and repair.  Thank you for that recommendation, Joel, I'm not sure that anyone here would have recognized the tolerances required of this proprietary Amel drive.

I guess I'll be sailing by this Spring.

Steady as she goes,
