Hello Steve. Thanks for your message. I am located in Spain, and I am also slowly preparing the boat for a circunnavigation. I only need the control unit (I guess it is what you call "the computer"), since I already have two power arms (probably what you call "control head"). Actually this would be the spare unit. To be honest I don't have the slightest idea of how much to pay for your SPX30 since it isn't manufactured anymore and most boats are installing new models (as you are doing in your own boat) so there's not much of a second hand market. My sugestion is... tell how much would be a fair deal for you to sell and for me to buy, considering that there will be shipment expenses from USA to Europe to take care of.
Best. Victor PD.- Sorry for my English. I wish it wasn't so rusty.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Bow Thruster Prop replacement.
Ian Park
Agree with Joel, I had two spare, but now just one! It was easy to replace. I tried from the dinghy which was awkward. So I put on my face mask, got in the water with a screwdriver and the job was done in 15 minutes. Either be next to a pontoon or have a helper in a dinghy alongside to pass the screws, pin etc. If I lose another one I will immediately get a spare replacement. It's no go manoeuvring without it! Incidentally mine was lost through my not noticing a carelessly thrown bow line back on board by a mariniero. It was dangling from the bow and got sucked in. No noise. Just no bow thruster! The fail safe nylon bolts shear quickly to protect the unit. Ian. SN 96 'Ocean Hobo'

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Bow Thruster Prop replacement.
Hi Gary, That's affirmative. It's not hard to replace the prop while in the water using a snorkel. If you drop the pin, it will sink to the bottom, if you drop the nylon bolts, they will float off with the current. I'd recommend changing the nylon bolts each time you remove the prop, which I do every time I haul the boat. I bought some at a local hardware once and had to trim a couple of threads off to keep them from bottoming out on the back side of the prop. My prop is a tight fit, but can be removed and replaced with a little wiggle and pull effort. One of my props has 8 bolts and the other has 6 bolts. Make sure you have the proper hub for your spare prop. Kent SM 243 Kristy

Trevor, BeBe, #387, delivered Jan 2003 has a 100hp Yanmar and a ZF Hurth, 2.8, hydraulic reverse drive transfer case. There were several engines used in SM's and I believe each engine had a different transmission. The screen/filter on the above transmission is easy to clean. I hope this helps you. Bill BeBe, #387

Hello Trevor,

All SM’s have an Amel specific dual 90 degree gearbox. … or C drive in Amel parlance. I know of an Swiss owned early SM which went back to shaft drive following the numerous reliability issues with the alu casing in the early days. Subsequently, Amel retrofitted a steel casing. Few problems since. I do not think anyone has found a supplier outside the Amel supply chain yet… they are costly. Someone of this parish had his gearbox rebuilt recently and will hopefully pipe in with source and cost. GL and Merry Xmas. Jean-Pierre Germain SY Eleuthera, SM 007.
