Bill asked if I would get the name of the company that built the C Drive for Amel...in case at some point Amel was no longer in business.  I asked Maud for the name of the company and contact information so I could contact them directly to ask what they thought caused the damage to my prop shaft and what the problem was that made the drive unrepairable.

She politely told me that "It is not possible to contact the company that worked on your old C-drive directly but as previously explained the play in the bearing support was too important."

Soooo, it sounds like they don't want us to be dealing directly with the machine shop that builds the Cdrive.
I'm sure that if Amel went out of business, Joel or Olivier would help us contact them.

I would like to know in more detail about the problem with the "bearing support", and if that was in any way related to the electrolytic damage (ie was there damage to the bearing as well?)

HNY… though your start is ominous.

IIWM… I would change the innards of the bilge pump; its doubtful diesel fuel did it any good.

Hi Richard, that is right and what I did, however even with a nut at only one end the same applies. There is a clearance issue on the motor side but can be overcome with care.

Hi all, replacing the coupler bolts can be done
without removing the vetus coupler from the shaft. Hacksaw
the head off the old bolt and use a replacement threaded at
both ends. Whole lot simpler than fighting to remove the
coupler.

Dave
The Coupling is a Vetus 35MM unit but with an Amel twist. What's new!!!!. The Vetus replacement is 10MM too long and is a screw on tightener.  The Amel one uses the key to secure the item and is one solid piece.

Hi Alexandre,
I replaced mine a few years ago with a Jabsco pump.  It pumps a little more water, is a little louder, and has worked flawlessly.  I had to build a small shelf to locate it where the old one was.

Hi all, replacing the coupler bolts can be done without removing the vetus coupler from the shaft. Hacksaw the head off the old bolt and use a replacement threaded at both ends. Whole lot simpler than fighting to remove the coupler.

Hi, to move the engine needs no lifting. Simply undo the four bolts attaching the engine to the angle iron engine bed, undo the nuts on the coupler and the engine easily slides back. I used a piece of 2 x 3 (75 x 50mm) timber as a lever.

The engine has to be
moved back from the transmission. Undo engine mounts and
hoist with mizzen halyard . The cockpit cover lifters will
have to be removed to allow the cover to open all the way.
The flex coupling then can be removed. It is held in place
by a shaft key. This may take some effort as it may be
frozen on the shaft. Penetrating oil and a steel wedge will
help loosen the flex coupling. Once off then a new bolt can
be used. I believe the bolts are hardened steel (Black).

I have a 1998 Amel 53
Supermaramu and discovered that one of the 4 coupling bolts
that attach the engine outdrive to the transmission has
broken off.  I believe this was probably caused by
engine/transmission malalignment, but not sure.  Meantime,
I tried to see if there was an easy way to install a new
bolt, but do not see a way to do so.  Any assistance would

Hi all, replacing the coupler bolts can be done without removing the vetus coupler from the shaft. Hacksaw the head off the old bolt and use a replacement threaded at both ends. Whole lot simpler than fighting to remove the coupler.

Dave et al,
        If you find the flange does not want to come off the shaft, get a piece of 1/2" steel plate, drill four holes in it aligning to the bolt holes on the flange. Place a 7/8" or 22mm  socket between the shaft and the steel plate, put some bolts in that you never want to use again and tighten the whole thing up.
You may even bend the steel plate, the bolts will stretch
 but eventually that flange will come off - it has to and none of the important parts will be damaged.

Hi Dave,
I've replaced these on two Santorin's - same issue with one bolt being broken. On both of those Amel had welded a small piece of rod to the bolt head that a 90 degree bend so it went into the adjacent hole in the Vetus coupler and held the bolt from turning when you tightened the nut.  Handy, but no need to duplicate that as you can easily hold the bolt head with a second wrench as you tighten the nut, which should be a Nyloc style. 
Also, I was unable to get exactly the right length bolt and had to cut off longer ones to fit.
When removing and the bolts and tightening the new ones, you can prevent the shaft from turning with a long screwdriver wedged crosswise on two other bolts. 
Most difficult part was removing the coupling - both were frozen solid and took a few hours to break free with steel chisels as wedges and a hand sledge and heat from an acetylene torch.  Conventional wheel pullers likely won't fit and on one I had a local shop fabricate one of 1/2 inch plate steel that finally worked.
