The covers on my shrouds were tight, and worn out. I replaced them with sizes to match the shroud diameters, but particularly the forward lowers are now wearing where the sheets are in contact with them, I think it would be better to have larger diameters covers that could roll with the sheets.

My previous boat had PVC electrical conduit about twice the diameter of the shrouds and that worked well, until the UV broke them down, but of course you have to dismantle the rigging to get them on.
I may do that for the fwd lowers.

On pg 28 they give a good method to tension the stays to 15 to 20% of their breaking strength using a simple measuring stick rather than a costly gauge. That's the "really tight" that you want and it is not subjective, which is what I suspect Dena is concerned with - I agree.  After you tension them correctly with that technique, it's easy to get the "feel" for that proper tension by hand for future checks and re-tensioning.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] flexible rubber coupling

Hi Paul
Out of curiosity, in what way did Amel modify the Vetus coupling? I didn't notice any modification on mine or a couple of others, other than that they welded a little rod on the bolt ends to prevent them from turning when the bolts are tightened - handy but certainly not necessary.

As this flex coupling has been modified by Amel, it is best to order directly from them. Cost as 331.08 Euros

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bilge pump recommendation - AMFA out of business?

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning JLuc,

Do you know where I could obtain the repair kits for my AMFA/REYA Marina ZZ Bilge pump and AMFA 66B ?

I wouldn't mind having a spare fresh water pump (AMFA) as this is something I use all the time…

Hope you have a great year 2015.

Sincerely, Alexandre

No,

It is not correct,

AMFA re-dessign the pump and the new dessign integrate a
new gear.

Parts are not the same between old and new !

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: After Market Service

Alexandre Uster von Baar

I have a limited but rather positive overall experience with after market service.
I have ordered parts from both Martinique and La Rochelle.
When they had in stock, they were very quick to respond.
A little more difficult if research is involved…
I dealt with Jean (Colin) in Martinique and Maud in France.

Amel Caraibe is now, indeed, based in Le Marin
Martinique. We just left after an emergency stop, which Jean
Collin of Amel and his team solved very efficiently.
Excellent set up with highly qualified engineers. Jean's
support and commitment is truly exceptional! Getting into
the marina is a bit troublesome as it is always very much
fully booked. However with over 30 Amel yachts based in Le
Marin Amel owners seem to have a bit of priority. Le Marin
has every bit of technical support one would be looking for.
Good place to have repair work done.

We actually had a similar experience with Amel Hyeres where
we stayed last summer. Excellent support with the Amel staff
going way beyond their line of duty. Truly amazing support
as well.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] flexible rubber coupling

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Alssandro,

Last year in Bimini (Bahamas) I met Stephano Orso and Daniele who mentioned they know you!

I am not sure I can help as I have an older Super Maramu (2000) with a the Volvo engine, but in my case I use the Vetus Type 6 Flexible Coupler the part is KO18 for the rubber

Just read Paul's post and looks like it has been modified…

Buon anno.
Spero di incontrarti un giorno.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Super Maramu Rigging tension

Terence Singh

I am sheepishly writing this as I feel that this topic has been addressed numerous times with many responses.

Old age may be creeping in on my side as I am still unable to sift through all the information and find a definative method for adjusting the tension to a correct set point on our standing rigging.

I hear the following from previous comments

-  masts must be vertical in relation to the deck.

- Rigging must be tight, tighter than conventionaly built boats

- No bend in the masts at all

Can anyone help me simply understand what tight rigging means? How do I simply know when to stop turning the turn buckles.

Any help here would help put my wifes mind to rest as Dena continually asks this question of me.

Many thanks

In my opinion, keeping them tight is the ONLY option !
I'm sure they break because they come loose.

No,
It is not correct,
AMFA re-dessign the pump and the new dessign integrate a new gear.
Parts are not the same between old and new !

Hi Alexandre,
I replaced mine a few years ago with a Jabsco pump.  It pumps a little more water, is a little louder, and has worked flawlessly.  I had to build a small shelf to locate it where the old one was.

Amel Caraibe is now, indeed, based in Le Marin Martinique. We just left after an emergency stop, which Jean Collin of Amel and his team solved very efficiently. Excellent set up with highly qualified engineers. Jean's support and commitment is truly exceptional! Getting into the marina is a bit troublesome as it is always very much fully booked. However with over 30 Amel yachts based in Le Marin Amel owners seem to have a bit of priority. Le Marin has every bit of technical support one would be looking for. Good place to have repair work done.
We actually had a similar experience with Amel Hyeres where we stayed last summer. Excellent support with the Amel staff going way beyond their line of duty. Truly amazing support as well.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Amel Shroud Covers

Alan Leslie

The covers on my shrouds were tight, and worn out. I replaced them with sizes to match the shroud diameters, but particularly the forward lowers are now wearing where the sheets are in contact with them, I think it would be better to have larger diameters covers that could roll with the sheets.
My previous boat had PVC electrical conduit about twice the diameter of the shrouds and that worked well, until the UV broke them down, but of course you have to dismantle the rigging to get them on.
I may do that for the fwd lowers.

Hi did you use rigid PVC.

If so did you split the PVC or did you just cut a slit in it?

Ian,

I have not seen the Amel covers but I had impression they were somewhat tight fitting. The PVC pipe I used was quite a bit larger than the wire so as not to trap anything. Nathan Bossett who is on this list and now owns my former boat could say exactly but I think perhaps the inner diameter of the PVC is 20 or 22mm. It was open on the bottom so water could run freely.

Hello Dave,

I am not so sure that the Amel covers are that tight. I use the large (12mm) ones on all the main mast lowers which provide a fairly loose fit. What size tubing are you using?

Ian,

Many riggers recommend against the use of tightly fitting covers over standing rigging. I agree with them. What I use on the lower sections to prevent sheets from chafing is some PVC pipe from the hardware store. If you don't wish to remove any fittings, you can slit the PVC with a saw and then use some tie-wraps which can be covered with vinyl tape.
