Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Interior Upholstery

As some of you know, I was in the furniture manufacturing business for many years. This is something I know a little about.

If I were reupholstering the salon and did not want to use the polyester microfiber fabric that Amel used in SMs, my next choice would be Ultraleather brand urethane coated fabric. This looks like and feels like leather. It is as porous  and breathable as leather. They produce this urethane in 54" and 2m wide rolls and sell cut orders by the yard or meter through fabric distributors and designers in the EU & USA. I would pick the smoother grain (embossing). Google for more.

I have photos of a SM which was reupholstered with Ultraleather. It is beautiful. A German gal in France did the job. She also used new foam and a layer of memory foam. She also used double-needle stiching for extra detail and added strength.

Let me know if you want more details and or photos.

Thanks Bill & Haldun
Sounds pretty impressive so will follow up re a kit as recommended.
Does anyone out there have some pictures they could upload of the excellent way in which Amel have installed these with the slider unit etc..,

Many thanks Peter and Andrew for your early input so far. Looking forward to also hearing from others out there who already have a dive compressor installed on their vessel in terms of how well it works and if it is worth losing all that valuable space in the port cockpit locker?

Also has anyone come up with a better aftermarket dive compressor which could possibly fit in the large engine room? Watching this video they have mounted a compressor in the engine bay and it fills tanks up in 20mins. Anyone else done so and what brand/model did you put in?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Buying a 2000 or a Red Line edition SM

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Hayden,

Thanks for that. I believe that the SM and 54 are the best boats that Amel ever built, and models prior to the SM are certainly noteworthy.  Until you have owned one of these very capable cruising yachts, there is no way that you can understand all of the wonderful things Henri Amel did for us.

Most of the Amel owners I have met are aware of this and try to keep their Amel in a condition which is ready for Henri's inspection. Sometimes I think that once we own one of these fine yachts we become part of a very special cult of Amel owners. Unfortunately, not all owners are part of the cult and you should evaluate the previous owner as carefully as you evaluate the Amel. Recently, I was almost in tears as I checked out a SM for a prospective buyer because of the abuse and neglect the owner caused to a Red Line SM...it was horrible! Finding a great Amel will become more difficult and you should use someone who knows these boats and owners to help you in your search...nobody is more knowledgeable than Joel, and I think everyone here knows that.

Early in our ownership of BeBe I was impressed by how several owners shared information through this group, especially, Gary Silver. Because of Gary's example, I decided to do my best to document some of the things that will make maintenance and care as easy as Henri had envisioned and designed. I think I could have done better and someone else certainly will.

If we all try to love these boats as many of us do, we will be able to pass them on to many generations of sailors who will cross oceans in comfort and safety. They too, will become part of this "cult."

Thank you Captain Henri Amel.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Interior Upholstery

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Hello Chris,

We had Alcantara as a recommendation and although my GF was 100% in favour, I exercised my VETO.  The problem with this cloth is what do you do when some bimbo places her sun cream covered back 40 on the cloth??

I reckon that the problem would send my GF into orbit… (she goes there easily.)  Being a man of peace, I don't need this problem.

So I went for Sunbrella Ice white… because it is vinyl based and easy to clean..(I’ve been getting back talk ever since but I will not relent.) (Depending on the size of the Sunbrella wholesaler, each one may propose different shades… the only white which will be be consistent is the one from Sunbrella direct)

One comment, a mate with a 54, had his interior redone by Riza and he says its well made.  I went by his comments… and after seeing the early trial pieces, we’ll have a good final result.

I also had the rear cabin remade; removal of the 3rd berth, master bed size increase and the addition of lots of additional storage.  Major rework there…

:-)

It will work for us.

Jean-Pierre

The Cream and Eggshell could work but what are your experiences. We don't want anything too stark, is resistant to wear and grime and cleans easily.

Is it best to have a plain fabric or textured?
