Chris,

Sunbrella is brand that offers many qualities, patterns, colors and textures.

Specifically what does he suggest?

Eric,

I was reading cleaning info yesterday. There is a method for cleaning ballpoint ink, but you have do act quickly...following from ultraleather:

Ballpoint Pen Ink**
**For tough stains clean using isopropyl/rubbing alcohol. After cleaning, rinse surface with clean water and wipe dry. Prompt attention is important for successful removal of any stain.

Hi Paul,

To date, I only have quotes to do the Salon areawithr new fabric and cushions. For Alcantara the price was 4000 euro and for UltraLeather it is 6200 euro. For the rest of the insides, Riza recommends Sunbrella but I do not have a quote for that yet.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Onan MDKAL B Specs 12 Volt starter?

Hello Alan,

I goofed!!

The part in reference is from the Onan folks.  It manages the generator output.

So, to be correct, the sentence should read “Onan 0305-0896”.  Worth a fortune on the east side of the Atlantic.  I’ll get mine when passing through New York or Washington DC.

Hello Alexandre,

I asked Onan last week and they told me exactly as per Bill’s answer.

It is a bog standard Kubota 1105 CC starter… nothing done to it.

Another remark from Onan… do not bother having a starter as a spare; “they never fail”… However, as per Onan recommendation, I am ordering the Automatic Voltage Regulator.   Part number 0305-0896 apparently, they fail far more regularly.

I think it is the same starter.
Check the diesel engine. If it is a Kubota 3-Cyl Diesel
Model D1105, it is the same starter on each the MDKAL and
the MDKAV

Bill,

We have tried alcohol, goof off, hair spray, fantastic, brake fluid, Clorox stain remover, ink be gone, and a dozen other chemicals- nothing seems to work.

Try on a small swatch of the material. Possibly if it is removed immediately it might come off but we usually notice the stain after 5 or 10 minutes and NADA.

White and cream are the worst colors for ink stains.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] More question on Onan starter

Eric Freedman

Joel,

That is a great observation.

It tickled my memory. I recall having 2 jobs one summer during college.

One was working in a hardware store.

When we received bronze screws for example we took the cost and added ½ and put them in the bronze hardware section.

Cost 10 cents sells for 15 cents.

The other half of the box we put in the marine section ad it sold them for double – 20 cents.

Your point is well taken.

Bill, in college back, at the dawn of electricity, I wrote a paper that took
the same electric motor, wired to accept different voltages as per the
application, but essentially the same shell built by the same people in the
same factory at the same time of day, applied to different applications.

The washing machine drain pump was the cheapest, natch, as even poor people
have clothes washers. As a swimming pool filter pump motor, the price
doubled as everybody knows you have to have a few coins in your pocket to
have a pool. Next was a marine bilge pump motor. Yep, almost doubled again.
Yachts are for rich people, don't you know. Last was a hydraulic actuator
pump for landing gear/flaps on an aircraft. 1000 % increase over the washing
machine as only fat cats with dough to burn have airplanes.

Sure, some of the increase was for liability and eventual interaction with
lawyers and for certification processes for the FAA, but 1000 % ??? Still
and all, I'll take free market capitalism over communism any

day. At least I am free to buy one ( and own an airplane and go where I want
in it.). Shopping should involve more than reaching for the thing you want.

As you know, one of my cash reduction programs is racing vintage formula
cars. I often am able to cross reference all kinds of stuff for even less
than a third of the cost of the same part from Racers R Us. Just make sure
you get apples to apples on the specs.

Alexandre,

If you take the starter to a starter / alternator  rebuilder you can probably get one for a few hundred dollars or less. My 175 amp alternator cost $450- from a starter rebuilder,

When I have a spare, I always install and use it . Then I know that the spare is correct and works. I purchased a spare rebuilt starter for my yanmar and it has been working for over 4,000 miles.

Thanks Ian.  It amazes me how much useful info is available on this site.  Do you happen to know what the resin problem was.  Will I continue to have problems with incurred resin even after the fix?

Thanks for your help.

Sorry, can't comment on the repair process or the cost but my gut says 25K nzd seems a bit steep.  Perhaps NZL isn't the place for economical repairs it was five years ago.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Contender sailcloth

Hello!
We will buy new sails for 2016 season as our newly bought SM sails are in poor condition, however will use this season to learn how it is to sail on own a SM before making major investment, our thought is hydranet triradial probably with circular profile battens to get a more stable leach. so please send contact details for Banks.
I learned that a sail cloth named Vectron are at lower price and have at least same "performance" i.e low stretch and good durability. Have any of you any experiences in VECTRON

Alex,

I am not sure of the answer, but it may be because these Kabuto diesels are also commonly used in agriculture. We all know that when you label the identical part for marine use, the price increases.

I have been told that we are much better off sourcing non-marine parts for the Onan diesel from a Kabuto dealer. Since the isolation is done in relays before the starter, this may be just the time to test that theory.

We got a new set in hydranet triradial for a fairly lower price with our sailmaker Banks in Leghorn (livorno, tuscany). It's really a good set and our SM has increased her performance in comparison to the original french set. I guess they can send the sails everywhere in the world. If any of you might be interested in asking for a quotation I may give the coordinates.

Eric,

I see nobody came forward with Contender info/recommendations.

I wish I could help you, but it is not a fabric I am familiar with. When I was researching sailcloth I found that the worse values were the "special" step up brand names offered by brand name sailmakers like North Sails, UK, and others.

As you probably know, Contender has several qualities, prices and constructions, so it is probably not reliable to just ask about the main brand.

When I was looking, I became impressed with the German company, Dimension Polyant and specifically their HydraNet sailcloth. This is what I ended up buying from a sailmaker in Izmir, Turkey. A full set of sails cost about 11,500 euro in a triradial cut with a few other extras. I think that Dacron was about 7,400 euro for a full set, triradial cut (what our Amels came with). The guy in Izmir ships all over the world.

Here is the hydranet link:

When I search for these, I find price for less than $150, sometime even less than $100…

I am missing something?
If I may ask, how much did you pay for it?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Contender sailcloth

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

I have been investigating a new set of Sails for Kimberlite.

The Contender sailcloth seems like a very nice cloth to use on a radial cut sail.

Any opinions?

I think it is the same starter.
Check the diesel engine. If it is a Kubota 3-Cyl Diesel
Model D1105, it is the same starter on each the MDKAL and
the MDKAV
