Ha! Just as I thought. But, I guess they failed one part of the test which was to include you in the loop. Now that you are in the loop, all of us can be too.

Keep us posted.

Hello Vic,

I do not know the alternatives for a Maramu but I would start by calling Amel Service Après Vente (S.A.V) and talk to Maude.  She will probably offer some solution.

Cheers,

Hallo everybody,
I have just discovered during my Easter sailing in Croatia, that mainsail outhaul electromotor on my Maramu no. 199/1986  died.
There was water ingress and heavy corrosion of the whole motor. I cant find any label on the motor body.
I believe that my Maramu 46 is from the year when  Amel started electric sail furling.

Does anybody know the electromotor specification and supplier of the spares?

I look forward to hearing from You

Hi Ross

Thanks for the info, the offer to help and the kind comments! :) You needn't worry about us getting claustrophobic. Our PDQ cat is pretty tiny and we had no problem on her. In fact, we have been aboard a Maramu and thought that it was quite spacious. It is a little more "tippy" than we're used to but I'm pretty sure we can deal with that. :)

Mike

PS: Joel's name has come up often since we've started looking at Amels. I guess I should send him an email.

Hi Mike and Rebecca,
welcome to the world of Amel, i used a surveyor from Florida that was recommended by Joel potter who is THE Amel guy in n America and the first person to talk to in your search. His contract info: jfpottercys at att dot net or 954-8one2.2485. The surveyor is Paul anstey, email: : panstey at mindspring dot com.
I have been restoring a Maramu part time for the last 3 years and will be glad to answer any questions you guys have. You have taught me many things as I have been reading your blog since you passed me going south on the Hudson river many years ago and would love to return the favor. Only one thing...I hope you guys don't get
claustrophobic in a mono, your cats were huge! Good luck, it's a great boat and the help and knowledge and support you will get from this diverse group is well...amazing.
One love,
Ross (in NYC) (for my LAST winter)

Good morning Mike,

I used Martial Barriel when I purchased my Supe Maramu 3 years ago.
He did a good job, would use him again.

Thank you, Sir! I am paying attention.
With respect to Surveyors, is there
anyone who is particularly recommended in the

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] New to the Forum

Good morning Marco,

Welcome to the Group!
I am Swiss as well, went to school in France.
Have been living for the last 2 years on my Super Maramu 2000.
Last year was in the Bahamas, now in Florida for repair, leaving at the end of the month.
Hope your dream comes true!

Dears,thanks for
letting a none Amel owner joining the Forum
:-)
In the meantime, I think is
just normal curtesy to introduce myself:
I grew up on a lake in Switzerland and
spend a bigger portion of my childhood on the water. I'm
back to work since a bit over a year after a two year
sailing experiment with my wife. We sailed from the east
coast to the Bahamas, down the Caribbean and then back via
Bermuda to the east cost where we sold our then Island
Packet.
My dream is to set off
again, sooner than later and preferably in an Amel 54. It
may take time to do it again, but nevertheless I'm
looking forward to become part of this
community.
cheers Marco

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] New to the Forum

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Welcome aboard,

I took the same path as you: first joining this forum and analysing the posts and responses to the various niggles and problems.

I’ve been amazed at the support and KNOWLEDGE in this community.

At the final analysis before purchase, the support of this forum was a positive factor in buying an SM. I purchased Eleuthera in July 2014 and sailed her to Turkey for a thorough refit. (I checked Oysters, Contests, HR, IP, Van den Stadt, Northwinds, Bristols etc before buying).  None of these have support of Amels.  Period.

Good luck with your search.  What are you looking for?  Santorin, Maramu, SM, 54?? or a new 55??

Cheers,

Jean-Pierre Germain

In the meantime, I think is just normal curtesy to introduce myself:

I grew up on a lake in Switzerland and spend a bigger portion of my childhood on the water. I'm back to work since a bit over a year after a two year sailing experiment with my wife. We sailed from the east coast to the Bahamas, down the Caribbean and then back via Bermuda to the east cost where we sold our then Island Packet.

My dream is to set off again, sooner than later and preferably in an Amel 54. It may take time to do it again, but nevertheless I'm looking forward to become part of this community.

cheers

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Old Maramu 46 mainsail outhaul electromotor specification

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] second boom for AMEL 54

Peter Forbes

Wlofgang,

I know that Jean Metz, who is currently in the Pacific on his circumnavigation, had a second deck mounted pole put on his Amel 54 by Emek Marin in Gocek, Turkey.

I do not know if it is a success or not - but he is certainly making very good times on the legs of his voyage so far - I therefore might guess it has been a success.

best wishes

Watermaker Fuse

Wolfgang Weber <webercardio@...>

Happy eastern,
my dessalator  Duo watermaker works well on  generator 220 V for hours, but stops working on 24 V after 1 h by breaking  of the fuse. I measured the  current - 30 Amp.
Dessalator  recommended  to change to a 40 or 50 Amp. fuse and say that Amel  used 30 Amp. fuse.
Did someone had the same problem and changed the fuse?

Thank you

Bill,

Thank you very much!  I actually ordered a couple of new fittings from Garhauer just over a week ago. But, There is no guarantee that they will work. If they do not, I will give your suggestion a shot.  How competitive is the pricing?  I guess it would be decent considering the fall of the Euro right now.

Re: Shopping for a Maramu

Thank you, Sir! I am paying attention.

With respect to Surveyors, is there anyone who is particularly recommended in the Caribbean?

Mike

Re: Shopping for a Maramu

sbmesasailor

Mike and Rebecca,

Another reason to find a surveyor who knows Amels well is (as you will hear on this site repeatedly) you need to question and thoroughly investigate any changes made to the boat especially to the electronics, bonding, and rigging.  Some of Henri's designs were contrary to contemporary thinking but have been proven by the test of time.

One concern I had when we bought our Maramu was the purchase of the main sheet.  There was only a single block on the boom and that was the point at which the boom broke from fatigue (it did not occur as a result of an uncontrolled jibe).  Our new boom has three three blocks to distribute the load.  We also installed a Boomkicker (http://www.boomkicker.com/) to eliminate the inconvenience of the topping lift -love it.

Make sure the rudder has not been sealed by some clueless yard worker.  If the rudder doesn't "drain", you'll need to correct that.

Don't worry if the boat lists to port.  Fill the fuel tank and it will level out.  If there isn't a full complement of chain in the chain locker and an "oversized" anchor on the bow, the stern will squat a bit -not an issue other than inadequate ground tackle.

The faux teak deck will begin cracking in older boats exposed to years of tropical sun.  This can be corrected in several effective ways but none of them inexpensive.

Good hunting.
