Please do. My Maramu is hull #253, 1988, acquired in 2013.  I have started changing some electronics, added solar panels, etc. but I foresee a lot more work on electrics.
A professional marine electrician is coming on board next week and he will have a lot to say. Your experience will be helpful. Thanks.

Hi Gabriele,

Oops forgot this information:-

Our boat is a Maramu 1980 #75

We have been upgrading her for the last 3 years - all electrics and electronics are now new - we wanted to keep the original rotary drive but have a new computer system , we had some issues marrying the two systems but in the end succeeded - I will post our experience if any interest from fellow older Amel owners.

Hi Bill,

Well it is definitely not caused by 1 or 3.

I haven't been to the boat for 2 yrs now - though systems were being checked while I was away.

Paul purchased the boat 3 yrs ago in Australia (Brisbane)

You may recall we just had so many problems and Paul lost interest - new Cdrive - new motor (only 8 hrs on it in 2 yrs).

We had the bowthruster serviced just prior to leaving Mooloolaba for Gold Coast 2 yrs ago and it hasn't been anywhere since.

I am trying once again to get it together!!!

Will check every point you have raised tomorrow morning.

Thank you again.

Barb

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow Thruster

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Barb,

The linear actuator (small motor) that raises and lowers the bow thruster and the coorespondsing sensors and control box have been replaced in a Super Maramu by Andrew Lamb SM #472 of this group. He provided some good information in a conversation thread. Dr Lamb's SM is a late model, but I think that the linear actuator, the sensors, and the control box are the same for old and new. Try searching Conversations for linear actuator.

I have not had a response from sav"at"amel.fr to recent emails. Sometimes this is due to vacations.

If the large electric motor is rusty, there has been salt water blowing past the seals. Generally there are three possible reasons. They are:
1.) Sailing or motoring with the bow thruster down
2.) Bow thruster needs to be serviced with tube seal and foam donut seals replaced.
3.) Sailing without securing the bow thruster UP with the locking pin

Open the bilge outside the forward head. It probably has significant water there. Remember water tight bulkheads...you will need to pump this into the shower to drain it. All the water that blew past the bow thruster seals will be there. A wet/dry shop vacuum works well for this and if you don't have one, buy one, as you will find many other uses.

If the bow thruster motor is rusty, its service has been neglected and it is very possible that you will find the tube stuck to the motor. There is a photo of special tool designed by Amel that can be used to separate the tube and motor. You will find a photo in the photo section when you search for thruster. It looks like a stainless steel square split in half with a hole in the center. Show this to your mechanic along with bow thruster service instructions that you downloaded from the files section.

When you get through this, you will really appreciate the Amel bow thruster. WARNING: Never allow any line near it when it is operating. It is designed for the propeller to break away rather than ruin the mechanical parts. Propellers are hard to find. Do you have a spare?

When did you buy this Amel and where was it?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Sharki bow thruster

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Rosario,

Welcome to the group.

I believe that if your bow thruster was installed by Amel at the time it was built, it will be very much like, if not identical to early Super Maramus. I think that I am correct that late model Sharkis had Amel Bow Thrusters.

The rest off my email assumes that your Sharki has an Amel made bow thruster:

In troubleshooting the bow thruster, start with the simple things first. Before you go through the list below, have you released the mechanical safety pin that holds the bow thruster UP?

The following list increases in difficulty as you check each item, and is designed to be performed in sequence:

1.) What is the condition of your batteries? Have they been load checked and are they in good condition?
2.) There will be two circuit breakers controlling the bow thruster. One for low amp control circuit, one for high amp operations. Can you locate them? Are they each ON?
3.) There is an electronic control box near the bow thruster. Is it getting voltage?
4.) Are the support wire cables and the blocks for the cables free to move? Is there any other mechanical obstruction?
5.) Does the control box receive the electrical command to turn to small motor to lower the bow thruster when the switch at the helm is set to lower?
6.) Does the small up/down motor receive voltage from the control box?
7.) Is the small motor working when it receives voltage?

Where are you located? You should always include your model, hull number, and location. There could be someone close to you.

I hope this helps you.

Hello everyone,

thank you for accepting me in the Group.

My name is Rosario Romano, I am Italian and happy owner of “FINALMENTE’ 1989 Amel Sharki no 173.

I am coming out from 18 months shipyard works for masts repainting, new rigging, new holding tank, new wc and general maintenance.

I have just put the boat back in the water and unfortunately I found the bow thruster stuck in its top position. It is a model Bison of “Propulseur d’etrave Martin”.

Apparently there are no longer spare parts available and the company disappeared. I have written to Amel Med, but the secretary is on holiday. I hope in a answer in two weeks time.

I wonder if some other "Amelien" or "Sharkien" can help with experience, information and whatever you can provide.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow Thruster

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Barb,

The bow thruster is made by Amel. Since the people that you already spoke with did not know that, they are the wrong people to use.

There are a few Aussies and Kiwis that own Amels and may be able to give you some directions. Maybe they will chime in on this post.

I can and will talk you through some troubleshooting via phone. Check timezones I am in Italy. Call the number below, or write me at bill"at"svbebe.com

In the mean time, go to the Files and Photos section of the Yahoo Group for Amel Yacht Owners and download bow thruster information. You can find it in Photos by searching in Photos for the word: thruster. Do the same thing in the Files section.

If you have problems finding things, call me.

Hi,

Does anyone know the make of Bowthruster in my Amel.

It is totally dead - I need replacement motor and retraction arm.

I have taken it to 3 places in Surfers (Qld) Australia and everyone says if I knew the make they may be able to assist.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

Good evening Eric,

Well, my locker is not empty. I empty every time for the pictures!!! And take pictures of the unloading sequence.
I am leaving Friday evening to Grand Bahama, and now I am very busy (provisioning, picking up last spare parts, good bye parties, etc. plus trying to solve a lots of issue that shouldn’t be).
Would that be ok if I take precise pictures on Sunday (once I am in Port Lucaya)?

Just for info: I have never use my Espar heater, but if my memory is correct some on the forum mention he used to have one and there was some issue with it, then had another one. And also I think I read the later Amel use another heater for the same reasons.

Again, if very urgent I will do my best to take the pictures in between everything, but if it can wait Sunday, then better for me.

Hope we see each other again! Heading East (Grand Bahama for at least a month to relax).

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi
Alexandre,I see that your locker
is empty.I am looking to
fabricate a mounting bracket for my espar
heater.If it is not too
inconvenient would you please take a few photos if possible
of the mounting bracket. Also does your bracket
have one or two supporting bars between the horizontal
section and the vertical section? Is the heater sitting
against the wood that it is mounted to or is there a small
space? If there is a space how large is it.Fair

Hi to everyone and
the NIKIMAT- owner,I saw the picture of
the dive-compressor installation by NIKIMAT
and would like
to do the same on my SM#69
.Could you
give me the measurements please?
Mainly the size of the
playwood on which it
is fixed and the lenght of the
rails would
be important for me
because I would like
to prepare it at
home.
Second question: does
anyone
know the size or the type of the coal of the outhaul-
motor?
Thanks for your

Bow Thruster

Barbara Nairne

Good evening Rosario,

First welcome to the group!
I am Swiss, so we are originally neighbors (except I am sailing in north america at the moment: mostly Bahamas, then Caribbean).
Congratulations on your Amel! I visited once a shark and really like it! Just a smaller version of the Maramu.

Since we have a different boat, I unfortunately can’t answer your question… but I had the same problem (except stuck in the down position) and it was the “sensors”.
But again, different boat, my bow thruster was made by Amel… but I wouldn’t be surprised they “got inspired” by the one you have.
May be someone knowledgeable like Olivier or other Sharki owner can answer the question…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hello
everyone,
thank you for
accepting me in the Group.
My name is
Rosario Romano, I am Italian and happy owner of
“FINALMENTE’ 1989 Amel Sharki no 173.
I am coming
out from 18 months shipyard works for masts repainting, new
rigging, new holding tank, new wc and general
maintenance.
I have just
put the boat back in the water and unfortunately I found the
bow thruster stuck in its top position. It is a model Bison
of “Propulseur d’etrave Martin”.
Apparently
there are no longer spare parts available and the company
disappeared. I have written to Amel Med, but the secretary
is on holiday. I hope in a answer in two weeks
time.
I wonder if
some other "Amelien"
or "Sharkien"
can help with experience, information and whatever you can
provide.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] alexandre- espar heater

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Mainly the size of the
playwood on which it
is fixed and the lenght of the
rails would
be important for me
because I would like
to prepare it at
home.
Second question: does
anyone
know the size or the type of the coal of the outhaul-
motor?
Thanks for your
help,

alexandre- espar heater

sailormon <kimberlite@...>

Hi Alexandre,

I see that your locker is empty.

I am looking to fabricate a mounting bracket for my espar heater.

If it is not too inconvenient would you please take a few photos if possible of the mounting bracket.

Also does your bracket have one or two supporting bars between the horizontal section and the vertical section?

Is the heater sitting against the wood that it is mounted to or is there a small space? If there is a space how large is it.

Fair Winds

Eric

Sharki bow thruster

Rosario Romano <rosario.romano50@...>

Installing the Dive Compressor

Leopold Hauer

Hi to everyone and the NIKIMAT- owner,

I saw the picture of the dive-compressor installation by NIKIMAT and would like to do the same on my SM#69 .

Could you give me the measurements please? Mainly the size of the playwood on which it is fixed and the lenght of the rails would be important for me because I would like to prepare it at home.

Second question: does anyone know the size or the type of the coal of the outhaul- motor?

Thanks for your help,

Leo

Found out the boat is running a H6 (not H5 like originally stated) autoprop purchased in 07 Nov, 2014. Chances are something is caught on the prop. Will know more tomorrow morning EST.

Bill,
One more thing.
I am fairly sure that AutoProp is undersized for that engine. At some point that boat was repowered. An AutoProp H6 would be appropriate for a 110hp engine. I have known other SMs to keep the undersized propeller, but do not know their experience positive or negative.

Aha!!!  More evidence that my old Volvo 78 HP with the bigger AutoProp was over propped!  I couldn't get Bruntons to put it in writing, but that's what they told me verbally.

I still have the prop that came on the boat
serial no. AP2735LH
If anyone is interested I'll be happy to sell it for a good price.

Thanks for the update. Our old prop is on the recall list. We are contacting  AB Marine in RI.
On a further note we upgraded the engine to a 100HP Yanmar from 75HP and were advised by Autoprop we had to replace our H6 prop with a larger diameter prop as it would not work with the 100HP. They further stated that the they had advised AMEL of this on numerous occasions and AMEL would not increase the size to accommodate the larger HP engines. When we asked at AMEL they stated that they knew the vessel better than Brutons.  We changed as Yanmar would not warranty the engine without the changed prop.
Haven't done a comparison in props since the change. Maybe one day when we have to repair/rebuild the current prop.

To perhaps bracket the SM hull #'s with potential exposure to this defect,
Aletes, hull #240, laid up in 1999 has Autoprop #AP2665, apparently
manufactured prior to this issue.

Autoprop Issues Recall Brunton's Propellers is initiating a product
recall, as a precautionary measure, based on customer reports and in-house
technical inspection. Their recall letter follows:The recall is necessary
because of a small number of instances where, through lack of maintenance or
poor assembly, blades on early propellers have become loose. Premature wear
to the blade mechanism may, in an exceptional circumstance, result in the
blade working loose. Using the Autoprop under such conditions over long
periods of time may lead to potential breakdown of the locking washer
securing the blade to the hub. This situation will only occur on certain
size Autoprops with a serial number between AP2902 and AP5299, purchased
between 9/9/98 and 1/1/02.

Please check whether your Autoprop falls within this range. The number
appears on the palm of the blade. If it does, contact your local dealer or
the autoprop office in England. We can confirm whether your Autoprop is
affected or not.

As part of our ongoing product development plan, to enhance performance and
ease maintenance, a new blade locking mechanism has been introduced. This
mechanism is now being fitted to all roller bearing style Autoprops.

Brunton's Propellers intends to take the following steps to address this

situation:

1. Modification of the bearing retaining and locking mechanism.

2. Free upgrade to new style locking mechanism for all Autoprop user covered
under our warranty policy.

3. New generation lip seal fitted free of charge with all upgrades.

4. Worldwide support network of dealers and service agents for local
assistance and advice.

We appreciate the difficulty in assessing this situation, particularly if
your yacht is afloat. If your Autoprop does need technical attention related
to this recall, we will endeavour to make arrangements to upgrade it with
minimum disruption to your sailing schedule.

If you would like further clarification, or to talk about how any of the
above points may affect you, please contact our head office on 44(0) 1225
427511, service@..., or your local Autoprop dealer.

Paul,

Is it possible that you are mistaken? I am fairly certain that your boat with the 75hp came with the H5. BeBe #387 (very close to yours and Eric's came with a H6, but BeBe was built with a 100hp Yanmar. I am fairly sure that the 75hp came with a H5.

And, I would think that Amel would know more about the requirements than Bruntons. I am guessing that Bruntons has very little experience with a keel, hull, and propeller shaft design that Amel uses.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] I had a defective prop

To perhaps bracket the SM hull #'s with potential exposure to this defect,
Aletes, hull #240, laid up in 1999 has Autoprop #AP2665, apparently
manufactured prior to this issue.

Here is a letter from Brutons.

Bill,

One more thing.

I am fairly sure that AutoProp is undersized for that engine. At some point
that boat was repowered. An AutoProp H6 would be appropriate for a 110hp
engine. I have known other SMs to keep the undersized propeller, but do not
know their experience positive or negative.
