Re: Isolation Transformer on an AMEL 54
Wolfgang Weber <webercardio@...>
After all discussions I will install a galvanic separation ( electronic, no transformer ) in the ground ( land)wire just behind the connector to the boat.
Is it possible to prevent damage from higher voltage by installing APC Surge Protector ? Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54 #162

Does anybody have experience with an Isolation Transformer on an AMEL 54? Do`s, Dont`s, weight, power, location to install...... Shore power killed a couple of electronic devices in the last couple of years. I am fed up ! Martin Amel 54 CHIARA (#149)

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Weight/displacement
I think we are probably close to 20 tonnes judging by the position of the waterline, which is original, under water for the last 5m towards the stern.
Friends with a 54 told us that on the haulout scale they weighed 26 tonnes and their waterline is submerged from about 5m from the bow..... Alan SV Elyse SM2K

We haven't weight ours properly, but the crane in Gilleleje, Denmark which was for 18 tons could only lift us without diesel, water, beer (!), dinghy outboard etc. Take your stuff aboard now, after a while you will, sort things out and get rid of it. Don't know how much "good-to-have" things we have left behind in garbage bins along the road. But I think it has to be like this, because you don't know how it is to live on a boat with minimal amount of things. And the amount of minimal things changes over the years. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Weight/displacement

We reduced the “useless clutter” to a minimum for the boat. In fact, this was our starting point and we filled 3 large commercial bins when we took delivery of the boat last summer. We continued the clear out this winter and again last month; we removed all electronics and replaced with modern kit. 100’s of feet of worn out rodes, halyards and sheets were also given the hiho.

However, we added a gantry with solar panels and davits… we think we’ll be under 19t when done. She’ll be weighed next time we haul out… We are keeping a small apartment because the GF/Admiral is indeed a “hoarder”. … but she’s cute! What can we say? :-) Jean-Pierre Germain, SY Eleuthera, SM 007

Still in Turkey? I have an opinion supported by various languages defining this “thing” as either a Rube Goldberg in USA A Kleuwmeldinge in Dutch Or a “patente à gosse” in French Canada. I would not even think of such a contraption on any boat. The flying fish would roll over laughing when they saw it!! :-) Cheers, Jean-Pierre Germain SY Eleuthera, SM 007

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Weight/displacement
Thank you all
20 ton loaded sounds to my experience more reasonable, and I agree it's easy to overload. We are currently clearing off all our belongings after have sold our house. We have lived together for almost 30 years and collect fare to many things most of the not necessary at all, now we only save a few things for memory and some useful items for our kids which they could have use for when starting a family. We are currently loading a few (3) pallets with the remaining gears that we think we have use for under an undefined numbers of years aboard our Amel SM, at least half of it for the boat, tools, spare parts, outboard motor, ropes, etc cruising books, old classic books I never had time read, our cloth, guitar, and some household goods, all in all probably close to 1 ton of goods, My first thought was that one pallet would be enough, but now it looks as it will be three full pallets??????. In the worst case I have to throw away some items when loading the boat and find I have brought to much "nice to have" which I today consider need to have. I'm just entering the beginning of the learning curve of living aboard and cruising Regards Paul on S/Y Kerpa

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Weight/displacement
Olivier Beaute
Good evening Paul, the last SMs (2000, from 2005) were weighted 15.3 tons empty (light displacement) which means without water, fuel and optionnal equipments (watermaker, extra batteries and charger, extra sails, extra electronics, extra awnings, etc..). With all these equipments , water, fuel, your safety gear and personnal items, the total weight should not be above 20 tons. Above that, your SM will suffer overloading, which mainly means less speed and changes in the stability. The SM and AMEL 54 are rather light, compared to the HR. This is due to the way their structure is built (cellular construction, stringers and bulkheads bonded to hull and deck). Don't overload your boat with useless equipments (additional fuel tank...) Olivier.

Re: Original Rotary Drive with New Autopilot
jjjk12s@...
Craig,
I expect Andy is referring to the NECO drive from the Maramu so your Raymarine is probably a lot simpler to connect.
Andy,
I have thought about the same change but the NECO is still going so I haven't put anew computer on yet but would really like to connect the Simrad (same as the BandG). I see you seem to being saying the AC12N is the easiest unit to use but is its current capacity enough? Any help you can give with the wiring changes needed on the drive unit would be fantastic!
If don't have a proper understanding but sort of figure the static magnetic field in the motor is produced by a shunt and a series coil. The problem comes with reversing the direction as the current needs to be reversed on the series coil which is in series with the armature. So the motor wiring in the box has to be changed so that when the opposite rotation direction is needed the armature stays the same polarity but the series coil is reversed. This is getting way over my head and I may have got it all wrong.
The other thing I'm not sure about, is that modern computers can activate either clutch or solenoid but some models only do one (maybe bigger ones designed mainly for hydraulic steering systems?). Which one is needed for the NECO or are both?
Any more clarity you can give would be great because I have just got confused and don't have a suitable electrical engineer to help.
Regards John, Maramu #91

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Eumenia Mini 5500 Dishwasher Parts
svsummerlove@...
Hi Leo,
If you go to https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/amelyachtowners/files/EUMENIA/ and download ET_GS 5005_5500.pdf, (Eudora Soba Geschirrspuler 5005/5500), you'll find on Seite 4 and Seite 5 (Tafel 2), "Pos in Tafel" 8 is a Programmt.Eaton M 5500 with ArtikelNr 034015. That's where I found that part number, but I have no idea if that's how it's still identified or listed on their website. It could be that timer is no longer made and the replacement has a different part number. Those same pages also show a different program timer (Programmt. Siemens Mini 5005, with ArtikelNr 034000). What's odd is that the serial number on my dishwasher is 5.384.754, which is higher than any of the serial numbers listed on that pdf. It could be that this pdf is an older one for earlier vintage dishwashers. The part number and info stamped on my program timer is: EC 4692.01 A 01 220/240V 50HZ T.70 6-00-36. Please let me know what they tell you on Monday, but also please don't spend a lot of your own time trying to track this down for me. I've spent a lot of time already and there's no guarantee the part even exists any longer. Many thanks, Steve Constantine s/v Summer Love SMM #340

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Anchor Wash Pump Capacity
Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>
Hi Steve,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
My problem was the PO had removed the anchor wash pump; I knew this when I bought the boat. I tried to procure a pump to no avail. Then as we plan a circumnavigation and my take was to modernize the things which could be done without moving away from the Amel philosophy, it became logical to add a connection to the boat’s fresh water system. Only meant a T fitting and a shut off valve after the union. Works quite well… While I was at it, we ran another fresh water line to the forward part of the port lazarette and fitted a bayonet fitting; fresh water deck wash too :-) BASTA… all done. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Anchor Wash Pump Capacity
svsummerlove@...
Hi Jean-Pierre,
Now that's an excellent idea. It would have the added advantage of washing salt water off the chain too. I'm presuming all that would be required is a check valve into the existing anchor wash system to prevent contamination of the drinking water supply. Is there anything else you included in the conversion, or any potential problems you ran into? Thanks, Steve Constantine s/v Summer Love SMM #340
