The recent, 1989 onward, Amel boats are designed not to need a zinc on the prop. Again, this is by design. Jeff, ask the marina manager if he knows about the Amel  D.C. electrical system. Ask him if he knows it is a full floating/full return system. Ask him if he knows that the entire driveline is isolated from everything else electrical when it is not in use. He is unfamiliar and bound to lead you astray.

 

I harp and preach on this all the time, to my own detriment. Nobody likes to be scolded and most of us do not appreciate being told what to do. When it comes to your Amel, don’t guess. Make sure you are absolutely certain that any change you make, no matter how small, is the right thing to do. There is more than enough wide ranging expertise on this site that we are blessed to be able to rely on. Use it. Be careful. Question change, it is not always your friend.

 

Kent’s boat is a special case. The original owners subjected it to some tribulations which compromised the entire drive line. When Kent paid good money to have the boat repowered, the folks who did it didn’t think much of the electrical isolation system on the original motor so they did not re-install and neglected to make any mention to Kent. Not Kent’s fault, but he sure has paid for it in money and precious time.

 

This kind of thing happens all the time, it is called ’the not invented here syndrome’. If a tradesman doesn’t recognize something or is unfamiliar, it can’t possibly be any good until he changes it back to what HE is familiar with. Again, it happens all the time. I am sure Olivier Beaute can tell you even more stories about Amel boats he has surveyed that were ‘improved’ so poorly that they  more than mildly dangerous. Having sold hundreds of second hand Amel’s, several many times over, I have seen things that make me want to put my head in my hands…

 

Think. Question. Resist advice from people not deeply familiar with your boat. Derick, good for you on getting a silver ref electrode. This is the best way to be sure.

The silver reference electrode I bought can be found at:

Only needed to connect the electrode to my volt meter, put it over the side near the rudder zincs, and then run a long wire ending in an alligator clip  from the volt meter to where I wanted to test on the bonding system.

After Kent had his problem with what appeared to be electrolysis on his propeller shaft, I ordered propeller zincs for my Autoprop.  However, I also wanted a definitive answer to the question, "how much zinc is enough zinc?", so I also ordered a silver reference electrode.  With the reference electrode I was able to determine that one zinc on the rudder was too little (~ -0.500 volts) while two fresh zincs on the rudder was in the ideal ranget (~ -0.900 volts).  I was also able to verify that the bonding system was working equally at all points in the system.  According to the reference electrode manufacturer (and Henri Amel) you can 'overzinc' your boat. Thus I have not put on the Autoprop zinc at this time.

 

The only other zincs that I am using are on the Spurs rope cutter and on the Onan heat exchanger.  These were in place when I made my measurements.

 

FYI I also measured with and without the shore power cable connected.  The power cable dropped the value about 100 millivolts (to ~ -0,800), indicating to me that I should keep the shore power cable disconnected when not in use - at least in that marina.

autoprop zinc

While servicing the autoprop, I noticed that the manufacturer calls for a zinc, located where the plastic end cap is.

Instructions provided by Amel (off the site I believe) show removal of the PLASTIC end cap, with no mention of a zinc.

The marina manager is familiar with autoprops, and says that a zinc is needed there. He's ordering one, so it must fit in. The zince shown looks just like the end cap.

Just a quick update on what I thought was a coolant leak in the hot water heater.

There was none, what looked like a lost of coolant was due to an air pocket in the radiator.

Also I understood that if there was a leak, due to the high pressure of the hot water heater, the water would go to the coolant, versus the coolant to the water.

Note: there is no expansion tank on the Volvo TMD 22 P, it is in fact the metallic radiator.

I left Fort Lauderdale Thursday 18.45, as there would be even less wind the next day, and arrived Friday 13.00
Due to the weak wind had to motor most the time, only sailed for 3 hours.

Mid way, lineary auto pilot failed: showing error: "Drive Stop", switch to rotary which thankfully worked.
Nice remind how important they are especially single handed and motoring.
Haven't had the time to look at it yet, might require a post on the forum...

Also chain counter was going from 1 to 99 (or vice versa) all the time... not sure why.

The day after had a nice treat, saw a 54 coming. Met Jerome the owner, chat, had a tour.
The 54 is absolutely a beautiful vessel!

There are a lot of ways to
troubleshoot. One of the problems with an internal water
heater leak is that it may only leak when the water inside
is very hot.
If you can, take off the two hoses going to the
water heater. You will likely lose coolant when you do this,
so be prepared. Also, I think Amel uses some sort of glue on
these hoses. You probably will have to cut them off. Also,
it is very likely the hoses attach to copper pipe...be
careful not to bend or deform the copper...probably the best
advise is cut the hose. Then using a piece of pipe with an
outside diameter of the inside diameter of the hose, join
the two ends on each end of the pipe and use hose clamps to
secure them.
Run your engine sufficient time to reach
operating temperature and mark the level in the coolant
overflow tank. Continue running long enough to lose some
coolant...the same amount of time you have previously been
losing coolant.
If you lose coolant, there is an issue with the
engine...call those mechanics back.
If you do not lose coolant, shop for a water
heater. Amel used an Isotemp Basic 40 230V in later model
SMs. It is still available, although Isotemp has added a
thermostat mixing valve that may get in the way when
installing. Rather than deal with that, I removed it and
documented the process in the Photos section of this Group.

One suggestion is that Isotemp makes the Basic
40 with two pathways (circuits) for coolant...it does not
cost too much more, and will give you a circuit to plumb
coolant from the Onan to the water heater. A nice feature, I
think. Of course the second isolated coolant circuit could
be used when a leak happens in the first. Check it out...I
think it is about $150 more.

Back in December a mechanic suggested (among a lot of work)
to remove and clean the heat exchanger, etc.

Since they put back, the engine is loosing coolant every
time I use it and they don’t seem to find the leak.

Derick,

The dishwasher is plumbed with cold water only. It has a heating element to heat the water and will draw about 10 amps of 230 volts when heating the water. The dishwasher uses less water than most people will use when washing by hand.

Hi Leo,

Thank you so much for your help on this.

I'm fairly sure it's an Eaton timer.  It is white and the manufacturer's part number is:  EC 4692.01 A 01 220/240V 50HZ T.70 6-00-36.

The dishwasher worked when I left the boat on the hard. When I returned 6 months later,  it would not work. 

It's been a while since I did this trouble shooting, so I may not be completely accurate in my recollection. I'm also not an appliance repair tech, so I was just trying to narrow things down using logic.  I don't know if the timer is the culprit, but this is the sequence of steps I took that made me suspect it could be:

1. When it was turned on and the lid closed, the lamp lit, the water inlet valve operated, water began to fill the tub, the circulation pump did NOT turn on, the water inlet valve closed when the tub water was at operating level, and the heating element turned on.  The circulation pump did not operate at any stage.  

2. Using the schematics (Tafel 7) and timer sequence table (Tafel 8) on Siete 14 and 16 of the Eudora Soba docs, I disconnected circulation pump motor (M1) and confirmed that it operated on 220V 50HZ AC in stand-alone mode. 

3. After reconnecting it, I confirmed the door switch (TS) was operational, power was present at terminals A3 and A12 (i.e both sides of the winding for the circulation pump M1), and the capacitor on M1 was not shorted or open. 

4. I then bridged terminal A3 to A1, thereby bypassing contact "c" on timer switch 1, and circulation pump M1 operated.  I concluded from this there was either an open in the path from A3 to timer switch 1, an open from timer switch 1 contact "c" to terminal A1, or a failure of timer switch 1 to close the path through contact "c". 

Since all 3 of those possibilities are inside the program timer, I suspected that as the defective part.

That said, I'd be elated if they tell me I'm wrong, and there's another available (and hopefully cheaper) part that's at fault.  :-)

Hi Jeff. Your bow thruster is actually a SIDEPOWER drive unit with an Amel designed and manufactured extension and retraction unit. You will have information on the unit in the ‘black’ binders for all the machinery/options. It is serviced and supported by the marine giant IMTRA here in North America. www.imtra.com <http://www.imtra.com> . They have the zincs as will most of the bigger/better shipyards as these units are used quite extensively these days. I replaced mine twice and got them from the guy who serviced the bottom for me, Silvio at P&S Services at Lauderdale Marine Center, who, in my experience is as good as they get for anything related to boat bottom servicing, from his stock. They are not hard to source. Have fun with your AMEL.

I'm currently hauled out, and returned to the boat to finalize plans to launch.

I noticed that there are 2 zincs on the bow thruster propellors. Mine are about 1/3 gone, and I was wondering if any 54 owners have found a source other then Amel to get them. I'm going to see what I can find here in Charleston, but they look like they may be a custom item. I will make sure the screws come out easily so that they can be replaced while in the water, in any case/

Hi Mark. As I mentioned, this unit is not similar to what you have on your SM 53. Counter rotating dual props. Better seals. It is an improvement in every way. No, not able to be retrofitted....

Hi Jeff. Your bow thruster is actually a SIDEPOWER drive unit with an Amel designed and manufactured extension and retraction unit. You will have information on the unit in the ‘black’ binders for all the machinery/options. It is serviced and supported by the marine giant IMTRA here in North America. www.imtra.com <http://www.imtra.com> . They have the zincs as will most of the bigger/better shipyards as these units are used quite extensively these days. I replaced mine twice and got them from the guy who serviced the bottom for me, Silvio at P&S Services at Lauderdale Marine Center, who, in my experience is as good as they get for anything related to boat bottom servicing, from his stock. They are not hard to source. Have fun with your AMEL.
