Good morning Mike,

I couldn’t answer the reason of the black smoke.
But here is the Kubota information as well as some parts number.

Upon startup this spring
after 6 months or so idle, generator started up fine but
within seconds went to BLACK smoke. After shut-down and
checking things, started again, BLACK smoke, and quit. Now
cranks but doesn’t start.  Diesel mechanic after 3 hours
is stumped. Replaced fuel filter and fuel seems to be
getting to the injectors. Glow plugs seem to be working. Oil
tested, comes up clean, thinking internal moving parts OK.
He says its not getting to starting RPM. Ignoring the prior
startup and black smoke, he says either starter bad or there
is load resistance in the system somewhere preventing
reaching starting RPM.  My current theory, which
mechanic is not buying, is that over the winter some fuel
(after the filter) went bad and fouled the injectors. Black
smoke coming from lack of atomization of the fuel and no
start due to blocked injector.  Anyway, being away from the
boat, can anyone give me the Kubota engine model for the
Onan generator circa 1999. We are hull #240. I am thinking
the next step is to replace the injectors when I can
ascertain the exact model number.  Thanks,  Mike Ondra,Aletes

Hi Bill

Shortly after we bought our Amel our course computer failed it would only activate the drive in one direction – unfortunately our model does not have the two auto-pilot option, so we had an 18 hour sail from Marseille to Leucate short-handed without the autopilot. We had it serviced in the UK service centre – they arranged collection and return and as far as I recall we effectively paid for a replacement but as it only required a few component changes they rebated us the difference – process seemed fairly quick and painless.

I probably have too many spares, but, you never know.

In the Pacific I had a  Raymarine drive fail on a 10 day passage, but thanks to the Amel option of a second drive, the failure was solved with the flick of the A/B switch and we did not miss a beat.

As BeBe is crossing the Atlantic in January to complete our circle, I bought a spare course computer, rudder sensor and control head. Yesterday the original Raymarine course computer failed without notice while on a short sail in Malta. The control head read, "NO PILOT." After we anchored, I exhausted troubleshooting and replaced the course computer.

Now, I either need to buy another, or get this one repaired at a Raymarine depot.

  1. Has anyone used a Raymarine repair depot in Europe?
  2. Does anyone have a spare they wish to sell - 400G or S3GT?
  3. Any advice?

Best,

Bill

Super Maramu for Sale

veitm@...

Hi All:

After 5 years, and many happy miles and anchorages we're thinking about selling our Super Maramu, Atman, as we started (can you believe it) two new businesses and are just strapped for time.

This is a model 1999, build 1998 Super Maramu, everything is up to date and working,

Boat is registered in the US, laying presently Exuma, will be in the Chesapeake by mid June (or wherever you'd like it to be if fast enough)

Anybody looking to get into a cruising ready boat, complete with perfect sails, dinghy, motor, life raft, MOM etc. etc.?  Email me please.

Anyone have one of these: http://www.porta-bote.com

I have run into two boats this week with porta-botes. They swear by them. They don’t sink, they fold the size of a surfboard and can be stowed on the rail or cabin top. I took one out for a ride. It was a dry ride with a light chop. It handled really well. Stepping on the floor takes a little getting used to as it flexes but the owners assure me it was very strong. The only complaint was they have to bail it by hand as it doesn’t come with a self bailer. I watch a guy put his boat together in about 4 minutes by himself. Very cool. But, very ugly.

With best regards,

Mark

Re: Hard Dinghy...

Having kids on our Maramu we sometimes travel in calm weather with two dinghies, one is a 3.1 aluminium bottom RIB with 15 hp and the other is an 8ft Walker Bay Dinghy with tubes with a sail kit. We need to lift the big dinghy onto the foredeck with a halyard. The Walker Bay is just light enough for two of us to lift over the guard rail and store upside down on the aft deck but would be very hard if you aren't fit.

If we use the Walker Bay only it can go upside down on the fordeck and sits well with the bow on the anchor winch and scoops air down the fore hatch and keeps shower out. Or it fits ok on the aft deck. It sails quite well with one person, rows very well with one person but is very slow with a little 3hp.

The big dinghy can tow a ski donut with the kids and cover long distances fast. Either way has advantages depending on the sort of cruising but the payload and speed of a RIB is great.

right..thy only generator i have is small honda.  I actually don't have to use it that much as I have solar, shaft alternator that is now working, and i have a fourwinds wind generator that will replace the amp air.

I actually found a cat pump with bronze fittings at sailorman.  It was behind a bunch of stuff hidden for a few years.  They sold it to me for $50.  It is white and i think it is from an older sea recovery unit.

Last year, I needed a dinghy and asked Bill what he had; after his suggestion, I got the AB UL 2.9M and it is still a bit too long to fit lengthwise on the aft cabin…  too much hassle to place it in aft lazarette and may not fit due to deep V design!  So it is skewed with the protruding tubes either side of the mizzen.  Traveler is free.  Weight is 37 KGs.  For short sails, it rides under the solar panel gantry … sans motor.

Lucky break, I also found a new Yammy Enduro 15 HP 2 stroke which weighs 37KGs also.  (goes very well and due to the high torque, 55KG girlfriend can probably water ski behind it..)

Quite dry ride even in rough seas (Big tubes are effective.)

There is a new folding Dinghy avail in UK.  Looks good quality and may fit your needs better.  Google maybe?

Good luck.

Mark & Alex,

AB makes a "NAVIGO" 2.6, 2.9 and 3.19 meter (8'6", 9'6" and 10'6") aluminum dinghy. It is in their catalog. Go to their website and download it. These are great dinghies.

We have the AB NAVIGO 3.19 meter aluminum dinghy. I wish it was the 2.9. Ours will fit upside down on the mizzen deck with the tubes against the starboard rail and at an angle it allows us to pass by on the port side, and the traveler operates fine.

Alexandra,

If this cruising thing works out for us, we will definitely by another dinghy. Ours is a West Marine piece of junk (came with the boat). A couple of questions:

With the dinghy on the coachtop, are you able to move the traveler for the mizzen?

I wasn’t able to find your model on the AB website. Do you have the model name/number?

Does the aluminum floor fold up to allow for stowage in the lazzerette?

With best regards,

Good morning,

I have an AB 2.9 meter semi rigid aluminum floor dinghy with Yamaha Enduro 15 HP (2 cycle).
For the dinghy:
For small trip (with little wave expected) I use the davit.
For longer trip it is on the aft cabin.

Hi Peter... and for those of you wishing to track other members of this covenant,

Had to buy 3 houses for women I dislike (being PC here) before settling on my errant ways…  55 kg is one bonus!  I’d own an Amel 54 otherwise :-)

Here are my registration details.  If you could send me your assigned Callsign and MMSI number, I’ll look for you on HF DSC & AIS when I move towards Madeira/Canaries and Cabo Verde.

SY Eleuthera
Vessel callsign: FQPC
MMSI: 228 057 700

Cheers,

Hello Folks,

Mark

Good morning,

I have an AB 2.9 meter semi rigid aluminum floor dinghy with Yamaha Enduro 15 HP (2 cycle).
For the dinghy:
For small trip (with little wave expected) I use the davit.
For longer trip it is on the aft cabin.
The outboard fit perfectly in the lazaret.

prefered location for storage.

I was wanting to find a n esting dinghy but
haven't found yet.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hard Dinghy...

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Hello Folks,

Good luck.
