Hi Bill,

Does your Victron Energy MPPT have a ground wire connection for the AC side?

Thanks

Alex,

With some modern MPPT controllers series is more efficient. I only had enough room at the top of the EMEK Marine arch for three of the 135 watt panels. They are wired in series producing a maximum of 75 volts to the controller, and my controller takes a maximum of 75 volts.

While at anchor, I run the generator to make water, to heat water, to wash clothes, and to top off the batteries.

Thank yo so much Bill,

So 3 x 135 Watt sola panel is enough !
That sounds great. I thought I would need twice the amount.
So you have regular “flooded” Delco Freedom batteries and they charge fully, this si great.

I thought of the Kyocera as well.
Are they mounted on series or parallel?

A neighbor on a 54 has 4 x 200 Watt mounted in series and obtain 96 Volt which is then convert in 24 volt…
he (try to) explain the lost of energy proportional to the square of the amp, etc. in short gaining 35% by mounting in series, but I have absolutely no clue on that…
So just trying to understand and see working solutions…

Why do you run your genset? To make water, etc. or also to help charging the bateries?

As always thanks for the help!
Sincerely, Alexandre

Alex,
We have 405 watts of solar which will keep the
batteries at 100% during daylight while running freezer,
fridge, fans and a computer or two.  We have a Victron Blue
MPPT controller which has been very good at regulating the
charge during daylight hours. We have 12 standard 110amp
house batteries...freedom model.
I would go with either German or Japanese solar
panels and keep clear of Chinese. There are probably good
panels from China, but I know that there are many poor
quality panels. I think that you get what you pay for. I
chose Kyocera panels from Japan...3 @ 135 watts each with a
MPPT controller up to 75 volts and up to 50 amps. I have the
3 panels wired in a series.
I now run the generator at anchor for about 1
to 1.5 hours every second day.

The IB5124 has two wires rather than 3 wires like your original. To wire
the two wire:
---Cap off the brown wire
---Connect the blue (neg) wire to terminal labeled 2/4
---Connect the black (pos) wire to the terminal marked 1/3

Have you tried rebooting it? On BeBe, 387, it is powered by the toggle switch on the permanent 24-12 volt transformer.

It is likely the sensor as Alan stated. There are great instructions written by Gary Silver in either Files or Photos. There is a US distribution center. Google and you will find it.

Hi Eric,

I bought an IB5124 direct from "ifm efector" in Australia $225 approx.
It's a 2 wire sensor rather than the original Amel supplied 3 wire...its just a matter of connecting the appropriate 2 wires as per Bill's original instruction.

Hi Alan,

I looked through the comments previously. I see another part number listed and it seems to need a special cable.

Is that the unit that you used and where did you purchase it

Which Controller/regulator do you have?
Are the panels mounted in series?

Alexandre, I have three 140 watt Kyrocera
panels and a wind gen. , in six months in the Caribbean we
never had to use the generator to charge our flooded
batteries. The solar provided much more power than the wind
gen. , but the combination normally provides power around
the clock, however quite often the wind gen. provided very
little to no measurable amps. My boat is on a mooring and
the batteries are 100% charged , with a float charge
provided through the regulator. Pat SM 123

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Batteries

Patrick McAneny

Alexandre, I have three 140 watt Kyrocera panels and a wind gen. , in six months in the Caribbean we never had to use the generator to charge our flooded batteries. The solar provided much more power than the wind gen. , but the combination normally provides power around the clock, however quite often the wind gen. provided very little to no measurable amps. My boat is on a mooring and the batteries are 100% charged , with a float charge provided through the regulator. Pat SM 123

Good morning,

Currently I have 8 of the traditional deep cycle flooded batteries, which is ok, since I spend a large amount of time in Marinas because of my work.

Therefore, I might start to spend more time at anchor.
From sailing experience I know the genset doesn’t fully charge the batteries.
So will consider solar panels.
Does anyone have input in this solution?
Also for those using solar panels, did you keep the same flooded batteries or did you change them with AGM, or else?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Just the way we want to redo our upholstery. Really nice! Even if it thought the cost was a bit high. But it looks like you really have got value for the money.

Eric and Stephanie...and others wanted photos, etc. regarding our update of BeBe's salon.

The labor, new foam cushions, and sewing material cost was 3,500 Euro. This excluded the cost of the fabric. The fabric necessary was 14 yards of 54" wide UltraLeather. This 14 yards included using UltraLeather on the backs of the back cushionscushions, which is not necessary. You can buy UltraLeather for about $50 to $150 a yard. Distributors are the cheapest and Retail the highest.

The other reason we wanted new.  Check out the channels on this seat cushion.  This was recovered in Turkey and the seams are all offset and angled.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Insurance quotes

Colin - ex SV Island Pearl

Hi Bob

We have remained with Panteanius as were insured with their UK business whilst the boat was over there, and for the trip around to Australia. I cannot complain about their cruising coverage area around Australia nor their price but I did not shop around nor have any claims yet. I simply transferred my policy to the Australian office when they opened here about two years ago and since I was an existing customer they honoured UK prices which were apparently significantly cheaper than the normal Australian prices (according to them).
