Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] c-drive and double lip seals
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Be careful. Even though double lip sounds like double the sealing, it is not. On a double lip seal only one lip of a double lip is the fluid sealing lip...and grease is required between the lips. The other lip of a double lip seal is to keep solid contaminants out of the sealed area. Don't try to reinvent what Amel has done...if you do, chances are that you may regret it. Best, Bill BeBe 387

The 45x65x8 lip seal for the wear bushing from Amel with a stainless steel spring is 6 euro, which would be about $6.75USD. If you are ordering anything from Amel, order these and since they weigh almost nothing they will deliver free. Best, Bill BeBe 387

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] c-drive seal price
Eric,
Good point. I checked into this and indeed the ones we have been using do not have the stainless springs. That being said, they have worked flawlessly for the past 8 years without leaking between changes. I did check with Motion Industries. SKF does make 45x65x8 seals with stainless garter springs selling for $14.26. Also double lip configuration for $15.69 (interesting). As I had mentioned before, the carbon steel spring version is $6.35 by comparison. Google on SKF HMS5 lipseal to learn more than you need to know. Mike From: amelyachtowners@... Pat: Amel did not install the w/maker. Owner installed a 12v Katadyn and I would prefer a 4' commercial membrane which is the standard available worldwide. There is no generator. If your unit requires 220v for the pressure pump then our setup is not a good fit. Thank you /Reid

Yes, you are correct, I made a typo. The water pump I need is 0132-0277. The part prices are out of date on the website. Current prices are 429.69 for the pump. Pump will be overnight-ed and the current rebuild kit I have will be used on the old pump if I can figure it out or as spare parts.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] fresh water lines
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
OK, John. I have not been on board a SM as early as yours...things changed through the model years. Facing the dining table the A/C is under the left rear corner seat. And since we have the 2 freezer option, we have a freezer under each side outside seat cushions. Good luck, but look for water in every compartment between the bulkhead on the aft side of the forward head to the bulkhead for the engine room...open up everything. You might try a trick I used once to find a hidden leak. Disconnect the output line of the water pump and shoot some compressed air (not too much pressure) into the line while someone with good ears listens for escaping air in the salon area. There will initially be some water escaping because there will be water in the line. Bill BeBe 387 Gibraltar for 2 weeks, then Canary Islands Bill

Thank you Bill for your immediate response, which suggested to me that I am most likely looking for the where the hose connects to the copper line going to the aft shower as the source of the leak. The forward bench of the salon table contains the AC unit whereas the aft bench has a freezer. The corner plywood seat is screwed down but I will attempt to remove it as see what's there later today. Thanks again for your help all the way from Gibraltar!

Bill, Check your pump number again. I think it is 0132-0277. If so, a google search shows that pump available for $368 and the 0132-0281 repair kit available for $204: http://www.dieselpartusa.com/onanpartslist.php?start=17681&PHPSESSID=0567fee111982260e70c4f0e38afee5a There may be other sources...I just checked the first one. The pump I have is part 123-0277, the "overhaul" kit was part 0132-0281. included are some pictures (Check photos). The problem is the schematic I have (provided by onan) which is the worst representation of what I have pulled out. I know I have read some things about replacement pumps made by various aftermarket distributors. Can anyone chime in on this? Might be forced to rebuild and order the $600.00 replacement form Onan.

The previous owner installed it so that when it leaked, which it did, it did so on the motor. The issue would be how large a unit we could fit. We need new membranes etc in any case.
Currently we are on the hard in Indiantown Marina Florida returning to it this fall for winter cruising.

I replaced my watermaker a few years ago and have my old one in my basement . I do not need it and I am willing to give it to someone that does. I am looking for someone that does not want it because its free , but needs it and can use it. It was never used by me as I was in fresh water , but I have no reason to believe it would not be in good condition, the only thing that it needs is a new glass vial that measures water flow, it broke from freezing . It is a 60L 220V., includes the panel showing about 240 hrs., membranes ( would need replacing) large Lesson motor connected via fan belt to high pressure pump , hoses , filter , complete system. I would be willing to ship it (at your cost, very heavy so costly) anywhere, USA. or could be picked up on the Sassafras River 40 miles north of Annapolis or few miles from the C&D canal for those heading south from New England.

We have the same: http://nikimat.com/water_maker_duo_d60.html I speak French, but from memory the owner manual didn’t say much. I am very new at using my water maker, had it completely serviced earlier this year since it had not been used since I purchase my vessel in 2012. I had put: new membrane, new high pressure switch. I wanted to change the high pressure hose, but service person said they were still good, which was a mistake as one blew up not too long ago and luckily only damaged my inverter… Hopefully you can get additional feed back from others. If you don’t know when your water maker was last used, at least change the membrane and the high pressure hoses. To operate it, it is easy (just used it for 5 hours 2 days ago crossing to Nassau) Prior to using: make sure the through hull valve is open, the filter is clean, etc. in 24 volt mode: turn the switch to the left (24 Volt) At first you will see an orange light. The water maker will be discarding bad water to the same hose as the bilge pump. After a little while the green light will appear. Make sure to adjust the knob to remain in the green arc. The little bubble will show you how many litters per hour you are making. From the little faucet you can use a PPM meter and see how many particule you have. With a new membrane I have 10… I forgot at what number you should be changing the Membrane (I am sure Bill or someone will give the number). in 220 Volt mode: Note: this is 220 Volt 50 Hz. So depending where you are located, make sure it is 50 HZ. The US, Bahamas, etc. provide 60 HZ so you would have to run your generator in order to get 50 HZ. Turn swtich to the right (220 Volt) and the same as above. I monitor with the water floating stick that I am making water. On my side I preferred to hire a professional to check the high pressure switch and the quality sensor. Don’t forget to change the high pressure hoses if you don’t know the last time they were changed. A failure of these can cost you several thousands of dollars in damages… many people lost their batteries charger… You should use it, at least once a week for a few minutes (to keep the membrane wet). If you are in a marina, you can “rinse” it. There is a valve before the filter that you can move. Now, instead of sea water it receive fresh water from your tank. BUT, you can not use water with chlorine, otherwise will destroy the membrane. Personally I have install a charbon filter to remove the chlorine when I flush it. Hope that helps, sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Atlantis Marina, Nassau, Bahamas. -------------------------------------------- On Mon, 9/28/15, osterberg.paul.l@... Eric, Do you own a Amel ? If so what model and power source is your watermaker ? I want to give it someone that needs it or could use it for parts .There was a few different models and they are not interchangeable as to parts. Being in Annapolis is good, as I don't need the hassle of shipping.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Free watermaker

Vladimir, This watermaker would have no parts that you could use on your new Amel. The price you were quoted was indeed a rip off. The seals should not be much more than $10 and perhaps less.

Are they made by the same manufacturer? It it is so then some parts are similar. Carolina Seals offered me a seal for C-drive prop shaft for $55.00 each. I believe that this is a ripoff. How much did you pay for those seals?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] fresh water lines
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
John, I cannot be much help because I have never done any water line plumbing on an Amel. On SM 387, there is a pair of copper water lines that are behind the back cushion on the dining table seating. If you are facing the dining table, remove the back cushion on the right side...you should see the lines that go to the shower control. Do you have a freezer under that seat cushion? Or, is it an open compartment? On SM 387, the seats and backs are secured by Velcro and the seat plywood panel under the cushion and over the A/C is removable. The water is going to migrate to all of the floor compartments in the saloon area and because your boat has watertight bulkheads, you are going to have to open all of these compartments between the engine room bulkhead and the bulkhead on the aft side of the forward head. You will need a pump to pump out the water and probably a wet/vac to complete the drying out. I wish I could help you more, but that exhausted what I can tell you. I also have the rebuild kit, but have never rebuilt the pump. I believe the kit includes a bearing, a mechanical seal and a few other pieces.
