Hi Bill I had that problem in Colon at the shelter bay marina. I decided to replace the bearings as preventive maintenance prior to the big pacific crossing. After I had spent ages trying I asked the boat yard to use a gas torch to heat the unit to loosen the shaft. Instead they sent a big man with a big puller and a big hammer. Result shattered gearbox casing and the shaft still stuck. Then they brought the gas torch and five minutes later the shaft was out. Lesson beware big man with heavy tools. Heating with a gas torch quickly releases the shaft.  As to the future greasing of the shaft...essential to prevent future problems, draw it periodically and grease it. I have found lanacote lasts best.

Hi everyone -

I have a new project on hands and I have seen the posts regarding the outhaul overhaul. All these post have been extremely helpful. Just wondering if anyone else can chime in on the methods they have used to pull the shaft from the transmission before I purchase a bearing puller or other device to help. I have a pretty good spread of tools/equipment on board including a few thing that might help. 

Thus far I have removed the furling motor which was tested and proved to not be the problem. Transmission (current) needs an overhaul and I have two spares to put on in the meantime however, getting the shaft to free has been an issue. I have used PB blaster overnight and I am currently thinking up a devise that I can set up to "press" the shaft through. 

Creative ideas are welcome.

Are you sure that you want a more "efficient" fridge????
  1. A water cooled fridge will get clogged with marine life and fail
  2. A water cooled fridge cannot be operated when out f the water.
  3. One more pump to overhaul.
How much will that efficiency really cost you????

I do not believe there is a breaker for the bow thruster, There might be a Gigondo fuse somewhere but I doubt it.

I asked Jacques Carteau, Amel’s retired technical manager and one time Chairman, how he could possibly allow there to be no circuit protection on the bow thruster way back when they became standard fitment. I was quite pointed in my objection which annoyed him greatly. Bill,
     From the many postings over the years, it seems that I was very lucky and a small bearing puller did it relatively easily ( there was some hammering). Somewhere in the archives, you will find a posting were the boom had to be taken to a machine shop.
The learning from all of this, has to be to regularly grease the stainless shaft in the Anderson winch on the boom.
Many of us have also added grease points to the transmission case, but it is a case of a little rather than a lot when servicing.

I hit 'send' before I was finished with my message.  But you get the drift. The Amel forum is the single most incredibly useful vehicle for communications among Amel owners yet it sits on an archaic platform that makes it far more difficult (and frustrating) to navigate than necessary.  For one, why can't one simply link to a photo in the archives rather than having to leave "conversations" and navigate into the bowels of the "photos" library to find a photo and then navigate all the way back to the original message? 

I don't have the solution; I'm just throwing the idea of transitioning over to a more contemporary platform only in the context of the implications of changes at Yahoo for the Amel forum archives.  It could be an opportunity to make it easier to access the wealth of knowledge and experience that resides therein...

I download and tried the yahoo forum offline tool - http://www.personalgroupware.com/index.htm - The trial version fairly quickly downloaded 4000 or so messages - I will try and leave it running and download the rest in the next day or so - the file and photos download didn't seem to work though. If that can be made to work then it would seem an ideal offline tool to have a local copy of the forum messages and would be very useful when away from Internet access. The filter in the tank is similar to the screens in the shower drains.

That is all I can think of. Can you get the engine up to 3000 rpm with the transmission in neutral?

You could also have clogged injectors.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the info.  I was unaware of such a filter at the fuel valve.  So to check and service it I am assuming you have to empty the fuel tank.  Is the filter a coarse screen?  Anyone else have this clog?

 

Regarding props.  I am sure the Autoprop and Maxprop are excellent but let me throw in another possibility. Our Super Maramu (100 HP Yanmar) has a German Variprop "Blue Water" 4-Blade prop and IMHO it is excellent. Lots of power, lots of speed and zero vibration.  It seems to be a very good match for the SM.  Works well at low to high rpms and in reverse, setting the anchor I have to be careful to make sure the chain does't jump the windlass. In forward it can really punch through chop or hit speed and seems to like to motorsail as well.   It is easy to remove from the shaft and the nut is held in place by torque and then 3 set screws. The factory is extremely responsive and helpful.  When I talked to them by phone they knew my boat and the German owner who had bought the prop.  They will have exactly the specs for a Super Maramu.

 

Again, I cannot compare it to the other props (my Santorin had the fixed 3 blade) but it might be worth a look if you are in the market for a replacement prop.

We have the same motor and this is exactly what happens immediately when the prop and hull needs cleaning, ie engine revs decrease. I now dive and clean the prop in between replacing the bottom paint, at least 3 x per annum. Amazing how the engine and boat speed pick up automatically with a few hours spent with scuba gear under the boat. These engines tend to run cool so that is normal.

We really like the Yanmar 75 / Amel 53 combination. You have a great engine there which pushes the boat along nicely with well under 3.5l/hr fuel usage at 6.3 - 7kts day in day out based on our trip from Canary Islands to Australia where we did 1000 hours of motoring being a delivery trip with many days of no wind in the Pacific and Atlantic.

I had a problem with the engine slowing down. There is a plastic filter INSIDE the fuel tank at the valve at the bottom. . At one point the engine actually stopped. I took an air horn and put the bell of it over the rubber part of the fuel line and it blew the silicone off of the filter I removed this filter and found it clogged with blue silicone. You need a very thin wrench- we used to call it a tappet wrench- to take apart the fuel valve.

 

My first guess is that your prop needs a rebuild.

If you are in the USA you can get what you need from AB marine and they will rent you the 2 special tools needed for the job. It is not a difficult job just time consuming.

I bought my SM in Feb 2015  and there are still many systems I need to better understand.  Most perplexing is I have seen declining engine RPMs since original survey.  Originally boat produced about 3100 RPMs (Yanmar manual says 3600/3800 tops - but I do know Autoprop may limit that number)  but has since declined to 1800.  Not sure why as engine seems to run fine - easy start, no smoke, no roughness at any RPM.  Racor and engine filters are new.  Manual shut off valve in passageway  is wide open (it actually will not shut off motor... but that's another issue).   I do have an Autoprop which was serviced well over a year ago - but not sure - by previous owner. Only other engine oddity as it runs very cold - never over 130F.   Boat has been in the water now for a little over a year with not much motor use.  Any and all suggestions would be welcome.

I have a Yanmar 75 on my Jeanneau 43 (I follow the Amel list in the hope of one day buying one), and I had this same problem when I first bought the boat.  I have a fixed prop, but the problem turned out to be a clogged fuel pickup tube.  The boat had not been used very much when I bought it (100 hrs at 3 years old), and the dealer who sold the boat to me eventually found that the pickup tube was full of plastic shavings.  Likely left behind when the plastic fuel tank had the fitting installed originally.

You have checked all the obvious source of blockage, and if you find that your prop is not too fouled, then I would recommend pulling the fuel pickup tube.  Some boats have a rubber hose and a screen installed on these pickups (for regulatory reasons), and the screens are known to accumulate debris.

Seems auto prop is most likely ... And easiest to fix

We faced the same thought process you are going through. The first thing we could not find a unit that fit in the same opening without serious modifications to the cabinetry. We had the freezer box removed and replaced it with a large cooling pale that fits on the back wall and is curved to fit on one side. This has proved quite satisfactory and is double in size to the freezer box. We can send a picture of the modification if required.

Hello!
I have two questions:
- I like to remove the front opening refrigerator on our SM#259 from 1999 to clean out behind it and clean around the compressor, but I can't find whats securing it, doe's anyone know how to pull it out?
- I think of changing the compressor to a water cooled unit and also the evaporator to save energy and reduce the sound from the fan, does it make sense to do that? I hesitate to buy the new units with drawer as they are very expensive.

Thermostat seems likely as it appears to have  been previously removed.

For the RPM - something super simple to check first - have you disconnected the throttle cable and checked the revs by directly operating the lever on the fuel pump? Without any other symptoms maybe your throttle cable has gradually become badly adjusted.

The cold running might be due to someone having removed the thermostat or the thermostat not working,
