Re: Changes to Yahoo
Hi Alain,
The moderators fundamentally have the right to mess with other peoples' messages. In a good way :) It would be important to keep messages in their correct or appropriate categories so moderators can move them between subjects. The same with pictures and files. You would have the ability to hide or delete offensive material and send the user a warning. You would be be to take two or more similar discussion topics and merge them into one for ease of search and likewise if a discussion takes a turn toward a different subject you can split out those posts and create a new topic. Answering questions, maybe (although in this group I'd never ever expect to) handling a complaint, and deleting any spam. You can also "lock" topics; meaning no else can add to it until it's unlocked. This will be useful if we have, for instance, a reference topic with a list if part numbers or sources or the like and we need it to not get lost in a discussion. It would only be updated with your consent to keep it clean and relevant. You can "sticky" a topic, meaning it will always be presented at the top of the topics list, no matter how many additional messages might show up. A 'stickied' message might contain all the links we need to point to important resources like bow thruster maintenance instructions, Polars, places to get maintenance performed that are familiar with Amels and other data we don;t want to get buried. You can also set up and handle any Polls (surveys) based on the group's requests. I'm probably leaving stuff out, but I also need to say that until the board gets up and running full time there will be very little to do except practice. I'll try to help facilitate that. Once we get a hundred or so people using the board there will be stuff to do and if we have a thousand people it will take enough time that we should bring in two more moderators. All along, the need to grow topics, expand and refine categories and rearrange the structure is easily handled without losing any data. Let me know what you think. Gary W. SM 209, "Adagio" BVI

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Changes to Yahoo
Hi Ian and Judy,
The Amelowners BBS is an all new system, completely independent from Yahoo groups. As such it requires a registration process which means basically signing up all over again. When you go to the amelowners.net page, click on "Register" and create your user name and password. It will ask you for your email at that time. The board itself sends you an email just to confirm you're a real human instead of an automatic hacking machine (called a 'bot") and you should be able to click on the link within the email and validate your registration. Once the account is valid you can log on and off at will. You can also complete the "Profile" sections and include as much information about you, your boat, your travels and your interests as you might wish to publicly share. Hope that helps. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SSB Grounding
Problem with my installation:
The ground cable behind the chart table is now disconnected. I checked that the ca 8 mm thick had contact with the copper strip in the aft lazaret, so that's fine, BUT it was also connected to the grund strap in the BILGE, Where do I find the connection between the copper strip in the aft lazaret and the ground strap in the bilge? Then all ground connection behind the chart table was to the thick ground cable from the aft copper strap, they are not connected to the ground strap in the Bilge. Any one that can give me some light on this? Paul S/Y Kerpa SM #259

Re: Vinyl overhead covering
jjjk12s@...
Jeff,
I would recommend 3M autotrim spray adhesive as an alternative to sikaflex on the basis it is much less messy to work with and in my experince has been fine.
I've redone all my headliner twice. argghhh Both times with 3M spray adhesive but the first time with locally sourced vinyl. That gave up after a year in the tropics. The second time I used Naugahyde brand vinyl with non-migrating plasticisers. The problem with vinyl coming down is not just about the glue. The problem in hot weather is also the plasticisers in the vinyl migrating into the glue to turn it into a gooey mess. Naugahyde with 3M has been great for the past two years with my boat based in a hot and humid place with the deck often too hot to walk on in bare feet.
A previous owner of my boat did partial vinyl repairs with sikaflex and it was a total pain to remove.
My only caveat would be whether the original vinyl has fully non migratory plasticisers, which may be Phil's experience.

Not much chance to get anything done until yesterday but I was able to make some additions. For your review: All messages from the Yahoo board have been captured through yesterday. I can do that at will and append the document now. I uploaded and made available all these messages in both .pdf and .html. You can download them and own the entire Yahoo group dialogue from day one. It is an immense document and searching it takes a long time on a slow machine. I think the web document (.html) is faster. Someday, when someone has a week with nothing to do, it would be nice to trim out about 900,000 words of spurious html markup from all these messages. I think the finished document would be quite manageable then. Not sure I'm up for that quite yet though. Per the suggestions made here, I added numerous message boards and photo gallery categories and subs. I did not go into the granularity that I could have because the bbs software is not exactly simple a filing system. The way it'll work is that is, for instance: Someone comes up with a solid service schedule and posts it under that category. A moderator will format it and lock that message making it a 'sticky' note that will always be at the top of any other messages. If it needs to be updated, the moderator just unlocks it and the original poster or the moderator can update it. Then it gets re-stick-ified so it always remains first on a search and first on the message list for that topic. The photo organization will need conventions: any time you post a message and include photos the decision needs to be made whether or not that photo is just incidental to your message (i.e. this is us sailing along with the dolphins) or if it is substantial to the group (i.e. here is the information plate from my Leroy Somer Outhaul Motor). As I mentioned, there are several levels of the Photo Gallery already so pictures can be sent to the appropriate topic (and new ones made at any time). In addition, individual members in good standing can create their own galleries and just share them to other board members. Overall, I think the availability of photos and documents will be better and easier to organize than in the the Yahoo group, but until we actually get some content going it's impossible to really see it. I really like the idea of a naming convention and I think the exhaustive description of the suggested 'directories and sub directories' could be integrated in the file naming conventions. I will come up with some arbitrary conventions to start with and they can evolve from there. Ultimately there is no way to enforce naming conventions prior to upload so it will will be incumbent upon the membership to try and make it easy on the rest of us. I created separate categories for each model boat (again). The beauty of a beta :) I like the idea that the format will be the same regardless of which model you own or are doing research on. Specs, sailing notes, checklists, parts sourcing and the whole spectrum of needed information should be organized identically for each model. Having said that, I have not created the sub-boards for any models except Super Maramu/Super Maramu 2000 because it's a bit of a time sink to do so and I await feedback from the group on what is currently available. If you have a chance, please have a look at the changes and see what you think. I could be ready to turn it on any time really. I'll just need to make a 'last pull' of the existing messages and make them available. Thanks again for the suggestions and support. Now, who is the current moderator of the Yahoo board? and .. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Changes to Yahoo
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Hi Gary, As something of a dinosaur in the tech world I am only just catching up on this. I tried to log onto www.amelowners.net but I need an activation email and user name and password. Can you tell me how to get these ? Thanks for all your efforts, by the way.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Changes to Yahoo Greetings :) Been a busy week for us as we had guests aboard and we playing tourist guide through the BVIs. Not much chance to get anything done until yesterday but I was able to make some additions.
For your review:
All messages from the Yahoo board have been captured through yesterday. I can do that at will and append the document now.
I uploaded and made available all these messages in both .pdf and .html. You can download them and own the entire Yahoo group dialogue from day one. It is an immense document and searching it takes a long time on a slow machine. I think the web document
(.html) is faster. Someday, when someone has a week with nothing to do, it would be nice to trim out about 900,000 words of spurious html markup from all these messages. I think the finished document would be quite manageable then. Not sure I'm up for that
quite yet though.
Per the suggestions made here, I added numerous message boards and photo gallery categories and subs. I did not go into the granularity that I could have because the bbs software is not exactly simple a filing system. The way it'll work is that is, for
instance: Someone comes up with a solid service schedule and posts it under that category. A moderator will format it and lock that message making it a 'sticky' note that will always be at the top of any other messages. If it needs to be updated, the moderator
just unlocks it and the original poster or the moderator can update it. Then it gets re-stick-ified so it always remains first on a search and first on the message list for that topic.
The photo organization will need conventions: any time you post a message and include photos the decision needs to be made whether or not that photo is just incidental to your message (i.e. this is us sailing along with the dolphins) or if it is substantial
to the group (i.e. here is the information plate from my Leroy Somer Outhaul Motor).
As I mentioned, there are several levels of the Photo Gallery already so pictures can be sent to the appropriate topic (and new ones made at any time). In addition, individual members in good standing can create their own galleries and just share them
to other board members.
I will come up with some arbitrary conventions to start with and
they can evolve from there.
Specs, sailing notes, checklists, parts sourcing and the whole
spectrum of needed information should be organized identically for each model.
Now, who is the current moderator of the Yahoo board?
and .. I need a couple of volunteers to try their hand at the role of moderator :)

Re: Vinyl overhead covering
phil.berghmans <no_reply@...>
hi jeff,
In my eyes and experience their is one product that will do the job. Sikaflex, 5200 or i used polyurethane adhesive . all the other (expensive adhesives will not hold over time. don't buy the expensive sprays adhesives off 3M ,i spend over 300euros and after 2 months everything came down again. very frustrating i can tell you I did it with polyurethane in 2009 in Las palmas and the boot has been in the tropics since and everything still perfect. The polyurethane tubes were 5 euros a piece. The reason why sika or simular products hold is that they are flexible, in the day the deck can be more then 50°c in the night it cools down to maybe 20°C a non flexible glue doesn't hold this. You have different materials headlining ,glue, polyester, wood balsa they all work different so I am very happy with what we did (messy job btw) good luck phil miles ahead santorin 101 ps i can tell you how we did it iff you like

Odd Onan starting problem
When we bought our SM we had problem to start our Onan genset. It fires and start but died right away, I noticed that the "trotel/gas" solenoid did not hold the "trotel". By holding the trotel by force it worked alright, but something was wrong. I asked the mechanics to look at it, but each time they where at the boat it fires up with no problem. After i while the problem occurred more seldom, and after a few month it "correct" it self and it has worked without problem for month now. since a while I found out that if i try to start the onan from the starter nob on the genset and not use the starter in the galley I have the same problem, it fires but the solenoid can't hold the trotel/gas, but it start without any problem from the galley. Any one who can put some light on what the problem could be? Paul on S/Y Kerpa SM#259

Ann-Sofie Svanberg <kanalmamman@...>
Yes there is a surge, but in winter time northerly isn't that common. Also if you moore your boat very thouroughly and thight and use big springs it is not a problem. The surge is not life threatning as it can be in other places. Skickat från min iPad

Re: 24 volt charger on Yanmar quit working causing DC panel light to indicate fault
svperegrinus@yahoo.com
On SM2K Nr.350 (2002), the 24v alternator is a Leece-Neville 8SC3009ZA, 175 A.
Amel originally installed it with internal regulation. Since we wanted to switch to Trojan AGM batteries which would be fried by the non-adjustable internal regulator, we modified the alternator for external regulation by a Mastervolt Alpha Pro external regulator/charger. Vinyl overhead covering

In several places, the vinyl covering on the overhead is not adhering to the structure. Has anyone found an effective adhesive to repair/correct this condition?

Re: Curacao
rossirossix4
Hi Will,
Please don't take this as criticism but it would be helpful if you would also post your comments on Noonsite. When I looked there the only thing I could find was "Break-ins and thefts have been reported twice to Noonsite (2008 and 2012) from cruisers who have left their boats on the hard at Curacao Marine. Be sure, if leaving your boat for a period of time, to secure all items of value below decks and revisit the locking/security system on hatches and doors" . Your post on this group indicates 17 break ins last year! When I saw your post about the many problems you had with the marina, I emailed a trusted friend who has lived aboard in Curacao for at least 15 years. He told me things that I will not post on this group because technically these comments are heresay. Yet there is nothing posted on Noonsite which is a place most yachters go to get the scoop on places they visit. Bob KAIMI

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] winter marinas in Greece
pepinoamel <no_reply@...>
Hi Attilio & Ann-Sofie, Attilio thanks for the info regarding Rhodes marina. I'll just wait till they install that breakwater and maybe it's an option then for winter. Ann-Sofie thanks for the info regarding Agios Nicholaos. We have friends that have stayed there many times and we agree it's a beautiful place with a nice town but it seems to have a problem with a bad surge in strong northerlies. We have been away for the last ten days and had no access to the internet, hence the late reply. Many thanks. Gerhard Hoffmann SM381 Pepino Evia, Greece

Amel 54 - engine room overheating problems
Tony Robinson <tonywrobinson51@...>
I am convinced that the port side of the engine room on my Amel 54 is under ventilated. The 100 amp Dolphin charger has now failed twice due to overheating problems, and one of the pulleys on the high pressure watermaker pump directly underneath has also failed for the same reason. I'm thinking of fitting a fan to the end of the ducting that comes down from the deck at the forward portside of the engine room to pull in more air. My boat is in Greece so I don't have access to it right now. Could someone tell me the width of the ducting I refer to above ? From memory it is about 5 inches wide (120mm ?) but if someone could confirm this I would be very grateful. Also, does anyone have any comments re this idea ? Thank you all in advance. Regards, Tony Robinson - Catriona R, Amel 54 # 102
