Peter,

The main engine has a floating ground.

That means the negative side of the battery bank is not normally connected
to the engine block.

I believe what you are referring is the engine start relay.

This connects the negative side of the battery bank to the engine block
which will allow your engine to start. This disengages when the engine
starts.

The no shutoff problem is probably caused by a defective Yanmar relay. It is
black and very close to the previously mentioned solenoid.

As most of you have notice there are times when the engine kill switch
at the helm will not kill the engine and one must go below and turn
the throttle back to kill the engine. Recently i sent a crew member
down to do just that and today my engine won't turn over. You turn the
switch and it just goes click. I am in La Paz Mexico and a totally
clueless mechanic didn't have a cleu as to the problem. So I go poking
around and there is this brass looking cylinder just above the throtle
with what looks like a button on the top of it so i give it a couple
of pushes and voila the engine starts. what is this contraption.
apparantly the crew member pushed that button. is it a kill switch and
should it be used to kill the engine when the helm kill switch won'd
get the job done. I was afraid i was going to be stuck here for
awhile - not a bad place, but not in keeping with my plans. thanks

Valsat 03 GPS - antenna

My antenna for the Valsat 03 GPS is defect and can't be repaired -
told me Ponchon in France. They don't have a replacement antenna. Is
there maybe anyone around who has such an antenna left over when he
updated his electronic equipment??? Would like to buy it as a
temporary solution untill I buy a new equipment and redo the wooden
panel, because of different dimensions.

I put a Prosine 3000 unit in our SM and it worked wonderfully. And, if 110
volt is available when connected to shore power, the charger is much better
than the original that we had.

Jabsco Head Pumps

Hello Fellow Amelers,

The salt water flushing pump for the aft head went inop. I have had
the hardest time finding spare parts. The Jabsco manual that I have
for the Quiet Flush II heads has the "old" part numbers and none of
the sorces I tried could come up with the correct parts. It was easy
to get 12VDC parts but the 24VDC was the problem.

I finally found Depco Pump Company in Clearwater, FL. They not only
new exatctly what I needed even with the old part numbers, but had

Hey Bill and Judy,

I'm sure you already know this, but be sure your battery charger can
handle the AGM's. My new battery charger can, but the original
Nemo50 that came with the boat could not. The Dolphin that we have
now can charge the AGM's, but there is a dip switch that needs to be
changed.

in the
USVI's we upgraded to a full set (8) of the large(st) Concorde
AGM's. BIG and
HEAVY they are it was easy peasy but expensive we even got charged
to deliver
them from the marine store at one end of the dock onto the Lagoon
floating at
the other end of the dock OUCH!!!!

I try to improve the sail system of my SM2K n 428 with a
movable/furling staysail ( 18 mq). I have just seen some messages and
files about it, but I don't know if it works good, overall with deep
weaves and strong wind (6/7 B.). The problem is the mast without
backstay.
Getaff, french sailmaker who knows very well Amel, has a good ( and
expensive) solution and you can see the 2 photos in "Files"-Trinquette.
Do you have some experinces about it ?

We changed our "wet" batteries for AGM on our Santorin in 2001 in Antigua at a very good price - they were sent down from St. Maarten. No problems with them at all and they are still giving good, on load, voltage. They have had equivalent to just under 4 1/2 years full time use. If you do go for AGM you may need to change settings on your charger (depending on which make you have.)

Quick water heaters, Magnesium anodes

Hello Paul,
I have just realised that you are writing about a Quick water heater
and thus the same as mine. If you put in my subject as above in this
sites search facility you should see the earlier stuff. You will find
some pics in the Bali Hai changes photo album and more info in old
messages 1126-1130 and 1764. I think I did another posting which I
cannot find which said that after changing the anode the hot water was
a bit like carbonated water until the new anode presumably expired
after a couple of months.
It is hard to see from my pics but I am pretty sure that the anode
fits or screws into a fitting next to the hot water take off pipe. If
like me you want to make sure of reconnecting correctly take some pics
to improve your chances before you disassemble things!

I have not opened the heater since but hope that it is not so badly
scaled up as I have not been taking on mains water and that watermaker
product is lime scale free...hope springs eternal in the mind of a

change of magnesium anode on warm water maker

Dear all

On my SM227 (Year 1998 delivery) I have a 45liter ATI Nautic boiler.
When I recently cleaned the boiler, I have seen that the magnesium
anode has gone totaly and has never been replaced! Now, I ordered a
replacement anode, but I am not sure how to fix it. It seems like the
anode is fitted on the heating element. Can I just use a cupper wire to
fix it on the heating element? Does it need to be fitted with a space
of a few millimeters between the anode and the heating element or can
it also be fitted directly on the heating element?

All kind of advise would be appreciated.
