Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Sea Chest Specifications

Hi Gary,
That sounds like something I would do.  Oops!  Damn!!!
Like Alexandre, if I leave the top off of my sea chest and open the valve, water overflows the chest.

It sounds like Alex has the proper part identified.

Hope you can get one to PR soon.  With all sea cocks closed I think you'll be fine, but I'd be a bit nervous as you are.

Good morning Gary,

Sorry to read about your problem.

On mine (SM2K #289) it is likely NOT above the water line, because when I open the seacock the water fills up and would overflow if I did’t close the valve then put the top, but my vessel is very loaded and older (2000)… so may be different for yours being a more recent hull.

I purchase 2 spare strainers from Fisherie Supply:
Vetus 1320 Full Strainer DEN SET0187
http://www.fisheriessupply.com/vetus-denouden-den-set0187-set0187

When I look at the 1320 Series Intake Water Strainers, it looks like what we have:
http://www.fisheriessupply.com/vetus-denouden-1320-series-intake-water-strainers

I think and hope that “Replacement Lid with O-Ring for 1320 Series Raw Water Strainer” be the one you need, but I don’t know for sure and what do you have to loose.
Even if it doesn’t looks the same as what I have I would guess it fit (since the basket fits)
http://www.fisheriessupply.com/vetus-denouden-replacement-lid-with-o-ring-for-1320-series-raw-water-strainer-ftr13201

Please keep us posted, and I seriously believe you should have the sea cock closed.
I would hate someone making a wave and your boat start to fill up with water… not sure the insurance would agree to cover either…

Please keep us posted.

Hello All:
May
I offer my congratulations to BIll & Judy Rouse as well
upon their completing their circumnavigation and their
extensive and accurate contributions to this forum.  Those
contributions enhance the value of every Amel owners boat,
in my opinion.
Now for my stupid move
confession and questions about the Super Maramu sea
chest.

Yesterday afternoon while hurrying to
complete preparations to leave our boat for 7 weeks, I was,
as usual, flushing all the systems with fresh water.  I had
closed the seacock, used one of the toilet sea water fill
buttons to lower the water level in the sea chest a bit,
opened the sea chest, placed the lid in a bucket along with
the lightly fouled strainer.  I took those items to the
finger pier to clean them.  While cleaning these items, I
stupidly knocked the sea chest lid into the water at the
slip.  I can attest that it does NOT float.  Now I am
stuck, have to leave to catch a plane and have jeopardized
my boat.  Dumb, Dumb, DUMB.
I carefully monitored the water level in
the sea chest for about 30 minutes and don't see that it
is rising above the level of the engine supply line and I
have no alternative but to leave, and pray, all the while
having visions of my boat sinking in her slip.
Questions that occurred to me while
enduring my agonizing 14 hour trip home.  1.  Is
the top of the sea chest above waterline level?  I suppose
it depends on how the boat is loaded.  I could have tested
this by opening the sea cock a little to see fi the water
level rose but in the heat of the moment I didn't do
that.2.  I believe the sea chest is an Amel modified
Vetus unit.  Anybody have any idea if Amel can supply a new
lid or if a new lid is available from Vetus?  I will
contact Amel on Monday morning La Rochelle time to see if
they can overnight a lid to Puerto Rico.
I have tried to find a diver to retrieve
the lid but it was Saturday afternoon, two hours before
dark.  Hoping to get somebody today (Sunday), but in the
meantime I turn to you, my fellow forum members for any
additional ideas.
Note to
self, don't do stupid things.

Gary,
For now why not have the caretaker knock in a wooden plug either on the outside of the hull or inside the sea chest and have him check the water level daily.

I can't remember where I read the article, but it cautioned against using "hose bib pressure" to flush the seawater circuit.  The general thrust was if you connect the dock hose directly to a connection on the seachest, you will pressurize the seawater circuit, which can lead to filling the waterlift muffler and having it back up into the engine or generator.

I have a spare lid to the seachest with a quick-connect for a hose and have been using that to flush the entire seawater circuit.  So far it hasn't resulted in a problem, but the article I read has concerned me a great deal.

Hi Alexandre,

Yes that is the hose. The one on a reel.

Dear Eric,

Ok glad to know!

By the hose that comes with the boat, do you mean the one at the foot of the mizzen mast?
If yes, then not surprised it doesn’t deliver enough water.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Alexandre,You would be surprised
how much water the genset and engine use. I only slow down
the flow of water with a valve at the end of the hose
closest to the sea chest when I am flushing the
toilets.I have been doing this
for a few years without any hose problems. I use a regular
garden hose as the hose that comes with the boat does not
allow enough water flow for the genset.Fair

Definitely something I
want to do as I believe this will tremendously increase the
life of the engine, genset and other equipments.
I might be too cautious, but would too much
pressure put too much stress on the hoses?
On my ski boat, I had a valve and could adjust
the water flow (the reason was I wanted to increase
temperature so that the thermostat open and the block is
washed)…

My preliminary
thoughts (to avoid too much water pressure from the dock)
are:
spare strainer lid with water hose
connector (likely Gardena) connected to a hose, itself
connected to the bottom of a bucket (also with gardena
connection).
From the dock, water hose with
valve (to adjust the water flow) filling the bucket.
This way, I think this is a more “as
needed” water flow.

Hi
Alexandre,I connect the
hose
directly to the shore water.I run the
genset,
engine, anchor wash, air
conditioning and then the
toilets.I have a
valve on the
hose near the end so I can shut
off the water between
operations.I can’t
say how long
I leave the water run, I just
run as I feel is
appropriate.You will find
that the
water pressure from the dock causes
the water to go past the
toilet pumps and
fill the bowls. In the last few years I
have
not seen a problem with this.Fair

Gary,

I didn’t know
seacock could
have a slight leakage, so yes
I totally understand your
concern.

Anyway, I just
added 3 pictures of the lid on:
http://nikimat.com/vetus_1320_raw_water_filter_strainer.html

I will also email them to
you
directly.

Andrew, I love
the idea of
having a hose attachment for fresh water.
On my ski boat (Correct Craft Ski Nautique),
I
did that (to rinse the engine with fresh
water).
How do you control the water flow?
Do you have
like a bucket above the hose
that you fill up, how long do
you let it
run, etc.
Or do you only rinse
the other systems (anchor wash, air
conditioning, toilets,
etc.)

Thanks Alexandre, Mark and Andrew for your
replies.
 Each was very
helpful.  As to
why I am concerned? This
is
such a critical
system
and a leak could have such dire
consequences, even with the sea-cock closed
slight leakage
past the valve
will
eventually overflow the top of the
sea-chest
(as most have noted).
 I feel very uncomfortable
not having the
lid in place.
I
have located
a diver and I am
trying to find
a picture of the lid to email to him so he
knows what he's looking for/feeling for
in
the murky
water, yet
having scanned every
photo on this site and
all,
2,400 pictures I
have
taken of my boat and its systems, I
can't find a single picture of the
sea-chest lid or even
of the
seachest/thru-hull.  Boy, it just doesn't
get
any photo respect.
Could
someone take a pic of
the
sea-chest lid and
one of
the sea-chest so that the diver
will
know what he is looking for and then my
caretaker will
know where to put it.
 Please post here or
just email the

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: SM Sea Chest Specifications

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Sea Chest Specifications    Thanks for your reply Eric,

Definitely something I
want to do as I believe this will tremendously increase the
life of the engine, genset and other equipments.
I might be too cautious, but would too much
pressure put too much stress on the hoses?
On my ski boat, I had a valve and could adjust
the water flow (the reason was I wanted to increase
temperature so that the thermostat open and the block is
washed)…

My preliminary
thoughts (to avoid too much water pressure from the dock)
are:
spare strainer lid with water hose
connector (likely Gardena) connected to a hose, itself
connected to the bottom of a bucket (also with gardena
connection).
From the dock, water hose with
valve (to adjust the water flow) filling the bucket.
This way, I think this is a more “as
needed” water flow.

Hi
Alexandre,I connect the
hose
directly to the shore water.I run the
genset,
engine, anchor wash, air
conditioning and then the
toilets.I have a
valve on the
hose near the end so I can shut
off the water between
operations.I can’t
say how long
I leave the water run, I just
run as I feel is
appropriate.You will find
that the
water pressure from the dock causes
the water to go past the
toilet pumps and
fill the bowls. In the last few years I
have
not seen a problem with this.Fair

Sea Chest Specifications    Good afternoon
Gary,

I didn’t know
seacock could
have a slight leakage, so yes
I totally understand your
concern.

Anyway, I just
added 3 pictures of the lid on:
http://nikimat.com/vetus_1320_raw_water_filter_strainer.html

I will also email them to
you
directly.

Andrew, I love
the idea of
having a hose attachment for fresh water.
On my ski boat (Correct Craft Ski Nautique),
I
did that (to rinse the engine with fresh
water).
How do you control the water flow?
Do you have
like a bucket above the hose
that you fill up, how long do
you let it
run, etc.
Or do you only rinse
the other systems (anchor wash, air
conditioning, toilets,
etc.)

Sincerely,
Alexandre

Thanks Alexandre, Mark and Andrew for your
replies.
 Each was very
helpful.  As to
why I am concerned? This
is
such a critical
system
and a leak could have such dire
consequences, even with the sea-cock closed
slight leakage
past the valve
will
eventually overflow the top of the
sea-chest
(as most have noted).
 I feel very uncomfortable
not having the
lid in place.
I
have located
a diver and I am
trying to find
a picture of the lid to email to him so he
knows what he's looking for/feeling for
in
the murky
water, yet
having scanned every
photo on this site and
all,
2,400 pictures I
have
taken of my boat and its systems, I
can't find a single picture of the
sea-chest lid or even
of the
seachest/thru-hull.  Boy, it just doesn't
get
any photo respect.
Could
someone take a pic of
the
sea-chest lid and
one of
the sea-chest so that the diver
will
know what he is looking for and then my
caretaker will
know where to put it.
 Please post here or
just email the
photos to me at garysilver at
mac dot com.
Thanks again for
the replies,
the
information, and photos.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: SM Sea Chest Specifications

Alexandre,

You would be surprised how much water the genset and engine use. I only slow down the flow of water with a valve at the end of the hose closest to the sea chest when I am flushing the toilets.

I have been doing this for a few years without any hose problems. I use a regular garden hose as the hose that comes with the boat does not allow enough water flow for the genset.

Thanks for your reply Eric,

Definitely something I want to do as I believe this will tremendously increase the life of the engine, genset and other equipments.
I might be too cautious, but would too much pressure put too much stress on the hoses?
On my ski boat, I had a valve and could adjust the water flow (the reason was I wanted to increase temperature so that the thermostat open and the block is washed)…

My preliminary thoughts (to avoid too much water pressure from the dock) are:
spare strainer lid with water hose connector (likely Gardena) connected to a hose, itself connected to the bottom of a bucket (also with gardena connection).
From the dock, water hose with valve (to adjust the water flow) filling the bucket.
This way, I think this is a more “as needed” water flow.

Hi
Alexandre,I connect the hose
directly to the shore water.I run the genset,
engine, anchor wash, air conditioning and then the
toilets.I have a valve on the
hose near the end so I can shut off the water between
operations.I can’t say how long
I leave the water run, I just run as I feel is
appropriate.You will find that the
water pressure from the dock causes the water to go past the
toilet pumps and fill the bowls. In the last few years I
have not seen a problem with this.Fair

Sea Chest Specifications    Good afternoon Gary,

I didn’t know seacock could
have a slight leakage, so yes I totally understand your
concern.

Anyway, I just
added 3 pictures of the lid on:
http://nikimat.com/vetus_1320_raw_water_filter_strainer.html

I will also email them to you
directly.

Andrew, I love
the idea of having a hose attachment for fresh water.
On my ski boat (Correct Craft Ski Nautique), I
did that (to rinse the engine with fresh water).
How do you control the water flow? Do you have
like a bucket above the hose that you fill up, how long do
you let it run, etc.
Or do you only rinse
the other systems (anchor wash, air conditioning, toilets,
etc.)

Sincerely,
Alexandre

Thanks Alexandre, Mark and Andrew for your
replies.
Each was very helpful.  As to
why I am concerned? This is
such a critical
system and a leak could have such dire
consequences, even with the sea-cock closed
slight leakage
past the valve will
eventually overflow the top of the
sea-chest
(as most have noted).  I feel very uncomfortable
not having the lid in place.
I
have located a diver and I am
trying to find
a picture of the lid to email to him so he
knows what he's looking for/feeling for in
the murky
water, yet having scanned every
photo on this site and all,
2,400 pictures I
have taken of my boat and its systems, I
can't find a single picture of the
sea-chest lid or even
of the
seachest/thru-hull.  Boy, it just doesn't get
any photo respect.
Could
someone take a pic of the
sea-chest lid and
one of the sea-chest so that the diver
will
know what he is looking for and then my caretaker will
know where to put it.  Please post here or
just email the
photos to me at garysilver at
mac dot com.
Thanks again for the replies,
the
information, and photos.

I copied this idea from a previous post of Eric's - works very well

Hi Alexandre,

I connect the hose directly to the shore water.

I run the genset, engine, anchor wash, air conditioning and then the toilets.

I have a valve on the hose near the end so I can shut off the water between operations.

I can’t say how long I leave the water run, I just run as I feel is appropriate.

You will find that the water pressure from the dock causes the water to go past the toilet pumps and fill the bowls. In the last few years I have not seen a problem with this.

Good afternoon Gary,

I didn’t know seacock could have a slight leakage, so yes I totally understand your concern.

Anyway, I just added 3 pictures of the lid on:
http://nikimat.com/vetus_1320_raw_water_filter_strainer.html

I will also email them to you directly.

Andrew, I love the idea of having a hose attachment for fresh water.
On my ski boat (Correct Craft Ski Nautique), I did that (to rinse the engine with fresh water).
How do you control the water flow? Do you have like a bucket above the hose that you fill up, how long do you let it run, etc.
Or do you only rinse the other systems (anchor wash, air conditioning, toilets, etc.)

Sincerely, Alexandre

Thanks Alexandre, Mark and Andrew for your replies.
Each was very helpful.  As to why I am concerned? This is
such a critical system and a leak could have such dire
consequences, even with the sea-cock closed slight leakage
past the valve will eventually overflow the top of the
sea-chest (as most have noted).  I feel very uncomfortable
not having the lid in place.
I have located a diver and I am
trying to find a picture of the lid to email to him so he
knows what he's looking for/feeling for in the murky
water, yet having scanned every photo on this site and all,
2,400 pictures I have taken of my boat and its systems, I
can't find a single picture of the sea-chest lid or even
of the seachest/thru-hull.  Boy, it just doesn't get
any photo respect.
Could someone take a pic of the
sea-chest lid and one of the sea-chest so that the diver
will know what he is looking for and then my caretaker will
know where to put it.  Please post here or just email the
photos to me at garysilver at mac dot com.
Thanks again for the replies, the
information, and photos.
Sincerely, Gary Silver

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: SM Sea Chest Specifications

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Thanks for your reply Eric,

Definitely something I want to do as I believe this will tremendously increase the life of the engine, genset and other equipments.
I might be too cautious, but would too much pressure put too much stress on the hoses?
On my ski boat, I had a valve and could adjust the water flow (the reason was I wanted to increase temperature so that the thermostat open and the block is washed)…

My preliminary thoughts (to avoid too much water pressure from the dock) are:
spare strainer lid with water hose connector (likely Gardena) connected to a hose, itself connected to the bottom of a bucket (also with gardena connection).
From the dock, water hose with valve (to adjust the water flow) filling the bucket.
This way, I think this is a more “as needed” water flow.

Hi
Alexandre,I connect the hose
directly to the shore water.I run the genset,
engine, anchor wash, air conditioning and then the
toilets.I have a valve on the
hose near the end so I can shut off the water between
operations.I can’t say how long
I leave the water run, I just run as I feel is
appropriate.You will find that the
water pressure from the dock causes the water to go past the
toilet pumps and fill the bowls. In the last few years I
have not seen a problem with this.Fair

Sea Chest Specifications    Good afternoon Gary,

I didn’t know seacock could
have a slight leakage, so yes I totally understand your
concern.

Anyway, I just
added 3 pictures of the lid on:
http://nikimat.com/vetus_1320_raw_water_filter_strainer.html

I will also email them to you
directly.

Andrew, I love
the idea of having a hose attachment for fresh water.
On my ski boat (Correct Craft Ski Nautique), I
did that (to rinse the engine with fresh water).
How do you control the water flow? Do you have
like a bucket above the hose that you fill up, how long do
you let it run, etc.
Or do you only rinse
the other systems (anchor wash, air conditioning, toilets,
etc.)

Sincerely,
Alexandre

Thanks Alexandre, Mark and Andrew for your
replies.
Each was very helpful.  As to
why I am concerned? This is
such a critical
system and a leak could have such dire
consequences, even with the sea-cock closed
slight leakage
past the valve will
eventually overflow the top of the
sea-chest
(as most have noted).  I feel very uncomfortable
not having the lid in place.
I
have located a diver and I am
trying to find
a picture of the lid to email to him so he
knows what he's looking for/feeling for in
the murky
water, yet having scanned every
photo on this site and all,
2,400 pictures I
have taken of my boat and its systems, I
can't find a single picture of the
sea-chest lid or even
of the
seachest/thru-hull.  Boy, it just doesn't get
any photo respect.
Could
someone take a pic of the
sea-chest lid and
one of the sea-chest so that the diver
will
know what he is looking for and then my caretaker will
know where to put it.  Please post here or
just email the
photos to me at garysilver at
mac dot com.
Thanks again for the replies,
the
information, and photos.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: SM Sea Chest Specifications

Hi Alexandre,

I connect the hose directly to the shore water.

I run the genset, engine, anchor wash, air conditioning and then the toilets.

I have a valve on the hose near the end so I can shut off the water between operations.

I can’t say how long I leave the water run, I just run as I feel is appropriate.

You will find that the water pressure from the dock causes the water to go past the toilet pumps and fill the bowls. In the last few years I have not seen a problem with this.

Hi James:

Thanks for attempting the picture, however I don't see it posted in the photos section and if you attached it to you email, Yahoo deletes those, I think.  At any rate, I didn't receive it.  could you email it to me at garysilver at mac dot com  (Note, email addresses in the normal format with ampersand and dot are truncated by Yahoo, hence the full language text of my email address.

Thanks, I will anxiously await your email.  PS what boat were you looking at?

Hello,
I bet you're about to get inundated with rather dull photos of sea chests!
BUT just incase, here is one from a recent visit (we've very nearly just
bought a SM2k). It's just the whole thing I'm afraid, I don't have one of
only the lid.

I hope it helps and I feel for you!

Cheers,
James.

Thanks Alexandre, Mark and Andrew for your replies. Each was very
helpful. As to why I am concerned? This is such a critical system and a
leak could have such dire consequences, even with the sea-cock closed
slight leakage past the valve will eventually overflow the top of the
sea-chest (as most have noted). I feel very uncomfortable not having the
lid in place.

I have located a diver and I am trying to find a picture of the lid to
email to him so he knows what he's looking for/feeling for in the murky
water, yet having scanned every photo on this site and all, 2,400 pictures
I have taken of my boat and its systems, I can't find a single picture of
the sea-chest lid or even of the seachest/thru-hull. Boy, it just doesn't
get any photo respect.

Could someone take a pic of the sea-chest lid and one of the sea-chest so
that the diver will know what he is looking for and then my caretaker will
know where to put it. Please post here or just email the photos to me at
garysilver at mac dot com.

Thanks again for the replies, the information, and photos.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Sea Chest Specifications

Andrew & Kate Lamb

Hi Gary

If the seacock is closed and you left the boat in that state then surely there is no problem for now or am I missing something?

I bought part number FTR13201 - Vetus Cover & O-ring for Raw Water Filter FTR1320 – from the vetus shop and confirm that this fits our sea chest. I bought this to adapt it to have a hose attachment for the same job of rinsing though the system with fresh water. It is however missing the handy addition on top that Amel has added to make it easier to undo, but otherwise fits perfectly.

Hello All:

May I offer my congratulations to BIll & Judy Rouse as well upon their completing their circumnavigation and their extensive and accurate contributions to this forum.  Those contributions enhance the value of every Amel owners boat, in my opinion.

Now for my stupid move confession and questions about the Super Maramu sea chest.

Yesterday afternoon while hurrying to complete preparations to leave our boat for 7 weeks, I was, as usual, flushing all the systems with fresh water.  I had closed the seacock, used one of the toilet sea water fill buttons to lower the water level in the sea chest a bit, opened the sea chest, placed the lid in a bucket along with the lightly fouled strainer.  I took those items to the finger pier to clean them.  While cleaning these items, I stupidly knocked the sea chest lid into the water at the slip.  I can attest that it does NOT float.  Now I am stuck, have to leave to catch a plane and have jeopardized my boat.  Dumb, Dumb, DUMB.

I carefully monitored the water level in the sea chest for about 30 minutes and don't see that it is rising above the level of the engine supply line and I have no alternative but to leave, and pray, all the while having visions of my boat sinking in her slip.

Questions that occurred to me while enduring my agonizing 14 hour trip home.

1.  Is the top of the sea chest above waterline level?  I suppose it depends on how the boat is loaded.  I could have tested this by opening the sea cock a little to see fi the water level rose but in the heat of the moment I didn't do that.

2.  I believe the sea chest is an Amel modified Vetus unit.  Anybody have any idea if Amel can supply a new lid or if a new lid is available from Vetus?  I will contact Amel on Monday morning La Rochelle time to see if they can overnight a lid to Puerto Rico.

I have tried to find a diver to retrieve the lid but it was Saturday afternoon, two hours before dark.  Hoping to get somebody today (Sunday), but in the meantime I turn to you, my fellow forum members for any additional ideas.

Note to self, don't do stupid things.

Hi Gary,

On Cream Puff when the cap is off the strainer and the valve is open, water overflows the strainer. The top of the strainer is below the waterline. We tend to keep our diesel and water full. Not sure how much of a difference this would make and if it would be enough to raise the strainer above the waterline if the tanks were lighter.

We have ordered a replacement filter for the strainer. The strainer is Vetus seawater filter type 1320. Here is our contact for Vetus parts in the USA.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Sea Chest Specifications

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Sincerely, Alexandre

SM Sea Chest Specifications

amelliahona <no_reply@...>

Sincerely,

Gary Silver    s/v Liahona    SM #335

We crossed the Atlantic from the Canary Islands, dodging hurricane ALEX, and arrived in Martinique Friday about noon. It was an amazing sight...2 SM's crossed the finish line, under sail, and one after the other...we were the lead SM. Of the 20 boats in the rally, 4 were Amels and Amels were 3 of the first 4 boats finishing! BTW, a 55 crossed just before the BEBE and VIVA, the 2 Super Maramus. LIBERTAD, the fourth Amel in the rally which is a 33 year old Maramu will finish today, Monday. Dennis and Virginia Johns (LIBERTAD) stopped in the Verdes for fuel and had to wait 2.5 days for outbound clearances from the local officials.

The only thing that broke was the plastic base to the "not-so-quiet" Jabsco Quiet Flush toilet in the aft cabin. I think the simultaneous SE and NW 3 meter swells had something to do with this...and NO, it was not me on the throne when it happened. I cannot explain the crossing swell, but BEBE and her autopilot kept us on course. We ran 2 freezers and 1 fridge on the passage. I ran the generator with a 100 amp charger at 2100 and 0300 for about 1-1.5 hours each day. The 405 watt solar array took care of the rest of the power. Before the passage I lowered each sail and cut back the end of the 3 halyards (2 of which are original halyards) about 60-80cm. This included the part of the halyard that rests on the sheave at the top of the mast. The discarded line appeared to have very little abrasion, but did look a little distorted...safe rather than sorry. Judy and I have always been the only two aboard on any passage...this is the first time we have had a third crew member...wow, what a difference...I am not sure that I would ever cross an ocean with a total of two anymore.

I had one other problem that was caused by me and entirely my fault. I had a complete rigging inspection done by a good rigger in Malta. He told me that there was some dissimilar metal corrosion on the foil where the ballooner clip (the one that clicks) touches the foil. He said that he recommended some tape on the clip to insulate it from the foil. That damn tape kept the clip from staying hooked on the hooker and the 3 or 4 days that we could have used the twins, were not to be. BTW, I did drop the fore swivel and checked the clip and hooker attachment before we sailed. It worked at the dock, but there was no load on the hooker. If someone had mentioned this too me for advice, my advice would have been to NOT change what the Captain has done...I should have asked myself.

I wonder how those goose-neck barnacles attach to a boat sailing by at 6-8kts????

Cross an ocean and your respect and love for Amel increases amazingly.

Best,

Bill & Judy

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Maramu Survey

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Eric,

You have received lots of good advice.

One more important piece of advice is to let this Group know the hull number, current name, and the location. With this information, you may get a worthwhile report from somebody familiar with the boat.

AND, possibly there is an Amel owner nearby who will inspect the boat with you. In most cases, an Amel owner will be much more valuable than a surveyor not familiar with Amels. I know of several recent pre-purchase inspections which the prospective buyers were accompanied by a current Amel owner...each of these that saved the buyers lots of $$$$'s.

Good luck, and listen to Joel Potter...he knows...period!

Best,

Bill

I am new to the forum.  I will be going to see/survey/sea trial a Maramu in 2 days.  I'm about 90% sure I will be an Amel owner by the end of February.  But I'm prepared to walk if it is not what I want.  I hired the surveyor (recommended by local charter company) myself without owner input.  I have seen/crawled around a maramu before.  Boat, from owner's descriptions and from pictures (neither of them EVER lies, right?  :-)), is in good shape, was repowered with Yanmar, has extensive cruising kit (love the British term).  The bottom inspection will be performed after I leave.  Engine oil analysis will also be performed by an outside source. I have a couple questions:

1.  Even though the boat will be hauled and bottom inspected, would it be of any use for me to tote along my mask and snorkel and take an underwater peek myself while I'm there?  Not sure if I'd be abl e to learn anything from that, or not.

2.  Any deal-breaking issues I should pay particular attention to?  from what I have read, Maramu's are like tanks.  This boat is 33 years old and I know there will be significant wear and tear.  Fortunately, it has been used by the owner and not just sat.  I am not worried about cosmetic issues so much.  I'm sure the surveyor will point out things.  I just want to know if there is something that could be missed that could be a real problem down the road.

Thanks
