Hello
does anyone have any information whether and how it is possible to open the safe without a key and without battery? The Castle has different rake and now also the batteries are empty. By the previous owner, I have unfortunately no key. Thanks Elja Sy Balu SM 222

[Amel Yacht Owners] Double loss of Bow Thruster propeller...
Alexandre Uster von Baar
Good morning and Happy Easter,
The wind was 16 kt, I proceed out of the tight slip, I reverse 10 meter then I heard I lost the bow thruster propeller (higher pitch). I dove to confirm the prop was gone. No problem, I have spares… Strange enough the plastic hub was still resting on the (tufnol) shaft. Here are pictures at: http://nikimat.com/bow_thruster_lost_propeller.html Out of my 5 bow thruster propeller: The 3 whites had the hubs stuck… One black had 8 holes so 1 useable left (lesson to learn) First bad news, the plastic hub was too large to fit on the black prop… I spent 3 hours sanding by hand the prop to make it fit. Dove to put spare propeller, it felt wobbly. After 4 burst of 3 second each I lost the bow thruster propeller again… I found both propellers, the nylon bolts still on. which makes me suspect the hub failed. Closed inspection showed the normally round holes around the pin retaining the propeller were now oval. Also the nylon bolt pull right through the thread Is this from wear? Something else? Is the spare propeller with 8 hole propeller still useable? Seems a little weak. Then started the Bow Thruster removal in the water. I had to use a prop or bearing puller in order to remove the plastic hub of the white propeller… Not normal considering you should be able to change these propeller in the water or I am mistaking? Somehow these propellers are made of Aluminum… while the other 3 in composite. Is this common? Next bad news: the removed hub is too thick for the tulfnol shaft. The pin will not fit/slide in. More bad news, it is also too thick for my spare tulfnol shaft. Not to mention the spare tufnol shaft does not the same dimension as the one I have. Any opinion on the cause I lost the propeller other than the wear on the hub? Any opinion on the 8 bolt propeller shape? Any opinion on the Aluminum propeller? And being so difficult to remove. How about the tufnol arm? Anyone replaced it? Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Private Slip, Marina Puerto Bahia, Samana, Dominican Republic

Guess we'll miss each other again. I'll be in W Carib for 1-2 years, then to the S Pac for a fee years. Happy sailing Kent

I finally had the time to documental my bow thruster failure: loss of propeller (twice).

Interesting coincidence as I do have 3 Aluminum propellers on the boat… I was curious to know if they could be copies… Also to confirm what Bill just wrote: I had to use bearing puller to remove the hub. pictures on: http://nikimat.com/bow_thruster_lost_propeller.html They are also heavier and I suspect would create additional wear on the tufnol arm. Please Bill, do not stop commenting! Hopefully my misfortune will help preventing mistakes. Date: Friday, March 25, 2016, 8:07 AM I was not going to comment for fear that I would piss somebody off. OK, I changed my mind. Regarding an aluminum copy of an Amel bow thruster propeller, why? I really want to understand. Aluminum and saltwater? I can imagine corrosion (aluminum oxide) building between the hub and prop causing it to get stuck and not fit a new hub. I can imagine blades bending and biting too much water. Don't you think Henri Amel considered aluminum? You know I have helped a number of owners with a pre-purchase inspection. If I saw an aluminum propeller on an Amel, all sorts of "red flags" would pop up to me. I would tell the prospective owner/buyer that probably the current owner has no respect for Amel. And, simply why? Especially since the original propeller is available from Amel. So, if I pissed anyone off, I apologize...hopefully I was also able to deliver a "message" to others. Amel boats, their systems, and components are well conceived and well built. Wanna-bee nautical engineers who want to out-smart Captain Amel will certainly fail the majority of the time. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Bow thruster propellers & 70 MM key for the rudder shaft nut
Richard03801 <richard03801@...>
It will be interesting to see if the 70 mm works well or if in tightening it you split the much weaker bushing. I'd give that move and a SS bow thruster lots of extra thought before I changer the proven systems. Vladamir, If you do not have a transformer as Kent described, and if you have the original Dolphin battery charger, and if you wire the shore power connection correctly for 220VAC 60htz, your original Dolphin battery charger will work fine. You will need 220VAC 60htz service and an American 220VAC connector...AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY wire it correctly. Several years ago I posted photos in the photo section of how to wire the connector. I was not going to comment for fear that I would piss somebody off. Bill

SM Bow thruster propellers & 70 MM key for the rudder shaft nut
jgermain@...
Hello Gang, 1. A member here has found BT propellers made of ALU. Same attachment as original but for the material... you keep the safety of the plastic bolts in the event of contact with unknown substance. 2. I have a SS specialist make me a 70 MM key to tighten the packing nut on the rudder shaft. If interested in either component, post to my email address and I will try to get a group buy going. Cheers,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Boat battery charging using 220 VAC 60 Hz.
VLADIMIR SONSEV
I have Dolphin charger. My next stop is San Juan, Puerto Rico. Most likely AC is 60 Hz in Puerto Rico. I greatly appreciate your help. You provided complete instructions and very fast. Save cruising to evrybody. Vladimir

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Boat battery charging using 220 VAC 60 Hz.
Hi Vladimir. On my SM243, there are two shore power cables. The smaller diameter one is for 220V 50A shore power. The larger dia one is for 120V 30A shore power. When using 220 in USA, you will need a 220V 50A plug. It has connections for 4 wires. You will connect the brown and blue wires on shore power cord to red and black terminals in the plug. The yellow/green wire is connected to the ground terminal. The white terminal is not used. Most chargers will work on either 50 or 60Hz shore power, but check your manual or look it up on line to make sure. When using 120V 30A shore power, there is a 110->220VAC Transformer in the engine room. On Kristy, it is on the shelf above and forward of the generator. On Kristy there is a 110VAC circuit breaker on a box on the forward engine room bulkhead. Also on that box is a plug and two receptacles. To use 110V shore power, the plug has to be inserted in the 110VAC receptacle. On Kristy it is labeled (in French) something like "transformateur". The one for 220VAC shore power is labeled "sur le quai" or similar. Do NOT use your Washer/Dryer, Dishwasher, or Microwave when on 60Hz shore power! Even if you have a DC->AC inverter, when on shore power the 60Hz is passed through the inverter. Hope that helps. Kent SM243 Kristy

I want to maintain battary charge on my boat using power hookups on my marina. I have a portable transformer and I can increase voltage from 110 to 220 VAC, but it still going to be 60 Hz. Do you know if the battery charger will work at 220 VAC 60 Hz? Did somebody tried this? Vladimir

Good evening Vladimir,

May be I did not read the question right (sorry has been a long day), but if you have the original Dolphin battery charger, they will charge your batteries regardless if it is 50 or 60 hertz At the dock, you will ask for a 50 amp 125/250 volt power connection (which has 4 wire) you will then convert to your 3 going to your boat (I will have to look for which wires goes where) I am sure many will tell you which cable goes to which one. So you do not need a portable transformer. Another option is to use the 2nd thicker shore power (mine is not connected) then use the boat transformer, etc. but this is really complicating your life and you only get 1/2 the amps… Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Private Slip, Marina Puerto Bahia, Samana, Dominican Republic --------------------------------------------
