Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Toilet base forward head
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Eric, Since your hull number is near mine and I did this job on the aft toilet a few months ago, I can tell you a couple things. The part is available, and it comes with all of the parts, nuts, washers, bolts, etc. that you need to do the job. The base bolts screw into a stainless steel plate which is epoxied under the fiberglass floor. I believe that you might find at least one of the bolts difficult to remove. If I remember correctly, there are three bolts holding the base that you have to the floor. The easiest thing to do might be to use a dremmel to cut off the plastic tabs on the base that the bolts go through, then remove the toilet. Use plenty of penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. Using a socket wrench move the bolts forward and backward until they ease and can be unscrewed. Assemble the toilet and macerator pump on the new base before installing the toilet back on the floor...this will be the easiest way to install that macerator pump and align its O ring. Mark "Cream Puff" had a problem and broke a bolt...had to drill and retap. Bill Rouse

Terrible news from the Puddle Jump...
greatketch@...
I just got this note from the organizers of the Pacific Puddle Jump. I can only wish Bruce and his family and crew the best...
We're sorry to inform you that one of our fleet was lost on a reef in the Tuamotus Tuesday night. Bill KinneyAccording to captain Bruce Moroney, at 8 pm the Alaska-based Amel 53 Morning Dove was motoring from Apataki Atoll to Rangiroa, when the boat struck something beneath the surface, which turned out to be a portion of reef. It was a dark, moonless night, with no wind and light seas. Bruce says he was monitoring his chart plotter and radar at the time. As the boat listed over and was pushed farther inshore by surf, the crew activated their EPIRB and put out a mayday via SSB and VHF. They had spent time previously preparing for such an emergency, including assigning each crew specific tasks. Wisely, they stayed with the boat while awaiting rescue, rather than deploying their liferaft. At 2 a.m. the four crew on board were hoisted to safety within a French Navy helicopter, and were taken to Rangiroa. They flew to Papeete yesterday and are now on their way home. Hi, I am up the coast in Port Douglas. My business is Wavelength Reef Cruises and we have a shop in the marina here where Popeye is also parked (but we live in a house!). You are very welcome to have a look. Popeye is pretty much all refitted except waiting for painting.

Hi John. We are in Cairns for a while and wondered if we could catch up with you on Popeye sometime. We would be keen to see what you have done with your Amel. [amelyachtowners] Hi Eric, you have asked before and no I've never been to Columbia. I didn't name the boat. Are you familiar that during the second world war and rationing in the UK the government came up with a cartoon of a sailor who got super strong from eating spinach. His girlfriend was Olive Oyl and his daughter Sweet Pea. Our dinghy is Sweet Pea. Quite an innocent explanation for a boat name.

Vetus coupling repair
Hello all you DIY mechanics. We are planning to replace the bushings on the Type 6 Vetus coupling and note the installation diagram calls for a spanner wrench torque of 130lb. at 20”. What have others done to address this specified torque? Success with adjustable spanner wrench? Thanks, Mike Aletes SM#240, Rock Hall, MD

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow thruster
amelforme
Just so owners of earlier/pre-Millennium model Super Maramu’s are not confused by Walters otherwise correct and helpful posting on the bow thruster’s containment/drainage system on his late model SM 53, the earlier boats did not have this provision. Leakage from the thruster would make its way to the base of the main mast compression assembly at the foot of the watertight bulkhead separating the saloon from the forecabin. Use a sponge to transfer the sea water into the shower drain pan and service the thruster soon if leaks are present.

Dear group, referring to a topic some time ago about the bow thruster - if it is leaking, how to prevent water getting into the boat ...
Kind regards,

Thanks. I have downloaded the bow thruster service information and reviewed it. This boat has the straight shaft instead of the C-drive. The prop is currently fixed. I will do the continuity check you suggested. I want to better understand the wiring in the boat since I understand that it is somewhat unique and I am sure that given the vintage that there will be wiring requiring replacement. Can you tell me if there is a lightning grounding system on an Amel? Thanks for the method used to grease the discharge seacocks. James

Re: Haul-out facilities in Grenada
amelliahona <no_reply@...>
Hi Ben:
We have hauled out at Spice Island Marine yard 4 times. Always had a good experience. Our first time there was the second year the yard was open and one year before hurricane Ivan (thank goodness) the Cat 4 hurricane that destroyed all the boats in the yard and 80% of the structures on Grenada. It pushed the jacks stands through the hulls of the boats and layer them all down. There were major improvements in the yard after that with better anchors, better positioning in a chevron pattern, and better drainage etc. I can highly recommend the yard to you. There are laundry facilities on sight, and the Budget Marine store is in the yard as well as canvas and sail shops etc. As an aside, we stayed in the Cool Runnings apartments while hauling and re-commissioning. It is about a 2 block walk from the yard. Basic but priced right with AC, kitchenette, and comfortable beds. Clean and secure with guard. Small breakfast/lunch restaurant on site. Between the stainless steel and the back of the lamp you should find a thin lever that needs to be moved in the opposite direction. From there, you can lift the lamp. Turn it upside down and unscrew the part holding the bulb.
Hope this help.

Lalizas navigation lights
Can anyone tell me how to take the port and starboard rail mounted nav lights apart ? Its not immediately obvious to me. Can't find anything in their website...I think the lense clips together with the mounting base, but how to release it ? Expert opinion graciously recieved ! Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

For your information, Amel yards are now using 80/90 gear oil for all C Drives. Some of us will not deviate from the 20/40 oil, but I will use what Amel is using on my next haulout. Bill Rouse
