Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Generator failure (Field Breaker) won’t start

Mark Erdos

Hi Alexandre,

I need to better understand,

Does the generator start, run for a little and then shut down? If so, how long does it run?

Is the “Fault Breaker (check Generator)” that is popping to cause the shutdown?

Is this happening with no load?

With best regards,

Mark

Good afternoon Mark,
I also think the big wave and the generator failure are not connected (unless a module or something inside it got loose/disconnected).
But I think if it was something “engine” related like the electric pump, sensor, etc. the “Fault Breaker (Check Engine)” switch would pop up, in my case it is the “Field Breaker (check generator)” which makes me think about an issue on the “generator” side.
But I will be investigating.
Thanks again, sincerely, Alexandre

Alexandre,
A couple of thoughts: the fact the
generator runs, or briefly runs would indicate nothing
mechanical is wrong. If it were me, I would operate on the
assumption the big wave and the generator failure were not
connected. Is it possible that you have a clogged fuel line
and is the electric fuel pump working correctly? Is the
exhaust clear of any blockage? Is the airflow into the
engine obstructed? You can loosen a fuel line at the
injector to check for fuel flow. You should see fuel
leaking out when the engine is cranked. Also, could it be a
faulty sensor (heat or oil)? But I think either of these
would shut the generator off but they would pop the fault
thingamajig.

Generator failure (Field Breaker) won’t
start Good morning Bill,

During the trip I tried to
start with the 30 Amp 230 Volt OFF, since I was pretty tired
I just tried again same result… shuts down right away…

I am afraid, like you wrote that it is
internal and will be looking for an Onan authorized dealer
(well good I am in Puerto Rico and not in Dominican Republic
anymore!)
As always thanks very much for
your help.
I will keep the forum updates on
what failed, possibly the cause, etc.

OK. I understand the model you
have. I think it is better than mine because it
is
simpler.
Try this: Turn
OFF the 30 Amp 230VAC breaker on
the side.
Try to start. Does it start and run OK? If it
does, the short is external of the generator
and your guess
is as good as mine, but I
would start with the shore
power/generator
solenoid box.
If you have the same results
as before, the
short is internal...if so,
find an authorized Onan
dealer/mechanic.

Good
afternoon Bill,

Regarding the “Field
Breaker” (check generator) I put a
link to
the pictures of my genset:

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

For limited bandwidth, here is the pictures of
my front
panel

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105_1.jpg

I also have the DC Circuit Breakers on top of
my Emergency
Stop and the 30 Amp 230 VAC
switch on the left side as well.

As of now, when I start the generator, the
“Field
Breaker” (check generator) will
pop and shut down right
away the genset.

I also suspect an electrical
short somewhere… just not
sure where to
start…

Thanks in advance, sincerely,
Alexandre

Alex,

I am not sure what you mean by
"field

breaker."
Could you explain that further. My Onan
has

an
Emergency Stop switch (breaker), a DC Breaker, and a

230VAC 30 Amp breaker. This 30
Amp breaker is on the
left

side of the generator, the
other two are on the main

generator control panel. Mine will not start
with either
the

Emergency or the DC set to OFF. It will start
with those
two

ON and the 30 Amp OFF.

Also, am I correct that you generator will

start and run, but shuts down
when something...possibly
what

you refer to as field breaker,
is turned ON? That sounds
to

me a an electrical short.

I know we have different
models, but they

aren't
that different.

Let me
know.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Toilet base forward head

Mark Erdos

Alexandre,

When repairing the forward head, I broke a bolt. I successfully drilled a hole inside the bolt and tried using a reverse thread bolt extractor but it broke off inside the bolt. This left no other option than to use a different hole in the base of the toilet. I thought I would need to install some type of bolt anchor seems only the top side of this area is accessible. We are in the Bahamas so my access to parts is very limited. I planned to drill a hole and resin in a nut. I hit the steel plate under the fiberglass when drilling a pilot hole and realized then how Amel constructed this. I drilled a new hole for my new bolt and using a tap and die threaded the steel plate for the new nut.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

Mark

Hello Mark,

But as Bill said mine and your model are older and use a different base…
Nice repaid on your side!
How did you see/access the steel plate under the fiberglass?
I still would like to remove the broken bolt and put a new one!!!

Eric,
 Alexandre is correct. Jabsco changed
the design of the part and did not change the part number. I
searched high and low for an old style base and am convinced
none are available.
I had the same issue with the
cracking bases. I removed the old base and used fiberglass
mat and resin to repair it. So far so good. Both bases
cracked. The older repair is now going on two years (aft).
The forward head was recently repaired.
To remove the base you will need to
back out the four bolts holding it. There are no nuts on the
underside. Under the fiberglass floor is a stainless steel
plate and the bolts go into threaded holes into this plate.
Be careful not to force the bolts!!!!
They will break (ask me how I know this). Use some lube and
be VERY patient.
 Hope this helps.

base forward head    Good morning Eric,

I had the same problem (base
cracked).
I was able to unscrew the nuts
off the bolts (the bolt seems to me part of the fiberglass
bottom and unfortunately I broke one)
The
main problem is that I was not able to find a replacement
base… The exact part number is now a different base which
will not fit…
So I glue the old one
together and apply it with 4200.
Hope
someone get a better answer…

The base of the toilet of my forward head is
cracked.
I would like to
replace it but it
seems to be through bolted
and
I do not see
any access.
Does anyone know how to access the bolts or are
they
set in some material to
hold them in
place?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Generator failure (Field Breaker) won’t start

Alexandre Uster von Baar

During the trip I tried to
start with the 30 Amp 230 Volt OFF, since I was pretty tired
I just tried again same result… shuts down right away…

I am afraid, like you wrote that it is
internal and will be looking for an Onan authorized dealer
(well good I am in Puerto Rico and not in Dominican Republic
anymore!)
As always thanks very much for
your help.
I will keep the forum updates on
what failed, possibly the cause, etc.

OK. I understand the model you
have. I think it is better than mine because it
is
simpler.
Try this: Turn
OFF the 30 Amp 230VAC breaker on
the side.
Try to start. Does it start and run OK? If it
does, the short is external of the generator
and your guess
is as good as mine, but I
would start with the shore
power/generator
solenoid box.
If you have the same results
as before, the
short is internal...if so,
find an authorized Onan
dealer/mechanic.

Good
afternoon Bill,

Regarding the “Field
Breaker” (check generator) I put a
link to
the pictures of my genset:

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

For limited bandwidth, here is the pictures of
my front
panel

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105_1.jpg

I also have the DC Circuit Breakers on top of
my Emergency
Stop and the 30 Amp 230 VAC
switch on the left side as well.

As of now, when I start the generator, the
“Field
Breaker” (check generator) will
pop and shut down right
away the genset.

I also suspect an electrical
short somewhere… just not
sure where to
start…

Thanks in advance, sincerely,
Alexandre

Alex,

I am not sure what you mean by
"field

breaker."
Could you explain that further. My Onan
has

an
Emergency Stop switch (breaker), a DC Breaker, and a

230VAC 30 Amp breaker. This 30
Amp breaker is on the
left

side of the generator, the
other two are on the main

generator control panel. Mine will not start
with either
the

Emergency or the DC set to OFF. It will start
with those
two

ON and the 30 Amp OFF.

Also, am I correct that you generator will

start and run, but shuts down
when something...possibly
what

you refer to as field breaker,
is turned ON? That sounds
to

me a an electrical short.

I know we have different
models, but they

aren't
that different.

Let me
know.

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

Unless I am mistaking there is no code to see
(unlike
the

more recent genset).

Prior that I only used the genset lasts week
for 18
minutes

all was ok. Before that was a month before for
1.4 hour
to

exercise all the systems and all was ok.

Thanks in advance for your
help…

Sincerely,
Alexandre

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Generator failure (Field Breaker) won’t start

Mark Erdos

Alexandre,

A couple of thoughts: the fact the generator runs, or briefly runs would indicate nothing mechanical is wrong. If it were me, I would operate on the assumption the big wave and the generator failure were not connected. Is it possible that you have a clogged fuel line and is the electric fuel pump working correctly? Is the exhaust clear of any blockage? Is the airflow into the engine obstructed? You can loosen a fuel line at the  injector to check for fuel flow. You should see fuel leaking out when the engine is cranked. Also, could it be a faulty sensor (heat or oil)? But I think either of these would shut the generator off but they would pop the fault thingamajig.

With best regards,

Mark

Good morning Bill,

During the trip I tried to start with the 30 Amp 230 Volt OFF, since I was pretty tired I just tried again same result… shuts down right away…
I am afraid, like you wrote that it is internal and will be looking for an Onan authorized dealer (well good I am in Puerto Rico and not in Dominican Republic anymore!)
As always thanks very much for your help.
I will keep the forum updates on what failed, possibly the cause, etc.

OK. I understand the model you
have. I think it is better than mine because it is
simpler.
Try this: Turn OFF the 30 Amp 230VAC breaker on
the side. Try to start. Does it start and run OK? If it
does, the short is external of the generator and your guess
is as good as mine, but I would start with the shore
power/generator solenoid box.
If you have the same results as before, the
short is internal...if so, find an authorized Onan
dealer/mechanic.

Good afternoon Bill,

Regarding the “Field Breaker” (check generator) I put a
link to the pictures of my genset:

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

For limited bandwidth, here is the pictures of my front
panel

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105_1.jpg

I also have the DC Circuit Breakers on top of my Emergency
Stop and the 30 Amp 230 VAC switch on the left side as well.

As of now, when I start the generator, the “Field
Breaker” (check generator) will pop and shut down right
away the genset.

I also suspect an electrical short somewhere… just not
sure where to start…

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Alex,

I am not sure what you mean by "field

breaker." Could you explain that further. My Onan
has

an Emergency Stop switch (breaker), a DC Breaker, and a

230VAC 30 Amp breaker. This 30 Amp breaker is on the
left

side of the generator, the other two are on the main

generator control panel. Mine will not start with either
the

Emergency or the DC set to OFF. It will start with those
two

ON and the 30 Amp OFF.

Also, am I correct that you generator will

start and run, but shuts down when something...possibly
what

you refer to as field breaker, is turned ON? That sounds
to

me a an electrical short.

I know we have different models, but they

aren't that different.

Let me know.

Good afternoon,

The passage from Samana (Dominican Republic) to San Juan

(Puerto Rico) was rough (as the waive were in the nose,
so

lots of pounding.

As usual I started the genset to recharge the batteries,
2

or 3 minutes later was a big waive/pounding and it stopped.

The “Field breaker” pop.

I switch off all the 220 volt device, press the “Field

breaker” back, started then shut down instantly, I
tried

starting with the DC breaker off, etc. same it shuts
down

instantly.

I don’t even know where to start to find the problem.

I own the ONAN MDKAL B Specs

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

Unless I am mistaking there is no code to see (unlike
the

more recent genset).

Prior that I only used the genset lasts week for 18
minutes

all was ok. Before that was a month before for 1.4 hour
to

exercise all the systems and all was ok.

Thanks in advance for your help…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Generator failure (Field Breaker) won’t start

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Bill,

During the trip I tried to start with the 30 Amp 230 Volt OFF, since I was pretty tired I just tried again same result… shuts down right away…
I am afraid, like you wrote that it is internal and will be looking for an Onan authorized dealer (well good I am in Puerto Rico and not in Dominican Republic anymore!)
As always thanks very much for your help.
I will keep the forum updates on what failed, possibly the cause, etc.

Sincerely, Alexandre

OK. I understand the model you
have. I think it is better than mine because it is
simpler.
Try this: Turn OFF the 30 Amp 230VAC breaker on
the side. Try to start. Does it start and run OK? If it
does, the short is external of the generator and your guess
is as good as mine, but I would start with the shore
power/generator solenoid box.
If you have the same results as before, the
short is internal...if so, find an authorized Onan
dealer/mechanic.

Good afternoon Bill,

Regarding the “Field Breaker” (check generator) I put a
link to the pictures of my genset:

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

For limited bandwidth, here is the pictures of my front
panel

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105_1.jpg

I also have the DC Circuit Breakers on top of my Emergency
Stop and the 30 Amp 230 VAC switch on the left side as well.

As of now, when I start the generator, the “Field
Breaker” (check generator) will pop and shut down right
away the genset.

I also suspect an electrical short somewhere… just not
sure where to start…

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Alex,

I am not sure what you mean by "field

breaker." Could you explain that further. My Onan
has

an Emergency Stop switch (breaker), a DC Breaker, and a

230VAC 30 Amp breaker. This 30 Amp breaker is on the
left

side of the generator, the other two are on the main

generator control panel. Mine will not start with either
the

Emergency or the DC set to OFF. It will start with those
two

ON and the 30 Amp OFF.

Also, am I correct that you generator will

start and run, but shuts down when something...possibly
what

you refer to as field breaker, is turned ON? That sounds
to

me a an electrical short.

I know we have different models, but they

aren't that different.

Let me know.

Good afternoon,

The passage from Samana (Dominican Republic) to San Juan

(Puerto Rico) was rough (as the waive were in the nose,
so

lots of pounding.

As usual I started the genset to recharge the batteries,
2

or 3 minutes later was a big waive/pounding and it stopped.

The “Field breaker” pop.

I switch off all the 220 volt device, press the “Field

breaker” back, started then shut down instantly, I
tried

starting with the DC breaker off, etc. same it shuts
down

instantly.

I don’t even know where to start to find the problem.

I own the ONAN MDKAL B Specs

http://nikimat.com/onan_mdkal_b_specs_12_volt_kubota_d1105.html

Unless I am mistaking there is no code to see (unlike
the

more recent genset).

Prior that I only used the genset lasts week for 18
minutes

all was ok. Before that was a month before for 1.4 hour
to

exercise all the systems and all was ok.

Thanks in advance for your help…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Flooded onan

Bob Grey

Hi Joel, was back in the boat today, no obvious trace of any salt water in the inlet manifold, but the Anti syphon air bleed Venturi was blocked with rust. Is a welded stainless steel piece so "rust" is a concern, obviously the water siphoned back into the motor via the wet exhaust on a hard starboard tack due to the blocked air bleed. Possibly into a cylinder and dripped passed the rings over the 12 hour tack.

Will now be part of my annual maintenance schedule, to pass a wire through the Venturi hole to ensure it works as designed. The actual u piece is in a difficult position horizontal above the motor so will be re arranging the layout to make the water pipes visible and the Venturi easy to clean without pulling everything apart, will send you a pic of my changes once I finish it.

Joel, thanks for your imput,  if the anti syphon was clogged and she flooded via the exhaust / inlet valves overlap and crankcase ventilation, the piston would have been top of cycle so minimal water in the cylinder on starting, thus no hydrolock and motor damage. I'm starting to thank my Irish forbears for lucky coincidences. Now if this is correct then I need to unblock the anti syphon U. I might also move the anti syphon "U" higher in the engine room and closer to centerline of boat.

Need also to check the inlet manifold and air filter for traces of salt crystals to confirm hypothesis.

Im away from the boat for a week so will report on findings on or about the 10th.

Sorry, accidentally hit send before I finished. When this siphon happens, it usually fills up a cylinder with an open exhaust valve and 'hydro-locks' the engine. If the starter is powerful enough, it can damage Pistons, con rods. And the crankshaft. Since you have run your engine that did not happen. Perhaps your engine has a positive crankcase ventilation system plumbed through the air intake system, I don't know. What a puzzle. I agree with Bill/BEBE, get a tech who knows this gen set to have a look.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Bill, when drained water was not green and level of coolant was not low. Onan not used during crossing about 10 hours heeled on starboard tack.  Agree normally water in oil would be head gasket, ran Onan for 4 hours after second oil change, oil clean and no trace of milkiness.

I estimate 1+ liters water, nothing since.

I'm scratching my head. Only thing for sure is Onan hull exhaust and cooling water ports would have been under water during crossing.

Bob,

I think that for water to be in the oil from the exhaust, it would have to be pushed past the pistons and rings. This is unlikely because if seawater enters through the exhaust system, it will usually bend or break piston connecting rods.

If your coolant level decreased at the same time, it is most certainly a blown head gasket or cracked head. Did the coolant level decrease? Can you estimate the total increase in volume of the oil including the water?

The most likely cause is a blown head gasket, or some other breach in the coolant pathway. I think that you should get an Onan mechanic on the boat. If you are still under Amel warranty contact SAV.

Duane,

The way Amel wired the Xantrx 1800 on BeBe 387 was very simple and dies not include a fancy dancy cutover switch.

They wired an extra set of outlets for the inverter, keeping it completely separate of the 230VAC shore/generator power outlets.
1 in aft berth
1 in each head
1 at the nav station
1 next to the microwave outlet

I need to add one more in the galley because using the one for the microwave for appliances is tough, plugging inside that galley cabinet.

Well, for those of us who are not yet victims of CHS-"Cracked Head Syndrome"-it seems like a good idea do clean any deposits and corrosion on the bolts and spray with a penetrating oil, hoping it will work its way down.  I have noticed in the past that bolts sprayed with Corrosion-X will free up over time, so it may be a good choice as prevention and penetration.  Dedicated penetrating oil may be even better.  Anyway it sounds like a really good idea to do it now.

John,

It will be up to Michel but I would like to see some oil placed in the cylinders,  spin the engine up to get oil pressure and be verified to be free before trying to start the engine to reduce the chance of damage from a dry start.  I think that rolling the engine over by hand  as Bill suggested is a good idea and should indicate if there is a problem.

Your right, it does not take much to remove a valve cover.

How long have you owned Popeye?

Best,

James

James,

If you are doing this before buying the boat it sounds like there is not too much you can take apart but if you have concerns about seized valve guides then just removing the rocker cover to observe is not too intrusive.

Thanks Joel.  I guess I don't have one then.... There's nothing on the transom.  My US coast Guard document lists the IMO as 173 so I've always assumed that was out  hin.

On  most Super Maramu’s the number is at the starboard aft end of the rub rail, tucked up in the upper corner of the area where the hull sides meet the transom.

If you need a HIN, you can apply to the USCG to get one. Not difficult if you can prove you own the boat.

Always have fun with your Amel

James,

If you are doing this before buying the boat it sounds like there is not too much you can take apart but if you have concerns about seized valve guides then just removing the rocker cover to observe is not too intrusive.

On my 1981 boat I have a number laminated into the engine room hull on the port side. It would be obscured if painted over.

JPG,

I read a bit about the extensive refit you did on Eleuthera,  a very deserving vessel to apply money and labour to.  I hope that she gives you many carefree years and miles.  I will have plenty to do on the boat I am planning to buy but I figure that working on the boat is a great way to get to know the systems.

Best,

James

Hello Lokiyawl,

Indeed, Eleuthera is hull 7.  The ID plate states #07… I took the liberty to add the extra 0… I guess Amel did not expect to sell more than 100 SM’s so their numbering ended at 100.

Eleuthera has been revisited from stem to stern; we are probably more up to date than the newest SM2K… :-)

I also bought my boat through Michel Charpentier - an Amel 54 I bought in 2012. Michel was/is the best broker I have ever dealt with. Highly recommended - and to confirm  he knows a LOT about Amels.

hi James,

I do not know the boat you are interested in, but I do know Michel Charpentier. I have bought an Amel Sharki from him last year. He is a good and trustworthy guy. He knows a lot about Amel in all the details, being specialised to sell used Amel boats.
I am happy with the boat I have bought from him.

Alexandre,
Stainless bolts into stainless plate tend to gawl and seize unfortunately.  It's why most turnbuckles have bronze bodies and stainless studs.  In the event that you actually remove the plate consider replacing with silicon  bronze and you won't have fight to remove the bolts in the future.  The best source I know of is Atlas Metals for the bronze plate.  If you keep the stainless plate, never seize does help prevent problems.  Best of luck.

     With best
regards,  Mark  Super Maramu

Subject: Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Toilet
base forward head    Good morning Eric,

I had the same problem (base
cracked).
I was able to unscrew the nuts
off the bolts (the bolt seems to me part of the fiberglass
bottom and unfortunately I broke one)
The
main problem is that I was not able to find a replacement
base… The exact part number is now a different base which
will not fit…
So I glue the old one
together and apply it with 4200.
Hope
someone get a better answer…

Sincerely, Alexandre

The base of the toilet of my forward head is
cracked.
I would like to
replace it but it
seems to be through bolted
and
I do not see
any access.
Does anyone know how to access the bolts or are
they
set in some material to
hold them in
place?
