Good point, Danny. The Onan that Ben has is probably the same model as BeBe.

Ben, you never mentioned any error code, so assumed there was no error code. Was there an error code? Insufficient water flow is 7 blinks. Did you have this error?

I will check out those condensers.  I just don't know how generator can shut down without throwing a breaker?

Your problem is centered around the High Pressure pump motor. I am going to guess that the pair of condensers on top of that motor are either bad or there is a short in the wiring there.

I saw the exact symptoms on another 160L SM. The guy had recently changed the condensers and wired them wrong. I assume that you have not changed anything so I assume either bad condensers or a short. Of course you could have an electric motor problem, but check out the condensers.

Hi. Kent there is a high load/ draw on the generator motor that is over powering the diesel. It's not a short if it went on long enough he'd have an over heat blown breaker. Second if the motor started is bad and the motor draws are high the heat build up in the motor will cause issues.
Without doing some detailed trouble shooting on site it's tough to determine the cause. That said I'd ck the capacitors/condensers first.

Hi Mark,
check this.

I was wrong with with Lewmar Ocean size 2 and 3 being out of production. Good news.
The catalog I´ll put into the files section shows no travellers, only genua cars, but the bodies are the same.

Re: Main sheet traveler for Super Maramu

Hi Mark,
the main sheet traveller is Lewmar Ocean. I´ll put the Spares Catalogue in the files section. To my knowledge the more substantial Lewmar Ocean series are out of production. It is possible to disassemble the sheaves. Maybe there are some spares at Amel, otherwise a good toolshop can built a new sheave out of delrin. Perhaps a current Lewmar traveller will fit to the old track.

Walter (Noa, SM2K #436)

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Kent !!!

A rather good description of why floating grounds are important, how they are different than bonding systems, and why the two should never meet can be found here:

http://www.marinesurvey.com/yacht/ElectricalSystems.htm

If you can’t find an electrician who is “Amel savvy”, find one who is used to working on boats with aluminum hulls.  They have similar systems with the DC ground totally isolated from the hull. Unfortunately, those can be as hard to find in the US as ones with Amel knowledge.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dessalator 160 causes generator to shutdown but no breakers thrown

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Kent,

I am not exactly sure of the answer, but I witnessed this exact occurrence after a SM owner wired the new capacitors on the pump motor wrong.

Here is what happened: The Onan momentarily struggled when the HP pump turned ON after the 2 minute timer, then shut down.

Possibly the computer on the Onan senses a demand that is outside of its capacity and shuts down before the breaker reaches the capacity. But, I am not sure. Computers on diesels are a wonderful thing. Be sure to than the US EPA!

Dessalator 160 causes generator to shutdown but no breakers thrown.  I can run all - 3 airs, charger, washer - simultaneity.  But when Dessalator is turned on generator shuts down.  No breakers on inside panel or on generator are thrown; generator just shuts down. I can restart immediately but as soon as Dessalator is started it shuts down again.

I tried turning all off including charger and turning Dessalator alone on but same thing.  Specifically, when I turn on unit low pressure pump starts up and pressure gauge is in green.. It runs for a few seconds until high pressure pump starts which immediately causes generator to shut down.  I never touch the high pressure control knob which is turned all the way counterclockwise so there should be no pressure.

It seems as no breakers are thrown on either generator or Dessalator, this must be water flow related.  That is, not enough flow for both generator and Dessalator .  By the way, system has new high pressure hoses and membranes and worked well during first use after new membranes filling tank with good water just last week. However it did shut down once for no apparent reason on initial use.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Main sheet traveler for Super Maramu

Mark,

I do not know. But, I would ask a local rigger. Sheaves come in various sizes and they are custom made by several people. My guess is that any rigger worth his salt will help you.

One of the sheaves of my main sheet traveler car has broken.  Does anyone know how to source a new sheave or a new traveler car?  I do not know the make and model of the traveler car on my Super Marmu redline -- Goiot, Antal,...?  It is no label on it.  Is there a recommendation of a traveler car that fits the existing track?  My main sheet traveler has been difficult to move since new.  Perhaps I need new bearings in addition to a new sheave.

Thanks.

I don't understand how a faulty motor causes the generator to shut down without throwing a breaker.  Can someone elucidate?

I would check the capacitors on the high pressure pump.

That’s my best guess- unless there is a short in the motor or wiring.

No. Only that generator shuts down

Do you know how much current the water maker is drawing just before it shuts down?

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dessalator 160 causes generator to shutdown but no breakers thrown

I could use some team help.

Thanks
