Darn Batteries-Link 10
Krassopoulos Dimitris <dkra@...>
You have to check the Link 10 equipment. This controls the charging of the
batteries you have to reset and adjust the unit accordingly to the voltage you want. There is no manual in the net for the link 10 but there is some information in the www.xantrex.com <http://www.xantrex.com/> where the is a faq section. I have the manual in paper and I could not find the original pdf file if I find it I will inform you. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Darn Batteries

Tony,
My manuals are on the boat so I will provide some thoughts from memory. Perhaps my comments will provoke someone else, with more experience in these issues, to contradict me. First, I own SM #331 which was originally equipped with Delco "sealed" lead acid batteries and a pair of Sentry battery chargers. I have tracked the wiring on the battery chargers and the alternator. There is no "master regulator" on our system. The battery chargers are wired directly to the batteries, as is the alternator. The only adjustable setting is that the Sentry chargers may be set to either "gel" or "free cell". The gel setting is a half a volt higher than the lead acid setting. Two years ago I replaced the original batteries with lead acid Trojan (non-sealed) batteries. I use the gel setting while cruising, because it charges the batteries faster and then switch back to the free cell setting when we are hooked up to city power at a marina. The 24 V alternator has a built in regulator and there is no "gel" or "free cell" setting on this. To boost the charging voltage, you would typically add an in-line diode to the field sensing wire between the battery bank and the alternator. This would drop the sensing voltage from the battery bank by half a volt and thereby boost the charging voltage by a similar amount. We have never done this and our voltages are almost identical to those you describe. That is, we do not have a 28.4 Volt deficit charging option, nor a 31 Volt desulphating option. When under passage, I check out the number of ampere hours used, twice daily. Both battery chargers will provide a little over 60 amps positive flow, when combined. If the deficit ampere hours (from the Link monitor) is say, - 80 Ah, I would set a timer and run the generator for 90 minutes. After 90 minutes of charging, if the charge rate has dropped below 20 Amperes, I shut the generator down. If I need to run the water-maker or washing machine, I will then run the smaller (30 Ampere capacity) battery charger, at the same time, to "top-up" the batteries. Otherwise, we do not even try to reach 3 to 5 amperes trickle charging from the generator. Hope this helps, Ed Steele SV DoodleBug www.sv-doodlebug.com

Darn Batteries
Ag Av8ter
Hello group,
I own SM#266. About six months ago I talked with the Amel factory and discussed my battery / charger problems. They assured me that I needed to replace my current batteries. I did that in St. Maartin, new wet cells. Same problem as before. We sailed to Guadaloupe and talked to Amel there. We were directed to Pouchon. The man at Pouchon said that our battery charger (Nemo 50) was defective. I told him to fix it, he said no, it was too old (1999) there were no parts. He sold me and installed a new Dolphin 100 amp. charger. New batteries, new charger same old problem. Problem; Charger works fine, charges batteries to 27.3 volts and then quits. I just talked to Rolls Batteries, and they said I needed to be able to charge to 28.4 to prevent "deficet charging" and to 31 volts to de- sulfate the batteries. The batteries show 100% charge (Mastervolt) and 27.3 volts and will stay like that with the charger going for as long as I leave it. As soon as the charger is off line the voltage drops to 25.6 and starts dropping until I charge the batteries again. Currently I must run the generator two to three times a day to keep up with the demand. When using the main engine and 80 amp 24 volt alternator, the same things happens, the charge stops at 27.3 volts and about 3 - 5 aamps. Question: Is there an Amel voltage regulator that gets both the charger and alternator current? Where is it? Can it be adjusted? I have talked with Denis at Dolphin and it does not seem that my charger has mulitple programs, so I can not use it to "equalize" my batteries. Any comments? Thanks in advance for your help, Tony Gray WORLD CITIZEN SM 266

Hi Pat,

That's a problem with most every reverse transom boat; there is a product called Slap Silencer which claims to reduce the noise level; it's a piece of canvas that you attach when you're in dock, and remove when you sail. I have no personal experience with it, but almost bought one for my previous boat, which was much noisier than a SM. Tom Aletes SM#240

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] STERN ANCHOR OF SUPER MARAMU 2000
john martin <symoondog@...>
Peter, i agree with Ed about the Fortress anchor. He has the large one that can be used as a primary anchor. I got only a 10 lb. one as i only use it as a stern anchor to swing the stern around in rolly anchorages. I have 3 primary anchors in the bow, but i sure don't want to set them or try to retrive them from a dinghy. Also buy or make a cavass bag to hold the anchor in, along with about 10 feet of chain. You can put the anchor together in 5 minutes. 7/16 or 1/2 inch line is all i use. we're leaving Panama next week. My wife went to a 3 week school in Antiigua, Guatemala to learn spanish. She loved it. Life should be much easier now. John "Moondog" SM 248

We have had good luck with a Fortress FX-55 on mixed rode with 10 meters of chain. The FX-55 is light enough to deploy and retrieve from a dinghy if necessary, although a tripping line is highly recommended.
